British PM Theresa May Visits the White House
In a joint press conference, President Trump reassured May that he's now a firm supporter of NATO.
White House 'disappointed' with U.K. decision to allow limited access to 5G network
The White House responds to the United Kingdom's decision to allow Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to play a limited role in its next generation 5G mobile networks, defying pressure from the U.S. CNBC's Eamon Javers reports.
Britain will allow Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to play a limited role in its next generation 5G mobile networks.
The U.K. government said that Huawei will be restricted from being involved in “sensitive functions” in a network of features labeled as “core.”
There is also a limit in place on how much equipment networks can buy from one “high risk vendor” for a particular part of the infrastructure known as the Radio Access Network (RAN). This is essentially the part of the network that hooks up your devices with the actual 5G signal. So Huawei can participate in the RAN, but no more than 35% of a single vendor’s equipment in this part of the network can come from Huawei.
“The cap at 35% ensures the U.K. will not become nationally dependent on a high risk vendor while retaining competition in the market and allowing operators to continue to use two Radio Access Network (RAN) vendors,” the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre said in its review of the country’s telecommunications supply chain on Tuesday.
The move could strain relations between the U.K. and U.S. following a campaign by Washington to have the Chinese firm blocked from as many markets as possible. The U.S. claims Huawei poses a national security risk because its equipment could be used by Beijing for espionage. Politicians have also raised concerns about Huawei’s links to the Chinese Communist Party. Huawei has repeatedly denied these claims and any link to China’s government.
Huawei: Cap is a ‘significant limitation’
Huawei, which has already been blocked in other key markets including Australia and Japan, gave a measured response to the decision.
“Huawei is reassured by the U.K. government’s confirmation that we can continue working with our customers to keep the 5G roll-out on track. This evidence-based decision will result in a more advanced, more secure and more cost-effective telecoms infrastructure that is fit for the future. It gives the U.K. access to world-leading technology and ensures a competitive market,” Victor Zhang, vice president at Huawei, said in a statement.
Andy Purdy, the U.S. chief security officer at Huawei, said the U.K.’s decision was not necessarily a big win for the company, as the U.K. has always taken a measured approach since it began operating in the country over 15 years ago.
“Frankly, we don’t really see this as a win per se, this is a very small step and a process that began 15 years ago with the U.K., they have taken a very measured, a very somber approach to risk mitigation so they can get the benefits of technology,” Purdy told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday.
Purdy did say that the 35% cap is a “very significant limitation.”
US pressure
In the lead up to the decision, U.S. politicians pressured the U.K. to outright ban Huawei. Over the weekend, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Britain had a “momentous decision ahead on 5G” replying to British Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat, who said: “The truth is that only nations able to protect their data will be sovereign.”
And there is also a risk that the intelligence sharing relationship between the U.S. and Britain is under threat. Earlier this month, a U.S. lawmaker has introduced a bill that would stop the United States from sharing intelligence with countries that use Huawei equipment for their 5G networks. That bill is not yet law.
5G technology is more than just faster download speeds on mobile devices. It promises to be able to underpin other new technologies like driverless cars for example. That’s why it’s viewed as being so crucial — because it could be the backbone for critical infrastructure in the future.
Some lawmakers in the Conservative government’s own party sent warnings to U.K. Prime Minster Boris Johnson.
“The danger is that you allow China leverage into your system, into your critical national infrastructure if you allow Huawei in,” Conservative lawmaker Bob Seely, told BBC Radio 4′s “Today” show on Tuesday.

