Coast to Coast - Day 3 of 12 - Rosthwaite to Patterdale
Coast to Coast - Day 3 of 12 - Rosthwaite to Patterdale. The coast to coast is a 192-mile long-distance footpath in Northern England from St Bees on the West Coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the East Coast. The hike was devised by Alfred Wainwright and passes through the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

This leg can alternatively be split into 2 days, staying a night in Grasmere to break up the day. Tempting to stay in Grasmere but we felt the leg would have been too short. But if we had not been there before it would be a lovely afternoon/evening.
A beautiful walk over Grasmere Common with lovely views. However, at points it was hard to find the way, as again the path is not clearly marked, but we found there were always enough people to ask/follow.
We arrived at the Travellers Rest pub on the A591 at 1pm, in time for some lunch. We had some spare food in our rucksacks, but the option of eating hot food inside appealed more. The weather again had been mixed this morning, drying up later.
There are a couple of choices at this point, the high routes over Helvellyn or St Sunday Crag. We opted for the low level walk though Grisedale Valley, due to the length of today's walk and the weather. The high level routes would be fantastic if staying overnight in Grasmere and the weather was clear.
We followed the obvious path uphill to Grisedale Tarn, then a pretty but long walk follows Grisedale Beck to Patterdale.
We ate an early dinner at 5.30pm in the White Lion Pub, Patterdale (to avoid walking back there later), we found friendly staff and nice food. Unfortunately the village shop was closed by 6.30pm as it seems to have its own hours and shuts if quiet. So don't make our mistake; visit the shop prior to the pub.
There was not a great deal of reasonably priced accommodation in Patterdale, so we had booked Noran Bank Farm which is slightly off the C2C path, The owners were very friendly and helpful, providing us with a delicious breakfast and packed lunch for the next day (as we had missed the village shop!). The farmhouse was built in 1617, and was like going back in time.
Bed and Breakfast or Bunkhouse Rooms
By this time we realised that no-one else we met was carrying their backpacks, just day sacks, and using the Sherpa van service to transport packs to the next location. On our previous long distance walks, this facility had not always been available, and only works if the accommodation has been booked ahead. So after 3 long days of carrying full kit, we put as much stuff as possible all in the one rucksack, and had it transported for the rest of the trip. This made the upcoming long days much easier, and I would recommend this service. We paid £8.00 a day for one bag weighing up to 20kg to be shipped.

8f no.48151 with a Statesman Rail tour 'The Fellsman' - Wednesday 6th August 2014
#RibbleheadViaduct #KirkbyStephen #Settle&Carlisle
Wednesday 6th August saw my first ever visit to the Settle and Carlisle with 8f no.48151 being seen in two clips with a Statesman Rail tour 'The Fellsman'. The chance to visit came in somewhat unusual circumstances as I got married the Saturday beforehand and was on honeymoon in the Lake District! Many thanks must go to my new wife Rebecca who very kindly agreed for two round trips to the Settle and Carlisle on the Wednesday around a day trip to Sizergh National Trust property in Kendal. For a first visit Ribblehead seemed an obvious choice, without wishing to trek through the fields a view of the viaduct is chosen from just off the main road as 48151 heads north. For the return we selected another easy to access location, Kirkby Stephen station as 48151 climbs through heading south.

My Coast to Coast Walk - Day 10: Danby Wiske to Lordstones - 24/06/2019
Welcome to the tenth instalment of my 13 day journey across England following Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk.
As you have seen if you have watched the previous videos, I try to take in a few of the higher routes along the way, including Haystacks on day 2, Calf Crag on day 3, Helvellyn on day 4, Kidsty Pike on day 5 and into the Mines between Keld and Reeth on day 8.
I did the walk for charity as you can see, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. As I upload this, I have raised over £1000! A fantastic effort from all who have donated so thank you all from the deepest depths of my heart. justgiving.com/fundraising/pipes-hikes-c2c while there's still time.
So day 10 I head away from Danby Wiske, after half a mile I turn across the footpaths full of rapeseed overhanging the muddy footpaths and get soaked to the bone before I've even started. A pretty demoralising day right from the start, a day of low lying sludgy footpaths and overgrown crops hampering the progress. This on top of a 25+ mile walk yesterday and a night of heavy rain. I did not enjoy today, the only day where I can say this. The crossing of the A19 cam midway through the day then the passing through Ingleby Arncliffe and up into the foggy woods. From here on in I could see very little of my surroundings, this was to be for the next couple of days. But I pushed on across Live Moor and to Carlton Bank Moor, glad to get to the trig point and from there dropped down to Lordstones where I pitched up for the night.
I have included everything that I want to remember from my journey in my videos, I hope that it is of interest to those tuning in too.

