MANILART 2010
29 July -- 01 August 2010
Hall 4, SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City
GRANT APPROVED:
Php 3,350,000.00
GRANTEE:
NCAG -- Bonafide Art Galleries Organization (BAGO), Inc.
PROGRAM:
Program for the Promotion of Culture and Arts -- Culture and Arts Exhibits
COMMITTEE:
SCH -- National Committee on Art Galleries
MANILART 2010 is a follow-up to the immensely successful MANILART 09, which benefited almost 300 visual artists and with over 5,000 visitors. This year's MANILART showcases a total of 70 booths, each measuring 12 to 24 sqm. 35% bigger than the previous venue. There are 30 allotted booths for the BAGO member galleries while the remaining 40 will be open for both regional and foreign galleries. The National Committee on Art Galleries (NCAG) served as the screening body for the participants of the fair.
For 2010, the MANILART promises the benefits of: 1) stirring awareness of the Philippine visual arts among the general public including the international art community as initiated by MANILART 09; 2) promotion of cooperation between various art galleries throughout the country and the Southeast Asian region; 3) show off talents and diversity of Philippine visual artists; 4) give Filipinos and foreigners alike a better understanding of Philippine visual arts through lectures and seminars, and forums and discussions; 5) sustain interest through the annual hosting of such projects; 6) turning the country slowly into a visual art destination at par with Hong Kong and Taiwan; 7) serving as educational tool for students and professionals; and 8) challenge and encourage Filipino visual artists to produce artworks of prime quality.
The sixty-five (65) participating galleries are consisted of thirty-seven (37) returning exhibitors, nineteen (19) new exhibitors, and nine (9) museums and cultural centers including GSIS Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and the National Museum. Each participating gallery has the option of exhibiting whoever resident artist they want while other artworks are stored and only available on catalogs for prospective buyers.
The opening gala was held last July 29, 2010 and was by-invitation-only. Gracing the evening were NCCA Chairman Vilma Labrador, NCCA Executive Director Malou Jacob, Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, beauty queens Miriam Quiambao and Nina Ricci Alagao, Jessie Mendez, international bag designer Rocio Olbes, Rep. Lani Mercado, Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo, Epi Quizon, Carmi Martin, Cong. Sonny Angara, and artist Juvenal Sanso among others. There were performances from Noel Cabangon, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde and the Ballet Manila, and Grace Nono that received warm applause from the audience. DJ Christina Badkiss rendered sound mixes in-between that entertained some of the guests. Hors d'oeuvres were catered by Chef Stephanie Zubiri of Modern Epicurean Kitchen and wines from Wine Story.
The exhibit was open to the public from July 30 -- August 01, 2010 from 11am to 8pm. The fair happened over the weekend that maximized the volume of fairgoers and students from various schools. The galleries presented contemporary artworks by various artists both regionally and here in the metro with over 500 artworks that plays with a variety of medium from oils to acrylic, to wires and glass. One particular gallery on the other hand utilized the use of AVP presentation to convey the artwork. Some, a fusion of everything else. Works of national artists like Ben Cab and Arturo Luz were also exhibited altogether with works of young artists.
Various activities happened simultaneously onstage and at the lecture room. These activities include the lectures, MANILART auction, nude sketching session, the Ateneo Art Awards, public graffiti demonstration, and the on-the-spot painting session. Lectures and seminars were also held at the makeshift lecture room adjacent to the stage that attracted more people. The discussions ranged from art conservation to artwork photography to giving critiques on contemporary artworks. The resource speakers were: Anna Sobrepeña, Cid Reyes, Jose Tence Ruiz, Alexandra Bothello, and Ross Capili.
The project was implemented by the Bonafide Art Galleries Organization, Inc. or BAGO, a non-stock, non-profit organization registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission presently composed of thirty (30) member art galleries that aims for the promotion of the Philippine visual art by putting up art fairs and events locally and participating internationally. It is represented by its president, Mr. Jonathan T. Sy.
The NCCA granted assistance amounted to Three Million Three Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos only (Php 3,350,000.00) to cover for personnel, honoraria, other services, and supplies and materials.

ST. JOSEPH PARISH CHURCH Barcelona, Sorsogon
The St. Joseph Parish Church in Barcelona town is one of the oldest churches in the country. Made of coral glued together by a mixture of egg whites and coconut wine, the church is a proud testament of how Sorsogon, an old Spanish outpost, withstood the test of time. The church facade and bell tower are preserved from the original structure built by the Franciscans in 1874, but the interiors of the church have seen renovations. In front of the church are the seaside Barcelona Ruins, including that of the Presidencia, the seat of power of the Spanish gobernadorcillo. There are buses that travel straight to Gubat from Cubao or Pasay (13 hours). You may also visit Gubat by plane via Legazpi (45 minutes from Manila), from which you may take a shuttle to the town.
