Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European city in the Americas. The old city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic, and it prides itself in being the first European city in the New World. Founded by Christopher Columbus's brother Bartolome Colombus in 1496, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial empire in the New World. For this reason, the city of Santo Domingo has a really rich historic and cultural heritage that makes any visit extremely worthwhile. Nowadays, it remains one of the most populous cities in the Central America-Caribbean area, and the main economic and commercial center of this region. The city is divided into two parts by the Ozama River. The western side is very developed economically, while the eastern part, known as Santo Domingo Este, has historically lagged behind.

The most important tourist destination of the city is the Zona Colonial or Colonial Zone, on the western bank of the river and facing the Caribbean Sea. To the west of the Zona Colonial lies Gazcue, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with old Victorian houses and tree-lined streets. The city's waterfront George Washington Avenue, knows as El Malecon, borders the Caribbean Sea and attracts many tourists because of its hotels, casinos, palm-lined boulevards and monuments. Surrounding the Gazcue area you will find the Palacio Nacional (seat of the Dominican government), the National Theater, the Museums in the Plaza de la Cultura, and the Palace of Fine Arts.

In the central part of western Santo Domingo lies the economic and commercial heart of the city, in an area known as the Poligono Central and delimited by the 27 de Febrero, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill and Maximo Gomez avenues. This high-income area remains rather unexplored by tourists, despite offering most of the best dining and shopping available in the city. Many of the city's most affluent neighborhoods surround the city's two main parks, the Parque Mirador Sur in the South and the Jardin Botanico in the North.

In the less developed Oriental Santo Domingo you will find other major monuments and tourist spots, such as Columbus's Lighthouse, where the explorer's remains are buried, the open caves of the Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, and the National Aquarium. This all makes of Santo Domingo a cosmopolitan, vibrant and bustling city with very distinct neighborhoods and ambiances, all worth a visit, and providing the most diverse cultural experiences.

Santo Domingo was, until recently, a huge city (pop. nearly 4 million people) that was split into 5 independent municipalities: Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo Este, Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte and Boca Chica. Fortunately, nearly all tourist attractions and shopping, dining and entertainment venues are located relatively close to each other in the Distrito Nacional, making it easy for you to get around and see the sights.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Caribbean, North America

Santo Domingo, known officially as Santo Domingo de Guzmán, is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic. Its metropolitan population reached 2,907,100 in 2010, excluding rural population. The city is located on the Caribbean Sea, at the mouth of the Ozama River. Founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, on the east bank of the Ozama River and then moved by Nicolás de Ovando in 1502 to the west bank of the river, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and was the first seat of Spanish colonial rule in the New World. It lies within the boundaries of the Distrito Nacional, itself bordered on three sides by Santo Domingo Province. Santo Domingo is the site of the first university, cathedral, castle, monastery, and fortress in the New World, the city's Colonial Zone, was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Santo Domingo was called Ciudad Trujillo, from 1936 to 1961, after the Dominican Republic's dictator, Rafael Trujillo, named the capital after himself. Following his assassination, the city resumed its original designation. Today, Santo Domingo is the Dominican Republic's major metropolis and is the largest city in the Caribbean by population. The Ozama river flows 148 kilometres (92 miles) before emptying into the Caribbean Sea. Santo Domingo's position on its banks was of great importance to the city's economic development and the growth of trade during colonial times. The Ozama River is where the country's busiest port is located. The average temperature in Santo Domingo varies little, because the tropical trade winds help mitigate the heat and humidity throughout the year. Thanks to these trade winds, Santo Domingo has a tropical climate but seldom experiences the oppressive heat and humidity that one may expect to find. December and January are the coolest months and July and August are the warmest. Santo Domingo averages 1,445 millimetres (56.9 in) of rain annually. Its driest months are from January through April, however, due to the trade winds and mountains to the southwest, rain is seen even during these months. Because its driest month is just below 60 millimetres (2.4 in), Santo Domingo falls under the tropical monsoon climate category under the Köppen climate classification. Like many other cities in the Caribbean, Santo Domingo is very susceptible to hurricanes. The lowest recorded temperature has been 6.0 °C (42.8 °F) and the highest 39.5 °C (103.1 °F). Many of Santo Domingo's most notable landmarks are located within the Zona Colonial district of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. The Colonial Zone, bordered by the Río Ozama, also has an impressive collection of 16th century buildings, including palatial houses and majestic churches that reflect the architectural style of the late medieval period. The city's most important colonial buildings include the Catedral Santa María La Menor, called La Catedral Primada de América, America's First Cathedral, which states its distinction; the Alcázar de Colón, America's first castle, once the residence of Viceroy of the Indies Don Diego Colón, a son of Christopher Columbus; the Monasterio de San Francisco, the ruins of the first monastery in the Americas; the Museo de las Casas Reales, in a monumental complex that includes the former Palace of the Governors and the building of the former Royal Audiencia of Santo Domingo; the Fortaleza Ozama, the oldest fortress in the Americas; the Pantéon Nacional, a former Jesuit edifice now hosting the remains of various renowned Dominicans; and the Dominican Convent, the first convent in the Americas. Just outside the fortifications's Puerta del Conde is the Altar de la Patria, erected in 1976 as a monument to the heroes of the country's independence in 1844. Outside of the Ciudad Colonial, the Malecón (seawall) is a vibrant commercial and touristic area, marked by major hotels and several Trujillo-era monuments including a large obelisk located at the eastern end of George Washington Avenue. Other places of cultural interest are Plaza de la Cultura, which houses the city's most important cultural venues, including the Teatro Nacional (National Theater) and various museums; the Palacio Nacional, which houses the Presidency of the Dominican Republic; the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts), a neoclassical building that is the permanent home of the country's National Symphony Orchestra; and the Boulevard 27 de Febrero, a pedestrian promenade located on the busy Avenida 27 de Febrero, which displays works of art from prominent Dominican artists and sculptors. Another attraction is the Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte, a sports complex in the center of Santo Domingo. This complex was used during the 2003 Pan American Games. Santo Domingo is the location of numerous museums, many of which are located in the Zona Colonial district.

