World's Largest Fork - VIDEO PREVIEW (Near Route 66, Springfield, Missouri)
Accessible 24/7, just a short detour from Route 66, I present: The World's Largest Fork! LOL!
------
The giant fork in Springfield is impressive even at night. A guard in a security vehicle idling nearby sensed that we had no destructive intent. He let us be, at least until we placed a camera on the pavement for a long exposure -- and then he was just interested in the digital camera (and its pixel resolution).
At 35 feet tall and 11 tons, the fork angles up toward a three-story building occupied by Noble & Associates, a Springfield ad agency. Our own local associates tell us that in 1998 the fork stood in front of a restaurant that failed on South Glenstone, in otherwise booming Springfield. The ad agency hauled the fork across town to its new office building, where it's been ever since. Noble does a lot of work for the food service and retail industry, so the fork makes sense....
A plaque at its base brags that it's The World's Largest Fork, which may be true. But it's not a Springfield boast. Here behind the ad agency, not immediately visible along the main thoroughfare, the fork seems placed mostly for the benefit of employees and visiting clients. International symbol signs on nearby highways would only result in misdirected traffic -- for although the greenery at its base could be interpreted as food, there's nothing to eat here, folks.

Big Springs - The largest spring in Missouri
Father & Son Adventure To Big Springs
The largest spring in Missouri and one of the largest in the world with a daily discharge of 276 million gallons on average.
Follow the spring run to the Current River, a nationally biologically important river.
Enjoy birding along the Current River in spring and summer for a diversity of songbirds.
NATURAL HISTORY:
The name says it all. Big Spring is indeed a big spring and the biggest in Missouri in terms of average daily discharge with some 276 million gallons of cool spring water (58 degrees Fahrenheit) flowing from it each day. This is one of the largest springs in the world. A dye-trace study has showed that dye introduced into a losing stream 39.5 miles away (near Mountain View) was detected at Big Spring 16 days later. This is the longest distance groundwater trace in the U.S. Large springs such as this depend on large areas of karst landscape to recharge them. The spring is at least 80 feet deep based on research dives.
The spring run of Big Spring provides cool water that feeds the Current River. Within the spring run, characteristic Ozark fishes include the Ozark sculpin and the bleeding shiner. Star duckweed, a plant species restricted to springs, occurs in the spring branch along with a variety of other plant species characteristic of springs including water starwort.
Downstream of Big Spring the Current River boasts a fish fauna rich in diversity including colorful darters and shiners (e.g., rainbow darter, bleeding shiner, and rosyface shiner,) and game fishes (e.g., shadow bass or goggle-eye, longear sunfish, walleye, and smallmouth bass). The Current River saddled darter has been located downstream of Big Spring. This fish species occurs only in the Current River watershed and nowhere else in the world. The Current River is of global conservation significance according to The Nature Conservancy and provides habitat for 35 global priority aquatic species of which 25 have their best or only populations on Earth in the river. The Nature Conservancy considers the Current River and its watershed to be the crown jewel of Missouri’s native landscapes. Birding along the Big Spring branch and along the nearby Current River you may spot the rare cerulean warbler. Other birds to look for include the kingfisher, the American redstart, the wood thrush, the red-shouldered hawk, and the northern parula.
The Big Spring area became a state park in 1925 and was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression era of the 1930s. In 1972 the area was transferred to the newly created Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

Eagle Falls Zip Line - 1 of 3 - Eminence, MO
For Easter Break, 2016, we visited southern Missouri.
This is Eagle Falls Zip line, in Eminence, on the banks of the Jacks Fork River.
Four of us rode the five zip lines.
Our son recorded these on his GoPro HERO 4 Silver.
Our ride order was the same on each of the zip lines: 1) daughter, 2) son, 3) wife/mother, 4) husband/father/me.
We have ~ 45 minutes of video.
Our son’s zip line rides are at the following points in each video:
Eagle Falls Zip Line - 1 of 3 - Eminence, MO
(
Zip Line 1: ~ 3:30
Zip Line 2: ~ 13:00
Eagle Falls Zip Line - 2 of 3 - Eminence, MO
(
Zip Line 3: ~ 9:00
Zip Line 4: ~ 16:00
Eagle Falls Zip Line - 3 of 3 - Eminence, MO
(
Zip Line 5: ~ 6:00
-------
Eagle Falls is the first zip line in Missouri and was amazing!!!
We rode in a light rain; we all think we zipped just a little quicker because the zip cables were wet.
Eagle Falls has five zip lines.
I only had the phone tracking our GPS for the latter three.
For those we covered .3 miles, and at speeds up to 17.6 mph!
The team members riding with us shared the first zip line is the longest, so the math works that we zipped at least .5 / half a mile, possibly longer. The site states : “Approx. 4,000’ ” which is almost .3/4 / .75 mile.
We were there on Easter Wednesday, in spring / before the summer season started, so we had the place to ourselves.
We were there ~ 1.5 hours total, and on the lines ~ 45 minutes.
-------
On our trip, we also:
- zip lined at Eagle Falls -
They also have night zips -
- visited Grand Gulf State Park (
- saw Laura Ingall-Wilder (and Almonzo's home) (
- visited Bass Pro Shop in Springfield (
- stayed at Round Springs Retreat
( and which is just north of Eminence (

