Royal Troon Golf Club, Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland
Royal Troon Golf Club, Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland - Host of the 145th British Open in 2016, first hosted the Open in 1923. Found five miles north of Prestwick on Scotland’s west coast, the club was founded in 1878. In 1978 it was the last club in Great Britain to be granted Royal status. It’s a traditional out and back links layout opening with a relatively relaxing series of short par fours along the Firth of Clyde where a clear day will reveal Ailsa Craig to the south and majestic mountains on the Isle of Arran to the west. Good rounds are typically born on the outbound loop as the prevailing north-westerly wind can make the return extremely difficult. Troon lays claim to both the longest and the shortest holes in Open Championship golf – the “Postage Stamp” No. 8 at 123 yards and “Turnberry” No. 6 at 601 yards. Impressive history was made in the 1973 Open when Gene Sarazen at the age of 71 aced No. 8 then holed his sand shot the following day for a 2! It was quite a conclusion to The Squire’s Open career given he had played in Troon’s inaugural championship in 1923.

Places to see in ( Ayr - UK )
Ayr is a large town and former Royal Burgh situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire Council area and historic county town of Ayrshire. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and is the 12th most populous settlement in Scotland. The town adjoins the smaller town of Prestwick to the north, forming a single continuous urban area with the town.
Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205, serving as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the Medieval Period and remaining a well-renowned port across the Early Modern Period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sits the ramparts of a Citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell during the mid-17th Century. Towards the south of the town is the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the suburb of Alloway. With the expansion of the railway during the 19th Century Ayr soon developed into a seaside resort. This remains the case today with tourism occupying a significant sect of the local economy in Ayr through the opening of a Butlin's holiday park on the southern headlands of the town and through the continued presence of the Gaiety Theatre, which ran various shows across the late 20th century attracting performers from across the United Kingdom.
Politically, Ayr is considerably more Conservative-voting than the remainder of Scotland, being represented by a Conservative MP continuously for a period of 91 years – from 1906 (as part of the Ayr Burghs constituency) until 1997. The town forms part of the Ayr constituency in the Scottish Parliament, the first Conservative constituency seat in the Parliament, which has been represented by Conservative MSP John Scott since a by-election in 2000. In the UK Parliament Ayr is situated within the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency.
Ayr is one of the largest retail centres along the south of Scotland and was recognised as the second healthiest town centre in the United Kingdom by the Royal Society for Public Health in 2014. Ayr has hosted the Scottish Grand National horse-racing steeplechase annually since 1965. The town also accommodates the headquarters of the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post newspapers and the West FM radio station.
The Ayr railway station has regular services to Glasgow Central station, Edinburgh Waverley, Stranraer, Girvan and Kilmarnock]. All services are operated by Abellio ScotRail. The town is served by the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport just 2 miles (3 km) north from Ayr, which offers regional and domestic air services across Europe and the British Isles. Ayr is served by three major motorway systems.

Prestwick Golf Club, South Ayrshire, Scotland
Prestwick Golf Club, South Ayrshire, Scotland - Prestwick Golf Club was founded in 1851 and lies adjacent to Royal Troon along a stretch of Scotland’s Ayrshire coastline that is as famous as any in the world for the game. Prestwick, the Birthplace of the Open Championship, attracts golfers from around the world to play its historic Links. It was here in 1860 when Willie Park won the first Open Championship…finishing two shots ahead of Old Tom Morris. Prestwick would go on to host 24 Open Championships (the last in 1925) plus 11 Amateur Championships, the most recent in 2001. Today, Prestwick is a thrilling 6,908 yard par 71 throwback from the championship tees. It stands tall for all who believe that the essence of golf has and always will be how the ball reacts along the ground. Typical of the original golfing terrain known for producing awkward stances on undulating fairways, Prestwick provides a taste of golf as it was played long ago. The holes now in play still include six of Old Tom's original greens. Especially memorable holes include the 230 yard blind par 3 fifth, the steeply pitched back to front green at the eighth, and the wicked left to right side slope at the ninth green. Occupying a unique niche in golfing history, there are few places like it in the world of golf. Make sure you take time to explore the clubhouse and prepare to be amazed. A must play for any discerning enthusiast of the game, Prestwick is golf royalty.

Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland
Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland - Located in North Ayrshire about 10 minutes from Troon, Western Gailes is considered by many as the hidden gem of Scottish links. Dating back to 1897, the club provides a combination of the traditional and modern style links. Contours of the land coupled with severely placed bunkers make it a fair but challenging links. Relying on natural defenses created by the sand dunes and wind, Western Gailes runs in a loop with its toughest stretch along the banks of the dunes that generally plays into the prevailing wind. It comes as no surprise that professional and amateur golfers alike continue to travel from all corners of the world to play this enjoyable links course.
Western Gailes has hosted many notable tournaments over the years which include serving as a final qualifying venue of The Open at Royal Troon and Turnberry, along with the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships. In addition to the course, the Clubhouse is reason for a visit as it sits above the links with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and beyond…making Western Gailes an experience you’ll never forget.

Double Decker Passenger Buses Bridgend Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Double Decker passenger buses driving through Bridgend in Perth, Perthshire. Double decker buses are in common use throughout the United Kingdom, and have been favoured over articulated buses by many operators because of the shorter length of double deckers and larger amount of seating capacity; they also may be safer to operate through the narrow streets and tight corners common in Britain. Motorists using the A85, A93 and A94 roads at Bridgend in Perth regularly face hold-ups as traffic pours into Perth and the surrounding streets.

Ailsa Championship Course, Trump Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland
Ailsa Championship Course, Trump Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland - The Championship Ailsa Course at Trump Turnberry Resort is found on Scotland's west coast 25 miles south of Royal Troon. Designer Mackenzie Ross is credited with restoring the course to championship standards when it re opened in 1951 after World War II when the property was converted to an RAF airfield and hospital. Today the layout is a fixture among the best 25 courses in the world. Ailsa has staged The Open Championship on four occasions beginning in 1977 with the legendary showdown between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus remembered as the Duel in the Sun. Watson's weekend of 65-65 clipped Nicklaus' 65-66. They both birdied 18 on Sunday; Nicklaus from 40 feet, Watson from 3! No. 9 “Bruce’s Castle” is Ailsa’s trademark hole played from the shadow of Turnberry’s landmark lighthouse. Extensive renovations planned for the course include converting No. 9 from a 452 yard par four to a 235 yard par 3.
See our blog post about the changes at PerryGolf.com/Ailsa.
