The Shearers
Excerpt from the documentary film showing a shearing team at a typical sheep station.
This clip from 1950 shows activities in a typical wool shed on a sheep station in Victoria. It opens with information about the shearers' clothes and the equipment they use. Workers are shown rolling, sorting, baling and pressing wool for export. The clip is from a black-and-white Commonwealth Government documentary directed by Hugh Alexander and narrated by Ted Smith.

Brilliant Yurt Design! - Mixing Tradition with Super Modern Construction
In this video, we're meeting Pat from Yurta to get a behind the scenes look at how they make traditional yurts with natural materials while incorporating some very modern design ideas.
These yurts can be set up in just a couple of hours and are built with 3 layers:
- A collapsible wooden frame with a tension cable to determine the height of the structure,
- A wool felt insulation layer that is needled with with a reflective layer to provide breathable insulation,
- An acrylic-coated polyester/cotton outer shell to provide a breathable yet weather resistant cover.
The modern touches that are found in Yurta's yurts, but not in traditional Mongolian yurts, are large windows and a clear dome. The dome can be opened to allow heat to escape and it provides a beautiful natural light even on cloudy days.
Mat and I had fun helping Pat deploy a yurt frame and learning how simple and portable a yurt really is. We also like the fact that it's considered a tent in many places so it's an affordable 4-season tiny house alternative that often doesn't require a building permit. On top that, we're huge fans of building homes with natural, sustainable, renewable materials that have few chemicals in them.
Many people like yurts for their simple design, for their portability, and for the wonderful feeling they get living in a round walled dwelling.
To learn more about Yurta yurts, you can check out their website here:
Thanks for watching!

HRH The Prince of Wales hosts Campaign for Wool's 5th Anniversary
To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Campaign for Wool, the campaign's Patron His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales hosted a major celebration of wool at Clarence House. Attended by a host of key guests representing brands and fashion designers from the Wool Collection, the occasion was marked with enlightening talks by very special guests including Nicholas Coleridge CBE, Chairman of the Campaign for Wool (pictured below with HRH The Prince of Wales). Seeking to highlight two of the Campaign's most frequently made claims regarding wool's benefits: firstly, that it is a supremely safe fibre thanks to its natural fire retardant properties and that secondly, wool quickly biodegrades in soil -- a key ecological benefit, the day centred around two tests and an immersive wool fashion and interiors presentation.
How to Crochet a Giant Circular Rug - No-Sew
Ever wondered how to make a HUGE, awesome rug that feels like clouds beneath your feet? Well, wonder no more. Enjoy the tutorial!
WHERE TO GET ROVING:
Have fun and be sure to post your giant rug pictures on your favorite social network and share with me! Thanks!
I used soft merino wool which is more spendy than other types of roving, so feel free to use Corriedale wool or BFL (Blue-Faced Leicester) wool, or even cotton, bamboo or any other type of wool.
Another option is to cut 2-3 strips of fabric and use that. That's a much cheaper route. The roving can cost several hundred dollars for this size of rug. I used 7.5 lbs total.

For years, live exporters have assured the Australian public the safety and well-being of the sheep is their priority. But as Liam Bartlett reports, we have all been lied to. 60 Minutes have obtained secret video exposing disturbing animal cruelty and a shameful industry.
For forty years, 60 Minutes have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. Tales that changed history, our nation and our lives.