10 Crazy Security Features in The White House
Top 10 facts about President Donald Trump's home security and protection. The most heavily guard house in America.
Subscribe to TheHub
Security is an important part of the President’s daily life. Whether it be protection by the Secret Service or the latest technology, the POTUS has to constantly be monitored. Whereas most office buildings in the United States have some form of security, the White House makes them all look amateur. After all, the building is housing the most important government official in the country. The security features of the United States have definitely evolved over the years. What started out as a simple fence has grown to an all out technological masterpiece. And that’s just the parts we know about. It has long been rumored that a high tech bunker exists under the white house, and in 2010 it may have been confirmed. It has also been said that the White House uses a complicated system of lasers and radars. That is in addition to using classic techniques like bullet proof glass and steel fences. The technology used to protect the president is second to none. It uses the defence budget of the United States that is overwhelmingly the biggest in the world. The Secret Service is a 24/7 operation whose purpose is to protect the leader inside the White House. As they adapt to drones and changing threats, the facility must change with the times. As the Presidency is the most important position in the government, the most important building is also the White House. That means the security features must be the greatest technology available. So, here are the Crazy Security Features in The White House.

SECRETS Inside The White House The Public DOESN'T Know
There are many secret rooms and things we don’t know about in pretty much every government building there ever was, but there are a great deal of things we didn’t know about one of the most important buildings in the United States. We certainly didn’t know these things before now but that’s why these are Hidden Secrets Inside The White House The Public Doesn’t Know About.

#4 - The Pres And First Lady Had Code Words For Personal Time
Although they don’t appear to really be enjoying each other’s company in this image, the current President and First Lady do like to spend some alone time together. Because they are who they are, Potus and Flotus, they are surrounded by security detail every step they take. Getting any sort of alone time seems like it would be really hard to come by seeing that they are always being watched like a hawk. So, to combat these issues, the President and his wife go about their business and the Secret Service issues a special code. In these engagements, the President is referred to as “Renegade” while the First Lady is given the codename “Renaissance.” The words “quality time” is then termed “discussing the Bosnian problem.” Although we can’t see the problem here. The full-on version for Potus and Flotus to steal away and act like teenagers is “Renegade can’t be disturbed now. He and Renaissance are discussing the Bosnian problem.” Gross.
#3 - The White House Has Literally Been A Zoo
No, we aren’t making jokes about the people here, we are actually talking about animals and man, have there been a lot living at the White House throughout the course of each presidency. We aren’t going to mention any of the normal house pets like dogs or cats, because there would simply be too many of them. Back in the day, Thomas Jefferson has a mockingbird that flew around the house, Theodore Roosevelt’s daughter, Emily, had a pet snake. John Quincy Adams had an alligator that lived in the bathroom while the two alligators Herbert Hoover’s sons had roamed around the yard. Out of all of the Presidents, however, the one who had the strangest and most exotic pets was Calvin Coolidge and his wife Grace. Here she can be seen holding a raccoon but they have had a bear cub, a bobcat, two lions, a wallaby, and a pygmy hippo as pets at the White House.
#2 - The Oldest Painting Was Almost Destroyed
Pictured here is the oldest painting in the entire building, George Washington’s portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The portrait hangs in the East Room, the place where the President holds meetings with the most prominent people in the world, but it wouldn’t have made it here today if not for Dolley Madison. In the War of 1812, British troops came and torched the White House, the former first lady, clearly thinking quickly, cut out the painting from the frame before she rolled it up and took it with her for safekeeping. It has since been reframed and it looks as good as new, thanks to her. The only sad part about her daring rescue is that the original painting that was there was only a copy itself. The copier had even misspelled the words “United States” so that it read “United Sates.”
#1 - There Is A Shopping Center Under The White House
This is certainly not something we knew but it really is a hidden secret the public isn’t supposed to know about. Although you see the President and his staff shopping while abroad, you don’t ever see him or his family dash into a mall, stateside, to shop. The reason for that is simply they don’t go because they don’t have to, and we aren’t just talking about the current Potus and Flotus. Although they could have each had their own shopping mall BEFORE Trump became President, they don’t have to waste time now, because they live on top of one. Apparently, underneath the White House is a mall of sorts. Not only does it have some of the best clothing in the world, some of which you can see on the racks in this picture, but there are also services such as a florist, a carpenter, and even a dentist.
