Riding the Thames Clipper! London Eye to Canary Wharf 22/05/15
Today you join me in the shadow of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament at the London Eye Pier for a charge down the River Thames aboard the Hurricane Clipper, one of 13 vessels used to operate the high speed Thames Clipper service from this point to North Greenwich.
The Thames Clipper service commenced operation in 1999 as a high speed, river based alternative to the Underground or Buses. The Hurricane Clipper entered service in 2001, and is capable of a top speed of 28 Knots, or 32mph, which for a boat is impressive. It is 124ft long and can carry 220 passengers.
1. First, the London Eye, completed in March 2000 as part of the Millennium celebrations. The structure is 443ft tall, making it the tallest Ferris Wheel in the world at the time of its erection in 1999, and consists of 32 capsules with a capacity of 25, doing a complete rotation of the wheel in 30 minutes.
2. Next, we pass beneath Hungerford Bridge, completed in 1864 to carry trains out of Charing Cross station. It is flanked by the two Golden Jubilee Bridges opened in 2002 to provide pedestrian access.
3. Next is Waterloo Bridge, built in 1945 to replace the original structure from 1817, which was demolished due to a fault in the design of the piers.
4. We then pass the preserved Escort vessel HQS Wellington, launched in 1934 and saw service in World War II escorting Atlantic Convoys. It was decommissioned in 1947, and converted to Head Quarters Ship (hence HQS) Wellington, being floated to her current position in 1948.
5. Liveried in striking wartime 'Dazzle' paint-scheme, HMS President, a Flower-Class anti-submarine vessel launched in 1918. The ship was only in active service until 1922 when it was permanently moored where it is now, and is one of only three British World War I vessels to survive in preservation.
6. We then pass under Blackfriars bridges, the pillars of the former 1864 bridge still visible on the left. St Paul's Cathedral then comes into view, opened in 1708 after nearly 35 years of construction to replace the original church of 604AD destroyed by the Great Fire of London. Today it is one of the most recognisable structures in the world.
7. Next we pass the London Millennium Bridge, opened in June 2000, but closed shortly afterwards due to a resonance that made the bridge sway in an unstable manner. The structure was retrofitted throughout 2001 at a cost of £5m and reopened in February 2002.
8. We then see the Tate Modern Art Gallery, and a replica of the famous Globe Theatre, the original 1599 structure where Shakespeare performed being destroyed by fire in 1613. This reconstruction was opened in 1997.
9. We then pass Southwark Bridge, followed by Cannon Street Bridge, opened in 1866 to carry trains from the nearby South Eastern Railway terminus.
10. Next, the skyscrapers of the City of London come into view, including the Walkie-Talkie, the Cheesegrater and the Gherkin. This is followed by the modern incarnation of London Bridge, the original wooden structure opening in AD50, replaced by the first stone bridge in 1176. The 1176 bridge was rebuilt in 1832, that structure being replaced by the current London Bridge of 1971.
11. Next, the Shard, Britain's tallest habitable structure at 95 floors and 1,016ft. The structure opened in 2013, and is home to offices, hotels, restaurants and an open air observation deck.
12. We then pass HMS Belfast, the last conventional warship to be retired from the Royal Navy. The vessel was launched in 1936, and lived a busy life during World War II. After assisting in the D-Day landings, the vessel spent the remainder of its days in the Far East, assisting in the Korean War before being retired in 1963. It opened to the public in 1971.
13. Next up, the Tower of London, the historic Norman fortress built to guard the Thames in 1078. Since then it has been one of the most prominent symbols of power in British history, most notably as a dungeon and place of execution for traitors, political prisoners, even Royals.
14. We then pass beneath Tower Bridge, opened in 1894 as one of the most iconic bridges and structures in the world. The bridge is an ingenious combination of a Bascule Lifting Bridge and a Suspension Bridge, at a length of 801ft and a tower height of 213ft. Until the 1991 opening of the Queen Elizabeth II bridge at Dartford, it was the last bridge to cross the Thames before the sea.
15. Now away from the congested leisure traffic of the Thames, the Clipper puts on the power to full throttle as we pass the luxury riverside apartments of Limehouse.
16. Eventually, we arrive at Canary Wharf, built since the late 1980's as one of the most prominent financial centres in the world, although in previous history it was the main dockyard for ships from across the globe carrying goods from both the British Empire and beyond. The skyscrapers of One Canada Square and the HSBC tower certainly make a difference to the Dockland Cranes of yesteryear.
Enjoy!

