From the Valleys to Wallander -- The new 'Coalfaces' exhibition at the Winding House
Friday 3rd May saw the official opening of an insightful new exhibition at the Winding House in New Tredegar.
'Coalfaces: a mining community in photos -- Bargoed in the 1970s' features a series of remarkable and personal photographs taken in and around the Bargoed area in the 1970s by a young Swedish photographer, Kjell-Åke Andersson.
Andersson has gone on to be a hugely successful film and TV director, most recently working on BBC4's Wallander.
Joining the esteemed photographer at the launch were his daughter, who was only 7 months old when her family came to stay in Bargoed, and his grandson Bill.
Also present were members of the family with whom Andersson stayed and some of the children featured in the photographs. These residents were able to give extra insight into the joys and hardships felt by the community at the time.
Cllr Harry Andrews, Leader of Council who welcomed Andersson and his family said, This exhibition gives due recognition to the quite incredible experience Mr Andersson had whilst in Bargoed. These photographs captured the Bargoed area just before the closure of the Bargoed Colliery and capture the unique experiences of this mining community. I'd like to thank Mr Andersson for donating these images to us so that both young and old can experience the remarkable sense of community.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 4th May and will be on display until Spring 2014. The Winding House is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 10am-5pm and admission is free.

Caerphilly Library Official Opening 10th January 2014
The brand new facility boasts a range of must see features offering an enhanced Library and Customer Service Centre experience.
The building is prominently placed in the heart of Caerphilly town centre replacing the former Post Office. The impressive three storey facility has been sympathetically designed using the stone from the existing Post Office in order to compliment the architecture of the surrounding buildings.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Caerphilly Castle, the building will be home to a number of services offering residents a one-stop shop style community facility. The Customer Service Centre will form part of the ground level and will offer an extended range of service for residents' ease of use.
The ground level will also be home to a grab and go style library section for customers who are short of time. The versatile space will offer a range of activities including adult reading groups, Welsh reading groups, IT and adult education classes, events and author visits, children's activities, customer services, payments and much more.
Cabinet Member for Education & Lifelong Learning Rhianon Passmore, said: I was fortunate enough to have visited the site on a number of occasions during the build to see the progress. It is an impressive facility which will offer a range of new and improved services.
She added, We have continued to invest in this valuable service in these austere times right across the Caerphilly county borough, this has ensured that we are able to offer our residents top quality services.
The top floor of the library, which offers the best view in the house, will also play host to a museum area for themed exhibitions from the Winding House, New Tredegar.
The Library will operate Monday to Friday between 9:30am to 6pm, closing at the slightly later time of 7pm on Wednesday, and Saturday 9:30am to 4pm.
The Customer Service provision will also be available from the 6th January opening Monday to Thursday 8:45am to 4:45pm, Friday 8:45am to 4:15pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.

Cefn Coed remembered
The closure of much of Cefn Coed hospital in Swansea marks the end of an era. The architecture of the building and history held within are from a time long gone. This film records some of the last moments of the old asylum system of psychiatric care through images and the memories of hospital staff.
I spent almost a year making this film, visiting the hospital and exploring the closed off sections. I was allowed to get to the top of the water tower several times and given permission to fly a drone with Andy over the hospital and it's grounds. I also had access to oral histories being recorded with members of staff past and present and was lucky enough to attend a few of the interviews at the hospital too. The film has been shown on a loop at Swansea museum for the past 6 months as part of the Cefn Coed Remembered exhibition.

Caphouse Colliery Steam Winding Engine
The steam winding engines that were in common place in our coal mines are now a distant memory to those but a privileged few. In the mid 70’s I was fortunate enough to see both the Donisthorpe and Marquis (Rawdon) Collierys steam winders in operation.
All three winders operated on shafts around 300 yards deep, at Donisthorpe Colliery the winder said he could manage around 58 runs an hour. He said the cage would be running at 30 feet per second.
