Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) The nine Locks of Fonseranes
Fonserannes Locks (French: écluses de Fonserannes, les neuf écluses) are staircase locks on the Canal du Midi near Béziers. It consists of eight ovoid lock chambers (characteristic of the Canal du Midi) and nine gates, which allow boats to be raised a height of 21.5 m, in a distance of 300 m. Whilst the flight was built as an 8-rise, to allow boats to cross the River Orb on a level, rejoining the canal a little further downstream, the crossing of the Orb was long ago replaced by an aqueduct.
Boats now enter and exit the lower end of the flight through the side of chamber seven, which is maintained at its upper level, and it is operated as a 6-rise. The eighth chambers, which lock down into the Orb, is now disused. The side exit from chamber seven causes some confusion in describing the chain of locks. While most sources now ignore the disused eighth chamber in describing the flight, many sources still describe it as a 7-rise, despite the fact that chamber seven is operated at a fixed level.
Traditional buildings such as the stables and the lock keeper's house still remain. These and the locks have made the Fonserannes Lock the third most popular tourist destination in Languedoc-Roussillon, after the Pont du Gard and the town of Carcassonne. In 1983 an inclined plane was built for boats too large for these locks to bypass them, but the project encountered severe technical problems and was abandoned in 2001 (see Fonserannes water slope).
Though Pierre-Paul Riquet rightly receives so much credit and acknowledgement for the creation of the Canal du Midi, we may forget that many individual parts of the canal were built by subcontractors other than Riquet. The subcontractors for these locks were two illiterate brothers, Michel and Pierre Medailhes. Many of the workers were women.

The Canal du Midi
The 300 year old Canal du Midi skirts the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean before meandering inland through ancient villages, Roman fortifications and famed vineyards. This canal is defined by its beauty, lined with plane trees and crossed by pretty arched bridges. The Mediterranean weather and pace of life is relaxed and lulls you into unwinding as you cruise sedately along.
This is the perfect place for cycling or walking along scenic tow paths, or simply watching the scenery pass by as you relax on deck with a cool drink. In the distance you can see the Pyrenees, whereas closer to hand are the vineyards that stretch for thousands of square miles. Enjoy private wine tastings at chateaux en route, locations that vary with your choice of barge.
You will discover a marvellous blend of ancient Gallo-Roman and traditional influences reflected throughout this region of historical importance. Explore this further with your tour guide when you visit the walled city of Carcassonne, the most complete medieval fortified city in existence.
Our Hotel Barges
Our classic Canal du Midi cruise is aboard our pretty 8 passenger vessel Anjodi, which has been cruising the Canal du Midi for more than 25 years. Anjodi has never been more popular since Rick Stein brought her to the attention of the world in his very successful TV series 'French Odyssey'.
Our ultra deluxe Canal du Midi cruise is aboard the 8 passenger Enchanté. This is the only double-decker hotel barge on the Canal du Midi, providing room for large cabins and additional facilities whilst still able to squeeze through the waterway's old locks.
We also offer the 10 passenger Athos for larger groups.

Ascent of Les 9 Écluses de Fonseranes in 5 minutes - Canal du Midi, Bezier, France
One of the highlights of canal boating on the Canal du Midi in the south of France is the ascent (or descent) of the 9 Écluses de Fonseranes in Bezier - 8 connected locks with 9 gates - a spectacular ascent or descent.
I was filming on my Canon G7X MkII (with my car cam as as backup) - unfortunately a strong gust of wind toppled the camera which promtly fell into one of the locks, never to be seen again :(, so the car cam footage was all that I retained.

The Neuf Écluses de Fonserannes
The journey through the nine locks of Fonserannes at Béziers. This video has not been changed in length in any way, this is the actual time it takes to rise the nine (six in reality!) locks. Number 7 is the basin from which you enter number 6. Number 8 has been firmly nailed shut for many years and leads only to an old section of canal now used for waste and stolen cars. Number 9 is still there, this was the entry from the canal onto the river Orb, the canal is heavily overgrown and neglected, and now the town council have built a bridge of metal grill across, very atheistically sympathetic. So, when you read 9, think 6, and remember it takes a good half hour to navigate.

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Villeneuve les Beziers
Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Villeneuve les Beziers
Whether you are in a boat, on a bicycle or in your car, Villeneuve les Beziers is an essential step on the course of the Canal du Midi. Stop by and discover the homeland of the Occitan poet Jean Lauris.
Villeneuve les Beziers was originally a Roman settlement, but its true identity begins at the time of Charlemagne. Destroyed by fire in the Middle Ages, it was known as the Crémade Villeneuve until 1631, when it took its current name. A chateau was once home to the family members of the local feudal lord. It was destroyed in 1925 and now lays in ruins, although one of its towers has recently been renovated.
You will also find a Romanesque church from the eleventh century, whose apse and bell tower house two bells named Bernadette and Roseline which are listed historical monuments. The Canal du Midi (World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO) and the eighteenth century canal lock are part of the heritage of the town.
