4K City Walks: Whitefish Montana virtual treadmill walking tour
It's winter and we take a morning walk in Whitefish, MT. Whitefish is a little town in the northwest of Montana known for its ski hill, Big Mountain, and proximity to Glacier National Park. It's a pretty little town and friendly too. There are several great restaurants and breweries as well as boutiques, galleries, hotels, and coffee shops. It gets slammed with tourists in the summer but in the winter it's very peaceful. They do a great job with holiday lights. In fact, I considered walking at night but the downtown is so small that most of the rest of the walk would have been in the dark.
You can also catch a train to and from Whitefish and that is where we start and end our walk. In 4k Video.
Whitefish is located at an altitude of 3,028 feet (923 m). The town is located on the western side of the continental divide, near Glacier National Park.
It is a city in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 6,357 at the 2010 census. It is home to a ski resort on Big Mountain called Whitefish Mountain Resort.
The Great Northern Railway was built through what is now Whitefish in 1904, which sparked development of the town. The area was originally known as Stumptown due to the abundant amount of timber that had to be cleared to build the town and railroad and because tree stumps were left in the streets throughout downtown. Early residents of the town worked for the railroad and nearby logging industries. By the late 1940s, with the successful construction of a ski resort on Big Mountain (a collaboration among local businessmen) the tourism sector was becoming increasingly important. The community was named for its location near Whitefish Lake.
In 2006, over 68,000 passengers embarked and disembarked through the historic Whitefish Depot, a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder line, with some percentage of those being headed to the ski resort on Big Mountain.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.80 square miles (30.56 km2), of which, 6.43 square miles (16.65 km2) is land and 5.37 square miles (13.91 km2) is water.

The Whitefish Bike Park in northwestern Montana rises above the Flathead Valley near Glacier National Park. There are 25 miles of lift-served gravity trails from the summit offering over 2,000 vertical feet of descending. There are three riding areas in the park - Summit, Bad Rock and Overflow Zones. Trails range from beginner-friendly greens to expert-only double black diamond trails. The diversity ranges from manmade flow trails with huge berms and big jumps, to naturally cut trails that snake through the trees and over technical rocky sections. The Whitefish lifts operate all week June 16 - September 3, and then Friday - Sunday through September 23, 2018.

Whitefish, Montana: Eat, Stay, Shop, Play
Join me as I explore Whitefish, Montana and show you the best spots to eat, stay, shop, and play. Find out where to grab a meal and some coffee (Eat), take a look inside the Firebrand Hotel and the world's first ski-in ski-out luxury tree houses (Stay). Tour some local shops to find out where to buy souvenirs before returning home. (Shop) Then, ride along on our dog sled adventures and join us while we watch some skijoring before hitting the slopes at Whitefish Mountain Resort to do a little Montana skiing of our own. (Play)
In Jan of 2019 I had to replace some audio because the song playing in the background at the skijoring event was copyrighted. Unfortunately, this removed some of my narration, but skijoring is a fun winter sport to watch and can be enjoyed each January in Whitefish.
Sadly, the Red Caboose has closed it's doors. It is now a bakery though so you can snag some stellar treats there. Head across Main Street to Montana Coffee Traders to enjoy an amazing cup of coffee.
Some food places have closed since recording this, here are alternate suggestions:
Visit Montana Coffee Traders instead of Red Caboose
Visit Boat Club Restaurant instead of Stillwater Fish House (The elk backstrap is amazing!)
Visit Piggyback BBQ instead of McGarry's Roadhouse
Also, Stumptown Marketplace is great if everyone can't agree. They have limited hours though so check before visiting.

Trail Maps: Whitefish - Visit Montana
The terrain up at Whitefish is amazing, says Engerbretson. There's something new to discover around every corner. Every little ridgeway leads to another fun area.
Fringe of Whitefish Proven Here
As mountain bikers it is our nature to explore and get lost in the woods in search of the next prime stretch of singletrack. Riding in Whitefish and the surrounding Flathead Forrest of Montana, there are opportunities abound for us to fulfill this inner desire. Whitefish Mountain is the hub of riding activity with purpose built park jumps and rugged natural, mountain lines linking together a lift-serve experience that rivals any park in the country. We spent many an afternoon testing the limits of our trail bikes there. Venturing outside of town limits and into the fringes of this sparsely populated state, miles of trails were revealed. The high ridge-lines of the Alpine Trail network provide distant views of glaciers and what felt like endless turns. Further west, strewn between the lakes region, we found untracked dirt veiled by seasons of pine needle decay. After a week exploring the region, we began to question ourselves and ponder relocation to this alcove of like-minded riders, world-class trails, and the plethora of local breweries was an additional draw.

Montana Treasures // Whitefish with Pete Costain
Pete Costain has been referred to as the Godfather of Whitefish mountain biking more than a few times. As a long-time local and trailbuilder, he helped scratch in some of the original trails at Spencer mountain before taking his company Terraflow Trail Systems full time in 2009, legitimizing his building and expanding throughout Montana.
About the series: Every mountain bike community has its individuals who are constantly striving to progress the sport. Be it trail building, advocacy, land management or retail, every avenue is an equally important part of creating a thriving movement. Montana Treasures is a series about a few of the many people who embody the state’s greater mountain bike scene through their actions and endeavors.

Exploring Montana: Whitefish Mountain Resort (aka Big Mountain)
Whitefish Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Mountain Resort, is almost a year-round playground. In the winter, it is the area's largest ski resort. In the summer, it becomes a different type of playground. There is lift access to the summit, which has commanding views of Flathead County and beyond. There is also mountain biking, hiking and other activities to choose from. It is definitely worth a stop, if only for the view from the summit. You can shell out some cash and take the lift up, or use your own two feet.
