Exploring the Delights of Burton Mill Pond in West Sussex
Julia Hartley and I are taking an enthusiastic stroll around the picturesque Burton Mill Pond, a holding pond for the once productive mill of the same name in the Burton Park Estate.
Passing from the old lodge house, we find evidence of its former glory in a delightful avenue of ancient and colossal sweet chestnut trees.
The pond is just south of Petworth and close to the village of Duncton. It is also part of Burton Park Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated nationally important for its wetland habitats, rare plants, birdlife, and invertebrate populations. Chingford Pond is designated a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI).

Trip to Burgess Hill
Sunday afternoon trip to Burgess Hill from Ardingly in 3.5 mins.
St Margaret's Church, Ifield, West Sussex
St Margaret's Church is an Anglican church in the Ifield neighbourhood of Crawley, a town and borough in West Sussex, England. It is the ancient parish church of; the medieval settlement of the village of Ifield.
The present building incorporates the chancel from a 13th-century church which may have replaced a wooden building of two or three centuries earlier. Additions in the 14th century included stone effigies representing a knight and his wife, considered to be excellent examples of such sculptures. More structural changes took place at regular intervals, and a major Victorian restoration by architect Somers Clarke included an extension to the nave and a new tower. English Heritage has listed the church at Grade I because of its architectural and historical importance.
The churchyard has many old tombs and monuments, including writer Mark Lemon's grave and an elaborately decorated table tomb, which is listed separately by English Heritage at Grade II. Further memorials adorn the interior walls. Internal fixtures include a 12th-century font with unusual decorative carvings.

Rutledge Estates
So the story goes that the Rutledge family's Great-Great Grandfather, Elijah Byrd Rutledge settled in the Union Hill Community in Sumner County. Union Hill Community got its name from the Union Soldiers camping out in the area during the Civil War. Elijah Byrd Rutledge built a large, one pen, two story log house. During the Civil War at least one Union Soldier slept on the front porch. John Rutledge the son of Elijah Byrd added on to the home in three of the possible directions. The home burned in the 1950's exposing the gun ports in the logs for protecting the homestead. John Rutledge greatly expanded the Rutledge Holdings.
The Rutledges were strong members of the Union Hill Community. John's son Arthur Rutledge, Sr. was a minister and gave the land to the Union Hill Church of Christ where the church stands now. Across the road was the Union Hill School which was a two room school consisting of grades one through eight where Arthur's wife Betty Rutledge taught all eight grades.
Phosphate Lane was named as a result of phosphate mining in this area in the early 1900's. The rail line which connected to the L & N Railroad ran right through the Rutledge Estate and is still visible in some places. During the Second World War (WWII) U.S. soldiers from all over the United States came to train in Middle Tennessee because the forest and rolling hill was close to the same terrain as they would find in Europe. U.S. soldiers were having war game training in the Union Hill area and on the Rutledge farm. After the war was over many of the soldiers returned to Middle Tennessee, married and stayed to raise their families.
The Rutledge Family has taken great care to preserve the integrity of the land as Rutledge Estates was developed. From the beautiful hardwood trees, the creek and the particular attention to water drainage systems, the standards were set high. Restrictions were placed on the land to protect the distinguished character of the land and to provide a platform where homeowners take great pride in their property. A noble salute to their ancestors!
The Rutledges described the area as a quiet, stable community where neighbors still help each other out. They take pride in their neighborhood and community. For the most part the surrounding neighbors are agricultural. The views of the plush green Tennessee rolling hills are both inspiring and soothing!

Whilst this clip does show a nice fish caught to order, in front of the fishery owner, Angler's Mail does obviously not condone fishing without having an unhooking mat to hand.

During the summer holiday, Wayne Weller, Archaeologist for Surrey County Archaeological Unit, undertook soil sampling and an archaeological dig, in preparation for the building of the new classrooms, dining hall and sports hall. Evidence of an ancient river bed was found in the soil samples and a flint which appeared to be a bronze-age tool, used possibly for hide-working or woodwork.