Pensmore Mansion Update May 11th 2018
Update on the Pensmore Mansion 05-11-2018
Pensmore, The 72,000-square-foot Ultimate Tornado-Proof Home under construction in Highlandville, Missouri
This is the latest video I could find to share with you. It’s unfinished and still MINDBLOWING!
In the Midwest, Steve Huff is aiming to build the ultimate tornado-proof home. Mr. Huff, a software entrepreneur, is building a 70,000-square-foot reinforced-concrete, chateau-style home in rural Christian County, Mo. The home, known as Pensmore, has 12-inch-thick walls and ballistic-proof windows that have been tested to withstand the equivalent of a two-by-four board traveling at 40 miles an hour, mimicking the speed at which debris can be hurtled during a big storm. If a tornado came up, you'd be foolish to leave this house, Mr. Huff says.
Mr. Huff, who is an investor in a concrete company, says that the home will also be resistant to intruders: It would be like trying to drill your way through a bank vault.
When it is completed in early 2014, it will be one of the largest private homes in America. Mr. Huff says he plans to have lots of extended family stay with him, as well as visiting writers, scientists and other students who may want to study the safety and environmentally sustainable technologies used to construct the home.

More On Pensmore:
The building, called Pensmore, promises to be one of the largest residential homes in the country when construction is completed — 72,000 square feet of living space that includes 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and enough amenities to entertain a small city.
But instead of appearing in New York or Florida, where lavish living requires no explanation, the mansion was built in a thickly wooded plot of land in Christian County, halfway between Springfield and Branson. The nearest major landmark is a cathedral that bills itself as the smallest in world.
“It’s really strange, and we’re thinking something’s up,” said Michele Grider, who lives just down the road. “If there was a nuclear thing they could hide a bunch of important people there.”
The owner, Steven T. Huff, 60, has heard all the “goofy speculation,” as he calls it. His background — he sold the company he founded that makes software for military and intelligence agencies to Textron several years ago — has encouraged the rumors. But he said that his current work prompted him to build such a large second home.
As a major investor and board chairman of TF Concrete Forming Systems, he wanted to demonstrate the viability of new concrete technology that he believes will lower energy consumption. The size of the building, which is significantly larger than the White House, partly reflects a desire to build at a commercial scale for testing purposes, he said. He adds that he plans to have many guests.
The house — officially a single-family residence — has been under construction for nearly two years, and a recently posted Web site shows its progress. There are probably another two years to go before it is completed, which has irritated some neighbors who say the work has disrupted the serenity of the area and has cut off what used to be prime hunting grounds. Mr. Huff would not reveal the cost. (Though the purchase price of the land is not public, Christian County records show the more than 500 acres, historically used for logging and grazing cattle, was appraised at just over $50,000.)
Mr. Huff, a longtime resident of Virginia, chose the site on Woods Fork Road because it is just hours from his boyhood home. Also, he said building in that part of the country would help him show how the technology handles both hot and cold weather and even tornadoes. Finally, there is another advantage — by locating in an area famous for a small government approach, he is not subject to building regulations or inspection, which he said would have complicated his efforts.
“We try not to be more intrusive than we have to,” said Todd Wiesehan, planning and zoning administrator for the county. He added that Mr. Huff had nevertheless invited some local officials to tour the construction site. “You don’t appreciate just how large it is until you drive up,” Mr. Wiesehan said. “It’s very, very big.” Support Me Here At This Link