Table manners are actually something your parents taught you but are actually far more important as an adult. First of all, your table manners speak volumes about your refinement and it's often interpreted as a sign of character. It's not at all about being snobby or showing off but much rather show respect, your host and your dining partners will greatly appreciate your manners.
It's very important to keep in mind, proper table manners aways help you and never hurt you. The good thing is they can be learned and its never too late to do so.
So what are table manners?
I suggest you turn your cell phone ringer off when you enter someone else's home and put your phone in your pocket when you're with the guests. Don't leave your phone on the table because you are much more likely to pick it up and look at it which is impolite In the presence of other people.
If the table is all set, you don't just walk in and sit down. Wait to be seated or wait for the queue of the host, or if they sit, you can sit as well.
Ideally, want to sit up straight but comfortably, don't slouch, or cross your arms, or sit as you would on your couch while watching a football game.
Don't expect to sit next to your partner and follow the lead of the hosts. Traditionally, couples were always mixed up to sit with different people.
If there's a napkin on the plate or next to a plate, put it on your lap right away. If the host or hostess wants to say grace, accept the gesture for what it is and move along.
Two, let's take a look at the place setting. In the Western world, an informal place will always have at least a plate, a knife, and a fork. If dessert will be served, you'll find either a little fork or a spoon on the top side of the plate. If soup is served or anything else that requires a spoon, you will also have a spoon. On the top right of the plate, you'll likely find a water glass which is always filled and a wine glass which is empty, to begin with. Sometimes you also find beer glasses; if you prefer that, if that's what's served with a meal. If you see little plate with an extra knife on a top left to your plate, that's for bread and butter. When you're done with the course, you place the fork and a knife at a four to five o'clock angle that means you're done.
Three, now it's time to serve the food. Most informal dinners are family-style meaning there are bowls or platters where food is served from. For formal dinners, courses are usually plated but we talk about the intricacies of that in our formal dining etiquette video here.
With bowls and anything at the table, the cardinal rule is, don't reach over anybody else and don't touch them. To start, pass the bowl around the table from the left to the right when you get the bowl you hold it and you serve yourself then you pass it on to your neighbor on the right. Always use the serving utensils and never your silverware that's on your place setting. Of course, if the host or hostess has a different idea, go with what they do.
Four, finally it's time to eat. You should only start eating when everyone else has been served and a host or hostess starts to take their fork and take the lead. It is very impolite and sometimes even rude to just dig into your plate of food while the others are still empty-handed.

The Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) was first brought to New Zealand from Australia in 1837 with the view to establishing a fur trade. Until 1940 the possum was protected from hunting to maintain the population. However the possum was a very successful animal in New Zealand conditions. Without any natural predators the population quickly rose and the animals spread across much of the country. With the rising numbers of possums the destruction of the native and exotic habitats which it invaded became more and more clear. When studies began to show that the possum was a major carrier of bovine tuberculosis and was implicated in the spread of the disease to farm animals, such as cattle and deer, the possum was finally recognised for the pest it certainly is in New Zealand.
Possums are omnivorous, feeding on trees, shrubs, pasture and even bird eggs and insects. They are selective browsers of native trees and alter the ecosystems in which they live. Possums strip the foliage from mature trees and then return to eat the new growth frequently with the result that the tree dies. They have also been filmed attacking Kiwi nests and eating the eggs and young.
The fur is quite unusual in that it is essentially a hollow tube that traps air which makes it by weight one of the lightest yet warmest natural furs on the market today. Possum fur won't freeze and is very similar to the fur of the Polar Bear. Unlike wool fibres the fur of the possum is smooth which gives that silky luxurious feeling like Mink.
The New Zealand Government through the Dept of Conservation has an active control programme mainly through the use of strategic drops of 1080 poison. (sodium monofloroacetate). The bulk of the possums however are killed by private enterprise through trapping, poisoning and shooting. It is by this method that we see the biggest benefit to our flora and fauna as there is no bi-kill of other species. 1080 does tend to kill other species. Especially at risk are pet dogs or Wekas (native ground dwelling bird) feeding on poisoned carcases. It is extremely important that private enterprise is encouraged to continue and by your purchase of a possum product you are doing your bit to help stem the tide of destruction in New Zealand. It is our intention that by educating people about the damage the New Zealand Brushtail Possum is doing to our environment we can help to save and protect many endangered species.
We are New Zealands leading supplier of possum products and we are actively involved in promoting the reduction of possum numbers in New Zealand

