Islamic Call to Prayer at the White Mosque in Nazareth
Al Abiad (White) Mosque in Nazareth. 03.07.2013
ISRAEL: NAZARETH: MUSLIM PRAYERS
English/Nat
Muslims living in Nazareth - the town where Jesus grew up - have been told to keep 'calm and order' when the Pope arrives to celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation.
The Muslim community in Nazareth held their traditional Friday prayers outdoors in the square adjacent to the Basilica.
Christians and Muslims in the town have been in dispute over plans to build a Mosque in the shadow of the Church - a dispute that nearly scuttled the pope's visit to Nazareth.
Violent confrontations last year over the plot of land adjoining the Basilica of the Annunciation ended when the Israeli government brokered a compromise.
Two-thirds of the plot would be set aside as a piazza for Christian pilgrims, and one-third would be used for a mosque.

ISRAEL: NAZARETH: MOSQUE CORNERSTONE UNVEILED
English/Nat
Muslims unveiled the cornerstone for a mosque in Nazareth on Tuesday close to one of Israel's most sacred churches.
Christians closed key holy sites for a second day throughout Israel and the occupied territories in protest.
The row centred on a mosque which will be built just 300 metres from the Basilica of the Annunciation church - where it's believed the Virgin Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus.
The Vatican sharply criticised Israel for allowing Muslims to build the mosque next to the Basilica of the Annunciation, saying it would fuel future conflicts and tensions between Christians and Muslims in the town.
The Israeli government said it totally rejected the accusations that were made by the Holy See.
What was meant to be a formal ceremony turned into a undignified scramble when the cornerstone was finally laid - hours after it was scheduled to happen.
As the green cloth was lifted from a slab stone, a crowd of several thousands Muslims
chanted in memory of a twelfth century anti-Crusader cleric believed to be buried at the site.
Celebrating Muslims crowded onto rooftops to see the ceremony, whilst Christian shopkeepers near the disputed plaza in the heart of Nazareth, an Arab town in northern Israel, closed their stores and stayed away.
This was a symbolic gesture which has torn the Christian and Muslim communities in this normally peaceful city apart.
It has caused tensions over the last two years, with riots and threats of violence a constant menace.
One of the signatories to the closure of the churches said the Muslims were deliberately provoking dissension.
SOUNDBITE (English)
The aim is not building a Mosque. It is just to put this dissension between Christians and Muslims.

The closures left baffled pilgrims and tourists milling outside locked-up sites such as Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where tradition holds that Jesus was entombed and then rose from the dead.
In Bethlehem, believed to be the site of Jesus' birth, the small iron doors of the Church of the Nativity were closed to the visitors too.
Some visitors prayed and stuck notes into the cracks of pillars in the courtyard.

STORYLINE:
Franciscan monks gathered in front of the Israeli Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem on Sunday to congratulate Israel's decision to halt construction of a large mosque in the town.
The mosque is being built next to the Basilica of the Annunciation, the largest church in the Middle East.
Peter Vasco, spokesman for the custody of the Holy Land, was outside the Prime Minister's office.
He said: We are here demonstrating for two purposes, first to congratulate the government for their decision in temporarily holding the construction of the mosque in Nazareth and secondly, to encourage the Israeli government to pursue that goal of going back to the original goal of that site which was to become a public plaza.
Christian leaders have said building a mosque so close to a major Christian shrine is disrespectful - and stepped up protests after construction began several weeks ago.
But Muslims say a Muslim sage is buried at the site.
Salman Abu Ahmed, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nazareth, accused Christian leaders of exerting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Israel's security Cabinet decided on January 9 to stop construction, in line with a previous injunction by a local court.
U-S President George Bush has raised the subject with Sharon, and the pope threatened to cancel a millennium visit to the Holy Land over the issue.

Hi, everybody!
Let's go to Nazareth, Israel!
A bit more about Nazareth according to:
According to the Christian faith, Nazareth was home to Mary and Joseph before the birth of Christ. Located in northern Israel, this once-sleepy village is now a bustling metropolis full of Ottoman-era mansions and Roman ruins. Lofty churches, mosques, and temples pepper the city, along with both Christian and Muslim holy sites.
The Basics
Nazareth is an important Holy Land site on par with Bethlehem, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Here you can find some of the most beautiful churches in the Middle East, such as the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Church of St. Gabriel, and St. Joseph’s Church. The White Mosque is also a must-see, along with the Peace Mosque and Ela-Nabi Sa'in Mosque. For a taste of Nazareth’s diverse culture, visit the Diwan El Lajun, a multicultural performing arts center.
Nazareth is a popular day trip destination from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Most tours last at least a day, and some multi-day excursions visit Nazareth along with other important Holy Land sites such as Jericho, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, and the Sea of Galilee. Private tours are also available for a personalized experience.
Things to Know Before You Go
Nazareth is a must-see for history buffs and culture lovers.

Nazareth is located in northern Israel, near the borders of Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. By road, the city is roughly two hours from Jerusalem and 90 minutes from Tel Aviv. It’s possible to travel by bus from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, although be aware that public transportation does not run during Shabbat or on Jewish holidays.
When to Get There
You can visit Nazareth year-round, although Israel’s weather is most pleasant during spring and autumn. Most restaurants and stores close on Sundays.
Holy Sites in Nazareth
The Basilica of the Annunciation is a modern church built upon Crusade-era ruins, the remains of which are still visible on the lower level. The site’s mix of architectural styles and stunning works of art make it one of the most unique churches in Israel. Mary’s Well is another important spot, known for its beautifully restored Roman arches.
