Dispensaries Open Their Doors to Recreational Marijuana
On January 1, 2018, sales of recreational cannabis began for adults in California, which will make the state the biggest legal cannabis marijuana market in the United States. California issued temporary licenses to dispensaries allowing them to sell non-medical cannabis beginning January 1st. MedMen West Hollywood is one of the many dispensaries that is currently selling recreational cannabis. Since the store opened its doors to adult users, the line has been a block long, making patients wait for up to two hours just to check-in. The dispensary has experienced such a high demand for recreational cannabis that the store hours have been extended to allow for more patients. For those users who are still medical patients, dispensaries recommend going to stores that only sell medical marijuana in order to avoid these lines for recreational cannabis.

We wanted it to be an escape, says Lily Estanislao, general manager of Lowell Farms Cafe, the first fully operational cannabis restaurant in the U.S. You're kind of going on a little trip when you're here.
Housed in a 20,000-square-foot former brewery in West Hollywood, Lowell Farms Cafe has a menu that includes edibles, joints, high-tech bongs, and vapes.
Erika Soto, an industry veteran, works as a flower host—a waitress for weed. When guests arrive, she walks them through their options, explains the effects of various strains, and advises them on proper dosage levels. Lowell is an important step combating the negative stigmas that [surround] the subject that is cannabis, Soto told Reason.
What our ultimate goal is, is to be able to pair the cannabis with the foods. Your flower host would be like a sommelier, and we want the food service to be versed in cannabis as well, says Estanislao, who tells Reason that Lowell has received more than 800 job applications in its first month of operation. Everybody wants to work here, she says.
For now, Lowell could only be located in the city of West Hollywood, which created a special permit for cannabis hospitality businesses. Estanislao and her team are making a big effort to get along with their neighbors. After the rabbi at a nearby synagogue expressed concern that her congregants would be bombarded with marijuana odor, the restaurant installed massive air filters and machines that spray a scent-neutralizing essential oil called Cannabolish.
West Hollywood has been on the forefront of just being accepting of everything that's more liberal and that's that needs to be liberated, says Soto. So West Hollywood is now known as the mecca of cannabis.
Because California requires that all cannabis products to be tracked seed-to-sale and lab-tested, Lowell Cafe isn't allowed to make its own marijuana-infused foods or drinks. Everything must be prepackaged.
And lighting up a tobacco cigarette is prohibited at Lowell, in compliance with West Hollywood law.
Lowell Cafe's license is provisional for the first year, after which the city council will decide whether to renew it. In the meantime, more cannabis hospitality shops are coming. The city has issued licenses to seven additional businesses, including one that will offer a virtual reality experience and another a day spa.
Estanislao is working hard to set the standard.
[We want to] prove to ourselves and prove to everyone else that this is something that can be done, she says. If we can just spread the love through the country, then that's for sure what we want to do.
Produced by Zach Weissmueller. Camera by Benjamin Gaskell and John Osterhoudt.

Legal weed comes to California
California will become the eighth state in the U.S. to legalize recreational marijuana in 2018. The new law however, is raising a lot of questions for the state's users -- and producers -- of the drug. CBS News correspondent Carter Evans reports from Los Angeles, where only a handful of dispensaries will be ready to hit the ground running in the new year.

