Fancy escaping to the country for lunch, dinner or just a drink but taking only 25mins to get there from central London? The White Swan on the Thames, just a 5min walk from Twickenham station, will fit the bill. Idyllic setting opposite the magical Eel Pie island and its Nature Reserve, you can sit on the edge of the river and imagine you are in the depth of the country. The White Swan has plenty of old world charm and has just been refurbished beautifully. The food is simple fare and fabulous, and you'll love the quality as well as the attention to fair trade and food miles. Just hop on a fast train from Waterloo and you'll be here in no time. On weekends get here early in the good weather to bag your seat closest to the river and in the wintertime to get closest to the the roaring log fires. What a great place to eat in Twickenham.

TS, TWICKENHAM
A great and sound idea to really rejuvenate the riverside. Self funding and fully costed so minimal cost to the local tax payers.
JA, TWICKENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM
I would like to see more in Twickenham than pubs and charity shops.
GR,TWICKENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM
I am a local resident that would use this facility.
SN, TWICKENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM
I'd really like to see a lido in Twickenham and it would be an amazing feature for the riverside which seems to have strong financial support.
MB, TWICKENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM
At last something positive being developed for the people of Twickenham. It has been idle for far too long!
SD, TWICKENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM
It will bring a whole new lease of life to the area and generate business. We need this as the town centre is starting to die and shops are closing down.

Pub-goers stranded in beer garden by tidal flooding in west London
Footage of pub patrons stranded in a beer garden during seasonal flooding in Twickenham. The high tide in the area often causes the River Thames to burst its banks and flood the area around the White Swan pub. Cars were left submerged while residents struggled to cross roads.

Lunch at the Grand Union Pub in Twickenham was so much more than I anticipated and both Sheba and myself were thrilled at the range of burgers and the fact they had breadless ones and vegetarian options. The choice was excellent and the results very very good. The fries were not remotely necessary either as the burgers were so filling. Delicious food in delicious surroundings with ambience in abundance and very friendly staff, particularly Gina. If you decide to go there say hello from Francesca! There's a cute little patio area outside and plenty of smoochy space inside. I love all the quirky lampshades, drapes, leather sofas and plants - all adds a touch of the exotic. No doubt this is a great place to eat in Twickenham.

Twickenham - Thames Bridges ep.7
This week's bridge is Twickenham, sandwiched between the Richmond bridges.
This week Mark takes us through the history and aesthetics of the bridge, while Matt talks about the engineering. Both give the bridge a rating out of 10 one for engineering and the other for aesthetics
Remember to give the video a thumbs up, subscribe and take the survey to help us with the popularity rating.
Edward Prince of Wales opened the bridge on the 3rd July 1933. The proposed design for the bridge was far more ambitious than the final product, it comprised of four 70 foot tall towers on the river banks and retaining walls stretching 20 foot above road level. These plans were rejected following a local petition organised by the Daily Telegraph deeming the bridge to be inappropriate for the surroundings. In 1992 the UK's first Gatso Speed Camera was installed on the bridge to catch motorists exceeding 60 miles per hour on this 40 miles per hour road. Shockingly twenty two thousand nine hundred and thirty nine cars were caught in the first twenty two days of operation.
In my opinion Twickenham bridge is one of the bland and boring river crossings. The concrete used to create the bridge has resulted in a structure with no detail and plain flat sides. Hampton court bridge which was built in a similar way has been faced with red brick and Portland stone to make it more interesting. I think Twickenham bridge could be vastly improved if it was faced in a similar manner to Hampton Court.
Twickenham Bridge aimed to eliminate the need to widen Richmond Bridge, on that count it failed although it no doubt reduced the amount the oldest bridge over the Thames London needed to be extended. Colossal designs for 70 foot towers were rejected but the end product still boasts an awful lot of engineering significance. It is a reinforced concrete design like Hampton Court Bridge, taking advantage of strides made in that technology. Most Impressively it pioneered the use of three permanent hinges so the bridge could adjust when a change in temperature caused it to shrink or grow. This makes it a fantastic and significant bridge.
