IRELAND'S OLDEST HOUSE? WHITE HOUSE WHITEABBEY

I was up at White House Lagoon off the M5 at Whiteabbey to do a wee bird watching video but I immediately became totally distracted when I came across what it reputed to be the oldest building/house in Ireland! I ama totally gobsmacked!I wasn't expecting this!
The White House has nestled on the Northern Shore of Belfast Lough for over 400 years and has now been restored into a beautiful visitor centre and multi-purpose space.
The White House tells both the story of the Williamite and Jacobite Wars from a European perspective and the story of this historic building’s past right up to the present day. The building itself dates back to the 1500s but the most famous story associated with it is in 1690 when William of Orange landed at Carrickfergus on the 14th June. William’s army landed at the ancient quay near the White House and William rode from Carrickfergus where he met with General Schomberg and other people of note.After falling into disrepair in the 1800s the building was later used as a gospel hall until 1997. At this point it was purchased on behalf of Abbey Historical Society by Ulster Garden Villages and in 2000, the White House Preservation Trust was formed to preserve and restore the building. The Trust worked tirelessly to attract funding and was successful in obtaining grant-aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Biffa Award, Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Ulster Garden Villages. As a result The White House has been transformed into a beautiful and informative visitor centre.
200 years before Australia was even discovered, and around the same time pioneers were discovering America, it is interesting to note how armies were already landing at The White House in preparation for a historical battle.

The White House is the oldest building in Newtownabbey; it also predates McHugh's, the oldest building in Belfast, by about 300 years. It is exceptionally important in the history of European civilisation as it was a landing point for the ships of King William's army in 1690. Also notable about the building is the story of Colonel Blood, a devious law breaker who once attempted to steal the crown jewels. Had he been successful, which he was not, the crown jewels certainly could have been discovered in this hiding place of his across the water.

It was first built in 1569 and during the intervening years has heard many a different story told through its walls. First mentioned on a map in 1569 of Cragfergus Baie (now Belfast Lough) the building was at a stage an impressive multi-roomed, turreted small castle. Now however the place stands in semi-ruin. That was at least until the Abbey Historical Society formed The White House Preservation Trust which is now acting as a guardian over the building, hoping to restore it to former glory. Currently the building is undergoing restoration work hoping to transform what was at a stage simply a pile of sad old pile of crumbling bricks into a new community heritage resource centre.

Between March 2006 and September 2007 the White House has been awarded several grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund to transform these ruins. It has also gained local status from its featuring on different television programmes including Village Restoration on BBC2, in which it was placed second in the Northern Ireland heat, and also on the BBC Road Show.

Local councillor, and chairman of the Trust, Billy Webb has been involved with the project since its conception in 1996. He stated his desire was to ensure this building is not lost to future generations. He went on to state he hopes he can inform people the building is why the area is called Whitehouse, not this is where the White House used to be. In a desire to reunite and link historical events with real places the new centre will provide a place where history is retold through a different generation. There is also a hope that that the centre may act as a means of conflict resolution. The army landed here; hopefully all the repercussions of their actions would mean all the trouble could end here too. NIE has said the theft of cables by thieves who cut down electricity poles in Newtownabbey on Tuesday was the seventh such incident this year.

A number of electricity poles were cut down at Antrim Road.

This is the High school that I personally attended for 5 years. Starting in September 2003 until around July 2008. It has now been demolished due to many acts of vandalism and arson. So admire the school for what it was.

Information about NCHS:
It was originally built around the 1950's as Hopefield Secondary School. Not much info to go on.
Some parts of the school were built later as it expanded.
It merged with Rathcoole High School in 1994 to form Newtownabbey Community High School.
The school went without an official Principle for 2.5 of the 5 years I was a student there.
In 2015 it merged with Monkstown Community School to form Abbey Community College, not all of the Teachers made the transfer, some took the schools closure as the right time to retire.

A walk around the perimeter of Newtownabbey Community High which closed in August 2015 due to declining numbers. The School then merged with another local high school. There does not seem to be any future plans for the building.

