Laygate Stories - Sibil
In 35 years on Frederick Street, Sibil has witnessed how business has been transformed. Her store caters to people expecting children: It's a proper old fashioned baby shop so we sell things right from when they first come in and say they are pregnant. Sibil reflects on how families have changed over the years, and ponders the possiblity of retirement given tough economic times.
This film is part of 'Laygate Stories' - see - a multimedia project that portrays, in their own voices, the lives of those living and working in the Laygate area of South Shields on Tyneside, in the north-east of England. It is produced by Peter Fryer and David Campbell, and is part of an Arts Council England funded commission ('Homelands') organised by the Side Gallery in Newcastle.
The work is centred on the diverse community along Frederick St and the Laygate area. This is a vibrant area made up of indigenous north-easterners, a long established Yemeni community -- who were once migrants but now includes second and third generation British citizens -- as well as people from Angola, Bangladesh, the Congo, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Poland and Somalia.
Through existing contacts and friendships within the community, we are documenting the daily interactions of the different social groups that constitute this community. The work does not profess to be an all encompassing overview of the area but uses short photo-films to give people a platform to express their everyday thoughts, feelings and concerns, and to reflect on their place within the community.
This project builds on our earlier work in this area, especially the ten-minute photo film 'The Boarding House'. It is also inspired by The New York Times 'One in 8 Million' project, which uses sound and images to introduce characters in that city. Their purpose was to showcase ordinary people telling extraordinary stories, of passions and problems, relationships and routines, vocations and obsessions.
We have endeavoured to show the everyday, believing that this gives an insight into the extraordinary things people have to offer and the different histories they have to tell. We have also ensured that those who volunteered to speak are involved in the way their stories are produced.
We are grateful to the Side Gallery, the Arts Council England, and the Baring Foundation for support.

13 CHILDREN OF POOR BACKGROUNDS DURING THE VICTORIAN ERA
Photos from vintag.es Photos from vintag.es For petty crimes such as stealing daily necessities such as food and clothing, they have faced hard labor and jail. And these haunting photographs show the stern and haggard faces of Victorian criminal children who were sentenced to tough punishments in the 1870s, with many looking remarkably older than their actual ages.
The children in the shots were all from poor backgrounds. The incredible pictures show a range of children who were sentenced to a range of punishments from ten days of hard labor to two months in prison. Other eye-opening images reveal the stern and haggard appearances of the convicted children – with many looking significantly older than their actual ages.
The photographs were colorized by expert Tom Marshall and provided by the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.
I colorize photos to bring faces, like that of these convicted children, to life and hopefully allow people to imagine their circumstances and how they must have felt at the time. Marshall said. This period shows the real people behind 'official' histories – people that are from the lowest levels of society, those really struggling to survive. The pictures were found when Newcastle jail in Carliol Square was demolished.

Charity shops hit by downturn
Charity shops in Newcastle are feeling the pinch as donations dry up due to current economic problems. Some branches are reporting that people are turning to auction websites such as eBay to sell their unwanted items, instead of giving them to good causes.
1950s Welfare Hall Opening Celebrations
BIG NEWS! Our 1950s welfare hall will be opening on Saturday, 22nd June – the first building in our 1950s Town!
Saturday, 22nd June: The grand opening of our replica of Leasingthorne Colliery Welfare Hall and Community Centre will begin with a fantastic parade, starting from our Events Field at 1pm. The procession will make its way through our 1900s Town street to the welfare hall, for the official unveiling of our first 1950s exhibit.
After the opening ceremony, enjoy music and performances, take part in 1950s fun and games, visit our NHS clinic and find out more about the hall’s programme of 1950s activities.
Sunday, 23rd June: The celebrations continue with a day of 1950s fun, including skiffle songs from Journey Coundon, at 12.30pm and 1.30pm and a tea dance from 2.30pm-4.30pm.
Our hall is a replica of the Leasingthorne Colliery Welfare Hall and Community Centre, which was built in 1957. The original hall, now known as Coundon and Leeholme Community Centre, is still at the heart of its community and the museum has been working closely with people in the area on the project.
The hall is the first building in our 1950s Town, which is part of the £20million Remaking Beamish project – the biggest development in the museum’s history. Thanks to the money raised by National Lottery players, the Remaking Beamish project has been awarded £10.9million by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
