Erfunden wurde die einschienige Schwebebahn von dem Kölner Ingenieur Eugen Langen1898 war Baubeginn.2 Jahre danach konnte sich Kaiser Wilhelm II von diesem technischen Wunderwerk überzeugen mit einer Probefahrt am 24.Oktober 1900 von Elberfeld nach Vohwinkel.
Die Streckenlänge beträgt 13,3 km mit 20 Bahnhöfen.
Am 21.Juli 1950 sprang der junge Elefant Tuffi während der Cirkus-Werbefahrt aus dem fahrenden Schwebebahnzug kopfüber in die Wupper.Er kam zum Glück mit einer Schramme an seinem Hinterteil davon.
Das fogenschwerste Unglück ereignete sich am 12.April 1999. Bei Bauarbeiten stürzte durch eine vergessene Schienenkralle der Zug in die Wupper.5Fahrgäste verloren ihr Leben,47 Personen wurden verletzt.

It is amazing to see how this centuries old transportation is still providing fast, efficient, smooth, pollution free, traffic free transportation today! The new trains which entered service in 2017 are sleek and modern. They have a sightseers window in the back perfect for viewing the river and city from above!
This is my second visit to Wuppertal and it does not disappoint!

The people of Wuppertal know it, however, as the Old Lady (Alte Dame) or the Steel Dragon (Der stählerne Drache). Designed by Eugen Langen, who originally planned to build it in Berlin, it was built in 1900, opened in 1901 and is still in use today as a local transport system in the city. It is the oldest monorail system in the world.

It's the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world. It is a unique system, designed by Eugen Langen. Built in 1897-1901 this construction still serves as a common public transport system. The 'flying wagons' run for 13.3 kilometres at a height of 8 to 12 meters above the River Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße. The railway crosses the A46 motorway. The trip takes only 30 minutes. In this clip we follow the complete track from the western terminus at Vohwinkel to the eastern terminus at Oberbarmen.

Ha la particolarità di utilizzare convogli appesi a una rotaia posta su una struttura portante elevata rispetto alla superficie stradale. Entrata in funzione nel 1901 è, per tale motivo, la più antica ferrovia di questo tipo al mondo.