How to Legally Smoke Weed in California | MERRY JANE News
Subscribe to the MERRY JANE Newsletter for the latest video releases and everything cannabis:
California has entered a whole new era and the days of cannabis prohibition are fading into the past.
As of January 1st, 2018, California became the most populous U.S. state to legalize recreational cannabis use. The Golden State is not just transitioning from a medical marijuana-only state to a fully rec-legal state, however, it is also transitioning from a largely unregulated market to a tightly controlled one. This means that there are numerous laws, rules, and regulations governing exactly when, where, and how you can use pot.
For Californians who are used to the “wild west” days of the unregulated medical marijuana market, or for tourists looking to legally purchase marijuana for the first time ever, the list of rules and regulations can be confusing. But there's no need to spend hours Googling the guidelines – MERRY JANE has prepared a concise list of do's and don'ts that will you have you sparking up on the right side of the law in no time.
Full transcript below:
As of 6am on January 1st, any adult in California is legally able to purchase weed for recreational use. While this offers stoners freedoms that haven't been seen since the 1920s, there are still many rules and regulations on how and where you can buy and smoke pot that you will need to keep in mind.
Here's a quick breakdown of what you can and can't do:
DO - Buy cannabis products at a licensed retail store. If you're 21 or older, you can walk into any licensed establishment and shop to your heart's content. Keep in mind that you are allowed to personally possess up to 28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrates at a time.
DON'T – Expect to find a retail store in your neighborhood that's open on January 1st. Many towns have opted out of allowing recreational canna-businesses in their areas, and some cities have delayed their local start date for retail sales - so you may need to take a road trip to find some legal weed.
DO – Smoke as much weed as you like in private. Proposition 64 authorizes local governments to license microbusinesses that will allow adults to purchase and cannabis onsite, but it will take time for these to become operational. In the meantime, enjoy your stash at home or at your friends' house.
DON'T – Smoke pot in public. Using cannabis in public – including sidewalks, parks, restaurants, and beaches - is still illegal throughout the state, and offenders can be fined $100. If you are smoking pot in a place where cigarette smoking is also illegal, you can be fined up to $250. If you're a tourist, remember that many hotels also prohibit smoking up.
DO – Grow your own marijuana. Adult California residents are legally allowed to grow up to 6 plants at home. Some local governments will be able to prohibit outdoor cultivation of marijuana, so check with your city government before planting some weed in your front yard. But even if your community prohibits outdoor grows, the law still gives you the right to grow your plants indoors.
DON'T – Sell pot to anyone, especially minors. (image 2) The state has mandated that all retail sales be handled through licensed stores in order to put an end to black market sales and keep weed out of the hands of minors. You can, however, gift another adult 1 ounce of flower or 8 grams of concentrate.
DO - Check your employer's drug policy. Because marijuana is still a Schedule I drug prohibited by the federal government, employers maintain the right to drug test employees and to fire anyone that tests positive for marijuana.
DON'T – Drive under the influence or smoke pot in your car. Police will be conducting sobriety tests and enforcing marijuana-impaired driving as strictly as they enforce drunk driving laws. Also, if cops find an “open container” of weed – which can mean anything from an open baggie to a loaded vape pen to an unwrapped edible – you can be fined $100.
DO - Get your criminal record expunged. If you have been previously arrested for possession or cultivation of small quantities of cannabis, you can petition the court to have this black mark removed from your records permanently.
DON'T – Smuggle or take your weed out of state. It might be tempting to mail some edibles to your cousin in Alabama or to bring a secret stash with you on your holiday trip, but these ideas are dangerous and illegal. Not only do you risk putting yourself in hot water with the law, bringing or sending pot to a state where it's illegal can alert federal authorities, possibly inspiring them to crack down on legal cannabis in California.
DO – Enjoy yourself!

Dispensary Tour - Alpine Alternative, Port City Alternative Partner For Medical Marijuana Cannabis
Our parent company, Alpine Alternative, has won numerous awards for Best Medical Marijuana Dispensary as chosen by patients! We are so lucky to carry many of the same high-quality medical-grade cannabis products at Port City Alternative, and staff delivers the same quality customer service!
Cannabis dispensaries in the United States or marijuana dispensaries are a local government regulated physical location, typically inside a retail storefront or office building, in which a person can purchase cannabis and cannabis related items for medical or recreational use. First modeled in Amsterdam in the late 1970s where they were innocently called coffee shops it would take the Americans more than a generation to successfully duplicate the idea of a retail cannabis storefront. Unlike the Dutch coffee shops, today dispensary customers are prevented from consuming cannabis on the site of a regulated dispensary in all known markets.
In a traditional Medical cannabis dispensary store a patient receives cannabis medication as allowed per the patients doctors recommendation. These dispensaries sell cannabis products that have not been approved by the FDA and are not legally registered with the federal government.
As of 2016 there are state regulated marijuana dispensaries in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Washington DC.
A cannabis dispensary differs from similar retail stores known as smoke shops, in that only state licensed cannabis dispensaries are authorized to sell cannabis.