HMS Kent on the Thames by Dartford
HMS Kent is a Type 23 Duke class frigate of the British Royal Navy, and the twelfth ship to bear the name, although technically she is named after the dukedom rather than the county. Sponsored by Princess Alexandra, The Hon Lady Ogilvy (daughter of the late Prince George, Duke of Kent), Kent was launched on 28 May 1998 and commissioned on 8 June 2000. She was the first ship to enter Royal Navy service in the 21st Century.[2]
Kent's lineage boasts sixteen Battle Honours from the three given to the first Kent of 46 guns built in 1653, to the five awarded to the ninth and tenth Kents of World War I and World War II.

London - Canary Wharf and the shopping malls
This walk is around Canary Wharf, the new financial centre in the East end of London. The weather was dry at the start so we had a nice stroll around the place admiring the gleaming sky scrapers. But the weather turned for the worse after lunch so we had to take refuge in the shopping malls in the underground and resurfaced again when the rain stopped.

Bob Weston talks about the Wellcome Factory development in Dartford, Kent | Via Kent Online

The site of a large Victorian medicine factory is set to transform into an £80 million housing development providing 400 new homes.
The 7.6 acre land near Dartford train station, once the home of a supplier of remedies for explorers and Royal Family members, has been purchased by house builder Weston Homes for the construction of a waterside “garden village”.
The brownfield space, currently called Mill Ponds, will be converted into one to two bedroom apartments and two to three bedroom houses surrounding a local high street, a large village pond, and green spaces.
The project will begin in Summer this year and is expected to be completed in Autumn 2016.
The firm claims that, once redeveloped, the Mill Ponds and neighbouring Northern Gateway sites will “provide the south east of England with a large new urban centre, built entirely on brownfield land.”
Bob Weston, chairman and managing director of Weston Homes, said: “Our new £80 million garden village will transform surplus industrial land and bring it back to use as high quality residential housing and commercial premises.
“The Mill Pond and river setting will provide attractive water features for the adjoining homes and the leafy garden suburb inspired design will create a highly attractive place to live. It will be ideal for families and executives wanting a home within the M25 providing easy commuting into central London.”
Initially the home of the Pheonix Paper Mill built in 1852, the site was replaced with the Wellcome pharmaceuticals factory in 1889 which made cod liver oil, malt and saccharin. The factory even prepared medicine chests for famous explorers including Captain Roald Amundsen – the first man to reach the South Pole.
In its Edwardian heyday, the manufacturer extended beyond its original boundaries and eventually covered 33 acres, employed over 1,300 people and relied on raw materials transported up the River Darent by barge.
After the Second World War, newer plants were opened on other sites and the Dartford factory was shut down in 2008 by its then owners GlaxoSmithKline.
The facility has been up for regeneration since 2010 and a masterplan has now been devised for the entire facility by firm Delancey.
The acquisition of the Mill Ponds site is part of Weston Homes’ ongoing £1 billion expansion programme which is set to double the size of the company over the next 4 to 5 years.
Mr Weston added: “Stamp duty on £2 million plus homes and mansion tax concerns has slowed the central London market and focused investor and developer attention on outer London and commuter belt locations where competitive entry prices and stamp duty reductions have helped to further increase demand for new homes.
“Projects in the £300 to £700 per sqft price range is exactly where Weston Homes wishes to focus at present and we believe that this sector of the marketplace will continue to flourish and benefit from sustained demand.”
Prices have not been set but are anticipated to start from £150,000 for a 500 sqft one bedroom apartment.

Fishing for GIANT CATFISH - New UK PB!
I head off Fishing with my Dad to try and catch the Giant Catfish that lurk in a tiny pond here in the UK. The Wels catfish can grow to monster sizes in parts of Europe. The River Monsters are usually found on the famous river Ebro in Spain as well as various rivers in Italy and other countries in Europe. But in the UK, they are found in various still water ponds and lakes. Pond Fishing is really popular in the UK, so I head out with Dad for a day fishing. We show you the rigs and gear that we use to catch catfish. They can be caught on both bait and lures. Learning how to catch catfish is not complicated. Dad even uses some Bushcraft to put a rig together! Hope you guys enjoy the vid and thanks for joining us on the adventure! - Mike

Customer Project: Crossrail Station Abbey Wood, London, United Kingdom
With the Crossrail railway line in Great Britain, one of the biggest infrastructure projects of Europe is in progress. The construction costs for the 118‑kilometre railway line amount to about €21 billion. It runs from Reading in Berkshire in the West to Shenfield in Essex in the East crossing through the centre of London.
A branch line runs under the Thames to Woolwich and ends at the recently completed Abbey Wood Station. Its extraordinary timber roof construction has the shape of a huge manta ray which seems to hover above the station.
Two Dlubal customers have been involved in the project. WIEHAG Holding AG planned, produced and assembled the timber structure, the engineers of enartec – engineering + architecture performed the structural analysis for the roof structure in RFEM.
