Beacon Pike Penrith Cumbria
Haunting History of ~ Beacon Hill, Penrith , Cumbria, England
Penrith lies less than 3 miles (5 km) outside the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. The Roman fort of Voreda occupied the site now known as Old Penrith, five miles north of the town.
Penrith’s stone-built beacon is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Penrith area.
Gibbet Hill (aka Beacon Hill ) is four miles from Penrith. It used to feature a gibbet. The spot is now marked by a stone. It is here that the body of murderer, Thomas Nicholson, was displayed for public edification on the 31 August 1767. When the corpse had become putrified and maggot infested - some seven months later - it was taken down and buried. Some say the grisly cadaver still makes guest appearences at the gibbet on cold winter nights. Hanged for the murder of his godfather, Nicholson's body was left dangling throughout the winter of 1766 / 1767 as a deterrent to others... Some say it still makes an appearance during harsh winters, his skeletal remains hanging from a gibbet. The story is this : In November 1766, Thomas Parker, a butcher, was on his way home from market in Penrith. He'd had a good day and had stopped at the Cross Keys in Carleton and had a few drinks. Despite the landlord offering him a bed for the night, he set off to walk the last couple of miles home. The following day his savagely-beaten body was found at a nearby crossroads. His money had been stolen. Those investigating the murder had two suspects - one fled to Yorkshire and the other was Thomas Nicholson who was Parker's godson. Witnesses had seen Parker spending lavishly. Nicholson was tried at Carlisle and sentenced to be hung and gibbeted near where the murder had taken place. This happened on August 31 1767. Until the 1820's the letters TPM could be read cut into the turf. It is said that this means Thomas Parker Murdered.
The other man suspect, Lee, turned up in Leeds and was later hanged in York for other crimes. Before his execution he confessed to his part in Parker's murder.

The popular location for our ghostly apparition is the Beacon at Beacon Hill; the Beacon itself is a small sandstone tower which would have been there in Nicholson’s time. But the Beacon is no gallows: it was where, for many centuries2, fires were lit to signal that danger approached. It was heavily used when Penrith and the Eden Valley suffered regular attacks from marauding Scottish reivers.
The actual site of Nicholson’s execution was on an eastward spur of Beacon Hill, near Cowdraik Quarry. This piece of high ground, which is now very popular with climbers, would have been clearly visible from the Cross Keys Pub and the site of Thomas Parker’s murder
Nicholson was not the only man to be executed on the hill. Twenty years before Parker’s murder; seven Jacobites caught fleeing back to Scotland were hung, drawn, and quartered here in 1746. I’ve been unable to find out the exact site of these executions, but it will not have been the same bit of the hill as Nicholson, as records make it clear that his execution site was chosen specifically because it was the nearest high ground visible from the site of the murder. On the same principle, perhaps the Jacobites met their deaths close to the Beacon that had been lit the year before to warn of their arrival, in full sight of the threatened Penrithians in the town below.
So, is the famous ghost near the Beacon on Beacon Hill one of the executed Jacobites? Perhaps the identity is not as important as the fact that the hill has seen quite a number of horrible deaths. That’s the reason that, even now, locals sometimes refer to it as ‘Gallows Hill’.

Penrith is a town in Cumbria’s Eden Valley, England. It’s known for the massive 14th-century Penrith Castle, set on a grassy meadow. Nearby, the Penrith Museum houses Roman pottery and objects reflecting local history. To the north is Beacon Hill, with its Penrith Beacon monument and panoramic views. South of town are the Norman Brougham Castle and the prehistoric monument of Mayburgh Henge.
Penrith is a market town and civil parish in the county of Cumbria, England. Penrith lies less than 3 miles (5 km) outside the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. Historically a part of Cumberland, Penrith's local authority is currently Eden District Council, which is based in the town. Penrith was formerly the seat of both Penrith Urban and Rural District Councils. From 1974 to 2015, Penrith had no town council of its own, and was an unparished area. Penrith Town Council was formed in 2015 and the first elections to the Town Council Civil parish took place on May 7, 2015.
The main church is St. Andrew's, built from 1720 to 1722 in an imposing Grecian style, abutting an earlier 13th-century tower. The churchyard has some ancient crosses and hogback tombstones in it known now as Giant's Grave, and Giant's Thumb which is the remains of a Norse cross dated to 920 AD. The ruins of Penrith Castle (14th-16th centuries) can be seen from the adjacent railway station. The castle is run as a visitor attraction by English Heritage. To the south-east of the town are the more substantial ruins of Brougham Castle, also under the protection of English Heritage. To the south of the town are the ancient henge sites known as Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table. Both are under the protection of English Heritage.
In the centre of the town is the Clock Tower, erected in 1861 to commemorate Philip Musgrave of Edenhall. Hutton Hall, in Friargate preserves a 14th-century pele tower at the rear, attached to an 18th-century building. Dockray Hall (formerly the Gloucester Arms) is said to date from c1470 and may incorporate the remains of another pele tower. Penrith has been noted for the number of wells in and around the town, and well-dressing ceremonies were commonplace on certain days in the month of May. Three miles south-east of the town, on the River Eamont are the Giants' caves, where the well was dedicated to St. Ninian. The caves are enlarged out of Lower Permian sandstones and their associated breccias and purple shales.
Just to the north of the town is the wooded signal-beacon hill, naturally named Beacon Hill, but originally called Penrith Fell. It last use was probably in 1804 in the war against Napoleon. Traditionally, the Beacon Pike was used to warn of approaching danger from Scotland. Today, although surrounded by a commercial woodland owned by Lowther Estates, the hill still contains some natural woodlands and is a popular local and tourist attraction. On a clear day the majority of the Eden Valley, the local fells, Pennines and parts of the North Lakes can be seen. It is almost certain that the Beacon Hill gave Penrith its name - in Celtic - of red hill. A fibreglass 550 cm (18 ft)-tall statue of King Kong once stood in the Skirsgill Auction Mart.

Penrith Christmas procession (England)
