HEINEKEN BrewingGood Cheer at The Wheatsheaf in Woodplumpton
National Poetry Slam champion Solomon O.B is using the power of verse to shine a light on the important role Britain’s pubs play in building community spirit. London-born Solomon O.B has travelled around the country listening to heart-warming, real-life stories of publicans and locals about the crucial role of pubs in creating a sense of togetherness in their communities.
Following his tour, Solomon then used these real life community stories as the inspiration for a new powerful piece of original poetry, which he has called BrewingGood Cheer. To view Solomon’s journey please visit:
Uncovering stories of community spirit alive in pubs across the UK
As part of his journey of poetic inspiration, Solmon O.B met staff and regulars of The Crown and Horses, in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire: a pub that was forced to close in 2015 due to torrential floods. It has only managed to re-open its doors through the sheer hard work of the local community that banded together and returned the pub to its former glory.
Another location visited by Solomon on his journey to discover daily acts of kindness in pubs was The Wheatsheaf in Woodplumpton, Lancashire. Following the closure of the village’s post office, locals had to travel miles to the next town to post letters deposit takings and draw out pensions. To help, the pub literally brought the post office to them - by opening a postal service facility in the pub!
Solomon O.B, who describes himself as a hybrid of rapper and poet, also embarked on a trip to Liverpool’s Elephant pub to learn about the establishment giving mothers in the community a place to get together every morning and socialise over a cup of tea and biscuits.
Launching #BrewingGood Cheer
The release today of Solomon’s poem is being used to officially mark the launch of HEINEKEN’s #BrewingGood Cheer: a nationwide campaign to show the role pubs play in nurturing community spirit and bringing people together. At the heart of #BrewingGood Cheer, will be a series of festive pub lunches for locals who don’t have many friends or family around to spend Christmas with.
Also joining the campaign will be community charities including Royal Voluntary Service, Salford Start and Golden Oldies that will co-host the lunches to help reach people most in need of some company.
The campaign will be taking place in the run up to Christmas: a period traditionally associated with selflessness, good will toward all, kindness and when families and communities traditionally come together.
Claire Matthews from HEINEKEN said: “Pubs are the original social networks, so they’re the perfect place to bring people together and help foster a tight-knit community spirit.
“We hope that #BrewingGood Cheer will shine a light on the wonderful examples of community togetherness and the role pubs play in this - from the everyday to the extraordinary.
“And by showing that even a small gesture, such as chat over a drink and food, can make a big difference if you’re feeling lonely, we hope to encourage people to think about reaching out to someone they know in need of some compmay.
As well as the #BrewingGood Cheer lunches, HEINEKEN will be donating £50,000 to 50 charity and community projects that support people who are lonely or isolated across the country.
The #BrewingGood Cheer lunches will be taking place in pubs from Wednesday 7th December in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Herefordshire and Tadcaster. To find out more about #BrewingGood Cheer, please visit neighbourly.com/brewinggood.
Places to see in ( Garstang - UK )
Places to see in ( Garstang - UK )
Garstang is an old market town and civil parish within the Wyre borough of Lancashire, England. It is 10 miles north of the city of Preston and the same distance south of Lancaster. In 2011, the parish had a total resident population of 4,268; the larger Garstang Built-up Area, which includes the adjoining settlements of Bonds and Cabus, had population of 6,779. Garstang is famous for being the world's first ever Fairtrade Town.
St. John Plessington was born at Dimples Hall, which is just outside the town. Garstang was once served by Garstang and Catterall railway station which closed in 1969, and Garstang Town railway station which closed to passengers in 1930. The town is overlooked by the ruined remains of Greenhalgh Castle, built in 1490 by Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby.
The town celebrates an arts festival and an agricultural show (which has been continued for 200 years) every year in August.
In April 2000 Garstang declared itself the world's first Fairtrade Town, influencing many other towns, cities and counties around the United Kingdom to work towards the same goal. The Fairtrade Town status was renewed by the Fairtrade Foundation on 13 August 2003.
The local newspaper, the Garstang Courier, is available on tape free of charge to blind and partially sighted people from Galloway's Society for the Blind. Following success in winning the Small Country Town category in the 2002 Britain in Bloom Awards, Garstang won the Small Town category in the 2005, 2006 and 2010
Local primary schools are Garstang Community Primary School, with about 245 pupils, St Thomas' Church of England School and SS Mary and Michael Catholic School. The local secondary school is Garstang Community Academy which does not offer sixth form courses; pupils travel to Lancaster, Preston or Blackpool and further for A level courses.
The town has seven public houses: The Farmers Arms, the Crown, the Eagle and Child, the King's Arms, the Royal Oak, the Wheatsheaf, Th'Owd Tithe Barn, with the Bellflower (formerly the Flag) in Nateby and Crofters Tavern in Cabus. It has three restaurants: Pipers, Ken Ma and the Great Season, the latter two being Chinese restaurants. There is also a golf club and Country Hotel and the Crofter's Hotel, on the main A6 road.
Lying on the River Wyre, River Calder and the Lancaster Canal, Garstang is situated close to the A6 road, the M6 motorway, and the West Coast Main Line, between Lancaster and Preston. It lies on the eastern edge of the Fylde, and the Forest of Bowland is not far to the east. Garstang and the nearby villages of Bonds, Bowgreave, Catterall and Western Claughton-On-Brock form an almost continuous built-up area, bypassed by the A6 road in 1928. Other nearby villages not bypassed by the A6 road include: Brock, Bilsborrow, Cabus and Churchtown form another, much larger, continuous built-up area which includes Garstang in the centre.
( Garstang - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Garstang . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Garstang - UK

Miners Leaving Pendlebury Colliery (1901)
A black miner makes an intriguing addition to an already captivating film of coal workers up from their pit.
Showman Albert Sedgwick, conspicuously raffish in homburg and moustache, bestrides and controls this film. Sedgwick has 'planted' the poster board advertising the show in which it's to be screened - as well as, probably, the Afro-Caribbean man whose presence in Edwardian Lancashire so surprises us. And he is choreographing, right before our eyes, the procession of colliers for the camera.
