Visiting Leigh-on-Sea
Leigh-on-Sea, which is also referred to as simply Leigh, is a district of Southend-on-Sea in the south of the county of Essex. The town itself lies on the northern side of the River Thames estuary, and although close to the open North Sea, it is still only 40 miles from Central London.
Archeologists have fouynd evidence of settlements during the Roman era, and the area has been settled ever since. With a maritime, fishing and agricultural background, Leigh-on-Sea is better known now as a suburb of Southend-on-Sea although it is still a charming place to visit with its waterfront, lovely High Street and the St Clements Church. Tidal cockle paths are best short walks in Essex
Tidal, cockle paths at Leigh are among the shortest walks in Essex, and they link to The Saffron Trail, one of longest hikes. Watch video and visit my website for more details
Plenty has been written about The Broomway walk, the pre-historic, tidal path a few miles east of Leigh, off Shoebury. Much less is known about the shorter, ancient stone paths that emerge off Leigh and Chalkwell at low tide. And that's a shame. Because they offer some of the most scenic walks in Essex. And the swim at the end, on a hot day, is pretty special too.
On warm summer days, locals can be seen strolling out to Leigh Creek and The Ray for a dip. Potentially hazardous tides put some people off. Many more just don't know the cockle paths are there.
If you're going to try one of the most remarkable walks in Essex, don't go alone. Please seek advice on the day, as tides change. Ideally speak to local swimmers, or else find an Essex walking group that can help.

Boat trip on the river Medway & Thames to the Red Sands forts - Saturday 25th May 2019
Mrs ba14eagle and I, along with a couple of friends, had been looking forward to this trip for ages.
Jetstream Tours operate ferrys and boat tours from Rochester, Chatham and Southend. Our trip to the Red Sands forts started at 8:30 Saturday morning, from the pier in beautiful Rochester. As we found out later in the day, this place is definitely worth a wander around - especially the cathedral.
Back to the boat tour. We didnt know when booking, but we were in for an additional treat - the Medway sailing barge match was also taking place. This is 1 race in a series that take place through the year, where preserved Thames sailing barges race around different parts of the South East of England.
Sailing out of Rochester we pass many ancient fortifications, built to defend from invaders, who may have tried to make their way up the river Medway. Chatham historic naval dockyard, the various industrial facilities on the Isle of Grain and Sheerness docks.
Shortly after Sheerness, we pass by the wreck of the American liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery, lost, with most of its cargo, during a storm in 1944. The wreck has an exclusion zone around it and under constant surveillance, due to potential instability of the cargo.
We then catch up with the tail enders in the barge match and a short time later, the leaders turning back from the Medway No.1 buoy - the halfway mark in the race.
After the barges, we come to the highlight of the trip - The Red Sands forts.
The 7 forts formed 1 of 3 groups, built in the Thames estuary during World war 2, to provide defence to London. Only 2 groups remain - Red Sands and Shivering Sands. The 3rd, Nore was removed because it was a hazard to shipping in the estuary.
The Red Sands forts are home to Peregrine Falcons - they briefly appear in the footage.
On the way back to Rochester we again pass the SS Richard Montgomery - closer this time - and the barge match.
A thoroughly enjoyable trip which we all enjoyed.
I hope you enjoy the video. Please feel free to like, comment and share. best wishes, Iain

Thirty miles from central London, the River Thames widens into a great estuary on its way to the North Sea. Mud, marsh and water blend into one. This often seems like a barren and bleak landscape.