Oscars 2015: Eddie Redmayne wins best actor
British actor Eddie Redmayne has won the best actor Oscar for The Theory of Everything, while Julianne Moore picked up best actress for Still Alice.
Redmayne thanked his staggering partner in crime, co-star Felicity Jones, and his ferocious but incredibly kind director James Marsh.
Dark comedy Birdman won best film and best director for Mexican film-maker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
It also won best cinematography and best original screenplay.
The film sees Michael Keaton play a former movie superhero actor, who hopes to revive his washed-up career by putting on a Broadway play.
Moore used her speech to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease - in Still Alice, she plays a 50-year-old who has early on-set Alzheimer's.
I'm so happy, I'm thrilled that we were able to shine a light on Alzheimer's disease, she said.
So many people who have this disease feel marginalised. People who have Alzheimer's disease deserve to be seen so we can find a cure.
Redmayne was honoured for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking, who has motor neurone disease (ALS).
Accepting his award, he thanked the Hawking family, including Jane Hawking on whose book the film is based, and said his award belonged to all of the people around the world battling ALS.
Richard Linklater's Boyhood won just one award from six nominations - best supporting actress - which went to Patricia Arquette.
Arquette thanked her Boyhood family and every woman who gave birth.
To every woman... we have fought for everybody else's equal rights. It's our time to have wage equality, she added, to huge applause from the audience.
JK Simmons won best supporting actor for Whiplash, in which he played a strict drumming teacher at a music conservatory.
Whiplash also won the award for best editing and best sound mixing.
The Grand Budapest Hotel picked up best costume design (Milena Canonero), as well as best hair and make-up (British duo Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier). It also won best score and production design.
Hannon thanked absent actor Bill Murray - who has a cameo in the film - for introducing her to director Wes Anderson on the set of his film Rushmore 17 years earlier.
Another British duo, Matt Kirkby and James Lucas, picked up the award for best live short action film, The Phone Call, starring Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent.
Alan Turing drama The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, won best adapted screenplay.
Best foreign language film went to Polish black and white family drama Ida.
John Legend and Common's track Glory, from civil rights drama Selma, won best song.
Legend used his time on stage to deliver a political message, saying: We live in the most incarcerated country in the world... people are marching with our song... we are with you, march on.
Emmanuel Lubezko's win for best cinematography for Birdman was his second Oscar in as many years - in 2014, he won the same award for his work on Gravity.
Citizenfour, which chronicles one of the biggest intelligence leaks in American history, won best documentary feature.
It shows former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden at the very moment he made his sensational revelations detailing extensive internet and phone surveillance by the US government.
Best documentary short was won by Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, about the counsellors who work with military veterans on a 24-hour phone helpline.
Clint Eastwood's Iraq war drama American Sniper won the award for best sound editing.
The 87th Academy Awards took place at Hollywood's 3,300-seat Dolby Theatre.
Performers at this year's ceremony included Lady Gaga - who sang a medley of Sound of Music songs to celebrate the classic film's 50th year - Jennifer Hudson and Anna Kendrick.
Host Neil Patrick Harris kicked off with a song which paid homage to Hollywood's film industry, accompanied by Kendrick and Jack Black.
Birdman and Wes Anderson's quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel began the night with nine nominations each, while The Imitation Game had eight.
Clint Eastwood's true-life Iraq war tale American Sniper and Boyhood had six apiece.
The best picture prize was widely predicted to either go to Birdman or Boyhood - both of which had been named best film at the many ceremonies leading up to Hollywood's biggest night.
The directors of both films did their best on the red carpet to play down any rivalry with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who eventually won for Birdman, calling the supposed competition so silly and Linklater saying he loved Birdman.
It's a real tribute for two films that aren't traditional stories, crazy stories, said Linklater, who filmed the coming of age movie over 12 years with the same actors.