Stephen Boyd, Messala in Ben-Hur, Blue Plaque Belfast

I'm up at the Whitehouse on the Belfast Shore Road. I've stopped just before the turn off for Doagh on the left. A Blue Plaque has recently been placed on Victorian Moygara House to remember the life of Hollywood film star Stephen Boyd who was born close to this spot.
Stephen Boyd – real name William Millar – was born in a house, long demolished, at the corner of the Doagh Road, Whitehouse on July 4, 1931. Boyd was the youngest of nine siblings born to Irish/Canadian parents, James Alexander Millar and his wife Martha Boyd. At a very early age, William, or Billy as he was known, moved with the family to live in Glengormley. Boyd attended the local Public Elementary School and Ballyclare High School, but at the age of fourteen Boyd quit school to take up other jobs to help support his family. He eventually joined the Ulster Group Theater where he learned the behind the scenes tasks of the theater. He became well known in Belfast for his contributions as a gravel-voiced policeman on the Ulster Radio program The McCooeys, the story of a Belfast family written by Joseph Tomelty. Boyd eventually worked his way up to character parts and then starring roles. By nineteen he had toured Canada with summer stock companies. In 1950 he made a coast to coast tour of America with the Clare Tree Major Company, 1956 performing A Streetcar Named Desire in the lead role as Stanley Kowalski. Boyd would later recall this as the best performance I ever gave in my life.
Boyd caught his first break as a doorman at the Odeon Theatre. The Leicester Square Cinema across the street recruited him to usher attendees during the British Academy Awards in the early 1950s. During the awards ceremony he was noticed by actor Sir Michael Redgrave, who used his connections to introduce Boyd to the director of the Windsor Repertory Group. This was just the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame.
The first role that got him noticed was as an Irish spy in the movie The Man Who Never Was, released in 1956.
Hell in Korea followed. This featured future stars Michael Caine and Robert Shaw.
He arrived in Hollywood in January 1958 to take on his first true Hollywood role as a renegade cowboy in the Twentieth Century Fox western The Bravados, which starred Gregory Peck and Joan Collins. Being cast as the villlanous Messala in Ben-Hur against Charlton Heston was Stephen Boyd's greatest break through. Many other actors, including Victor Mature, Kirk Douglas, Leslie Nielsen and Stewart Granger had been considered for the part. this was a major triumph. He was tipped as the new Clarke Gable! Ben-Hur was released in December 1959 and made Boyd an international star overnight. Sixty more films followed among them

and there would have been a lot more had he not succumbed to a heart attack on the golf course. He was only 45.
He was in talks to play the role of the Regimental Sergeant Major in Euan Lloyd's The Wild Geese before his untimely death.
Boyd was cremated and his ashes were interred in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Chatsworth, California. His wife Elizabeth Mills Boyd was interred with him at the time of her death in 2007. Boyd is also remembered on his parents' grave in the Clandeboye Cemetery, Bangor, U.K.
On July 4, 2018, the Ulster History Circle, a voluntary organization which erects plaques across the Province of Ulster in the United Kingdom to celebrate people of achievement, commemorated Stephen Boyd with a blue plaque close to his birthplace at 'Moygara', Shore Road, Whitehouse (Belfast, Northern Ireland).

Stick Together

This short film was shot in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and it was made in collaboration with Ballymagroarty Hazelbank Community Partnership, Policing and Community Safety Partnerships, Youth Reach and BBC Children in Need as a tool to educate the whole community, but in particular young people 12-20yo, about some of the dangers related to substance abuse.
We decided to use a different approach to the normal finger-pointing prohibitionist one. Instead of repeating the mantra Drugs are bad, don't do drugs, we thought that underlining the issues caused by substance abuse was more relevant. In this instance, we talked to young men from a less privileged background to find out about their experiences and fears and they all expressed concern around being under the influence when on their own. This film was inspired by those conversations.

Pig Business in Northern Ireland

A public outcry has brought attention to plans for a huge, 40,000 pig factory farm near Limavady, in the picturesque landscape of Lough Foyle. We are calling on David Small (Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency) for an immediate ban on the building of factory farms! Please sign the petition today.

If the Limavady pig factory is built, at any one time, up to 40,000 pigs would be confined indoors in overcrowded, barren concrete pens. Antibiotics are commonly overused in factory farms just to keep the pigs alive in such terrible conditions. These pens become a breeding ground for antibiotic resistant bacteria that can pass from pigs to humans. Neighbours will have to suffer the stench of 66,000 tonnes of faeces (in the form of liquid slurry) being spread on surrounding fields every year - close to houses, schools and public footpaths.

There has been an alarming 26% rise in intensive US-style factory farms in the UK since 2011 - whilst simultaneously the number of smaller, high welfare farms has drastically declined . In Northern Ireland alone, permissions are currently being sought for 14 further pig factories, so stopping the Limavady proposal would potentially close the sluice gate to further applications.

This spike in pig farm applications was caused by inflated subsidies for Anaerobic Digesters, which generate electricity from pig waste. The waste slurry from this process still contains high levels of ammonia which cause respiratory problems in humans and pollutes sensitive natural habitats. According to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, 98% of ‘Special Areas of Conservation’ have already exceeded the critical threshold for ammonia at which ecological damage occurs. All UK taxpayers will have to pay the cost if Northern Ireland is fined for breaking the ‘Nitrogen Directive’.

James Orr, director of Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland, says: “Northern Ireland is already plagued by shocking levels of ammonia emissions. Releasing further ammonia from pig slurry into Northern Ireland’s ecosystems will lead to environmental disaster. Intensive agriculture and the associated problems with a massive increase in pig slurry cannot be the path to a healthy future for Northern Ireland.”

Tracy Worcester, director of Farms Not Factories, says: “Manure from pigs kept at lower densities in a more natural environment is an invaluable fertiliser, not a toxic pollutant. We can use the power of our purse to only buy from real farms, not animal factories. When buying pork, look for the high welfare labels Outdoor Bred, RSPCA Assured, Free Range or, best of all, Organic.