Young Man Builds Stunning School Bus Tiny House for Only $4,500 - Debt Free Mobile Home
Aaron converted this vintage baby blue school bus into a debt free tiny home for less than $4,500, and the interior design is absolutely stunning.
You can follow Aaron and his bus adventures on Instagram here:
He traded an older vehicle for the bus, and used mostly reclaimed wood to build DIY storage spaces and a bed frame; and the countertop is made from a goat teeter totter.
Most of the decor has been thrifted and specifically chosen to match the era of the bus, which is a 1959 Ford B600 Warden Master. Pretty intense name for a school bus isn't it?
Since filming the video, Aaron has insulated the bus conversion for winter, and added a full solar power system for off-grid living.
The skoolie's name is Dorf because a previous owner switched the F and the D in Ford on the front grill, and Aaron's dog is an Australian Cattle rescue pup named Chevy.
Aaron built this school bus conversion because he wanted to try something new, exciting, and off the beaten path, and so far he's been having a great time exploring British Columbia and meeting new people in the bus. He says he has to build 30 extra minutes into his schedule every time he takes the bus somewhere to account for all the time he spends chatting with people.
We filmed this video at the Go-Van El Campo meet-up in BC, where we had a blast meeting other nomads on wheels. You can follow Go-Van on Facebook and Instagram to find out about future El Campo meet-ups:

The Devlin family lives on a remote farm in Australia, left alone to live an existence based upon the most important thing in their lives: God.
But when their eldest daughter disappears, a local cop's arrival ruptures their carefully isolated world. His investigation unearths disturbing aspects of the family, but the truth is much darker than anyone imagines.
Writer-director Robert Linsley's powerful and disturbing drama focuses its meticulous, precise sense of craft and storytelling on the nature of religious fanaticism, and its insidious influence on the most intimate and personal aspects of a family and human being.
It begins with a remarkable sense of economy and mystery, with little dialogue and explicit information given by the pared-down writing to guide the viewers. Yet the striking images -- washed out in color, sweeping in motion yet precise and almost rigid in their sense of composition -- are rich with meaning and implication. This family's world is ordered by its adherence to religion, at the cost of love, connection and intimacy. In the place of these elements are pain, punishment, isolation and the sacrifice of anything resembling familial affection in service of a punitive God.
The arrival of the police detective moves the story forward, and his search for answers moves us deeper into this strange, ominous world. As the film's beacon of normality, viewers can see that what he uncovers is disturbing and horrific, and distinctly disordered.
The film's range of performances also reflect this: as the detective, actor Sam O'Dell has the facile and ease of a modern world, but his opposing counterparts -- led by actors Gary Sweet and Alison Whyte as the Devlin parents -- seem to exist in another old-fashioned, strangely constrained story entirely. The chasm between the styles works well here, especially as the forces that each side represents clash against one another.
As the narrative momentum moves forward, Ritual gains in speed and suspense, working its way into a finely wrought ending sequence worthy of thriller status. There's even a subtle yet stunning reveal that may prompt viewers to re-watch, searching for clues that the elegantly sculpted writing carefully tucked away in plain sight.
But even as it picks up in tension, the film's richly conceived world and atmosphere guarantees that the film's central concerns and questions are never lost. What is the role of religious belief, and what kind of influence does it wield on human lives, especially when those lives are stripped bare of anything else? The answers teased at here are disturbing, but are in perfect alignment with the film's considerable aesthetics -- and resulting in a remarkable unity of thought, emotion and atmosphere that makes for intelligent, compelling storytelling.

Definitely potential in agriculture. The price of commodities are quite good, just depends if the weather comes our way and we can crack a crop and some decent seasons for our livestock as well. We can make a bit of money, its obviously out of our control.

LEAD IN:
In these days of drought and rising costs, selling off the family farm has become a familiar story in rural areas of Australia.
But now the next generation of farmers is fighting back.
STORYLINE:
It's not just livestock hit hard by the drought, but Australia's next generation of farmers.
At 24 Robert Watt, a farmer from Alectown, a region of Australia, has had seven seasons on the farm, but not one year of profit.
He says the drought plus a sharp spike in farming costs has left a generational hole on farms.
Robert Watt also says that lots of his friends have given up their job at the farm and have reluctantly gone to work in the mine to make a decent living.
He says most young people have considered selling up and explains that the prospect of not earning any money could eventually push him to leave as well.
Robert Watt has joined fifty other young farmers at a meeting in Sydney recently to work out ways to get more people back on the land.
And some say farm finance is the key.
Sam Gunn, the chairman of the young farmers committee says that encouraging young people to get the first farm buyers grant is important to help them get back into farming.
The farmers who stay on the land face new challenges. They have to manage with less rain and decide which crops suit the changing conditions.
Robert Watt also says there is potential in agriculture to make some money, but external conditions such as the weather are elements that cannot be anticipated and controlled.