With live music, real-time video and voice, Cuban choreographer Marianela Boán presents the passionate, powerful False Testimony. In this exploration of life in the post-technological era, what is the emotional link between humans? A videographer and musician use their respective tools -- a camera and cello -- to experiment on two dancers, controlling and checking their reactions. Boxes are used as cubic video screens, producing a magical mixture of real and virtual bodies. Is it possible to look behind and untangle the projection screen or are we all deceived by illusion? A recent Philadelphia transplant, Marianela Boán has been recognized as an icon in Cuba's dance vanguard for over 20 years

MARIANELA BOAN
Is an Internationally known choreographer, recognized as one of the most important artists of contemporary Cuban dance. She is considered a leader of the Hispanic-American dance vanguard. Her revolutionary style Contaminated Dance radically merges all the arts in dance performance to produce an original form. As choreographer, dancer and professor Boán has worked in more than 40 countries around the world and created more than 50 choreographies.
She is now working in Philadelphia, USA, where she teaches at Temple University after earning her master's degree, founded her new company BoanDanz Action and open BoanDanz Studio.
As a founder director of DanzAbierta and BoanDanz Action, she has been awarded numerous prizes in Cuba and abroad. Her new piece VOYEUR was premiered at Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, September 6 and 7, 2007 and performed at Bogotá, Colombia, National University, November 22, 2007.
False Testimony (2006) has been successfully performed at la MaMa Experimental Theater in New York, Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Bates Dance Festival (2007) and will be performed at Annenberg Center (By Local Festival, Philadelphia) and Casa de Teatro, Dominican Republic (2008) among other venues.
Chorus Perpetuus, the last piece she created for DanzAbierta (Cuba, 2001) have been touring for five years all over the world. In year, 2006 was performed at Reims Festival, France and Sziget Festival, Hungary.
With BoanDanz Action, she premiered five new works in year 2005: Map (Conwell Theater), Fluid (Painted Bride Art Center), Quiereme Mucho (Mexico City), Eighth Commandment (Germany, Oldenburg).
Her work has been presented at diverse venues and festivals including Grec, Madrid en Danza, Cadiz and Fall in Spain, The Place Theater in London, Festival of Nations in Switzerland, Chaillot Theater in Paris, Le Hague Festival in Holland, Cirque Royal de la Monnaie in Belgium, L'Arena de Verona and Goldoni Theater in Venetia, Italy, Global Dance and Summer Theater in Germany, Fringe Edinburgh and Glasgow Festivals, Scotland, Odin Theater in Denmark and the most important venues in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, India, Nigeria and Japan. She has been a Titular Professor at the High Institute of Arts in Cuba (ISA) and has contributed to the education of several generations of Cuban and Latin American dancers.
Since year 2000 she have developed an intense work in USA as a guest artist, choreographer and performer with her solos Blanche Dubois, Fast Food, Seagull and Lifting and teaching composition, creative process, improvisation, Choreographic Project, Repertory, Dance technique, and Movement for actors and visual artists.
She has created works for companies and institutions including the American Dance Festival (2000), Bates Dance Festival (2001, 2003 and 2004), NYU Politic and Performance Hemispheric Encuentro (2001 in Mexico, 2002 in Peru, 2003 in NYC), Barnard College, Columbia University (2001, 2002, 2003), Anchorage Alaska University Ensemble, Alfred College, Wake Forest University, Florida International University, Asheville Dance Theater Company and FITLA Los Angeles. In 2003 she taught a semester of Contaminated Dance in NYU Performance Studies Department.

Inauguración de 4 salas cine en San Juan de la Maguana, Caribbean Cinemas

La magia del cine llegó a San Juan de la Maguana de la mano del grupo Caribbean Cinemas, quienes, en presencia de los principales ejecutivos de la marca, la alcaldesa del municipio, allegados a la industria del cine y amigos de la prensa, dejaron formalmente inaugurado su nuevo cine este miércoles 4 de julio en la Plaza Comercial y Cultural San Juan.

El cine que lleva por nombre Caribbean Cinemas San Juan de la Maguana, ubicado en la Plaza Comercial y Cultural San Juan, cuenta con cuatro modernas salas tipo estadio con cómodas butacas altas, proyección 100% digital HD, sonido Bolby de última generación, área de Candy Bar con variedad de dulces, bebidas y productos.

En el acto inaugural con el tradicional corte de cinta, estuvo encabezado por el presidente de Caribbean Cinemas, Sr. Robert Carrady, quien se hizo acompañar de Yvette Marichal, directora de la Dirección General de Cine, Michael Carrady, Zumaya Cordero y la Alcaldesa de San Juan de la Maguana Hanoi Sánchez, quien tuvo la iniciativa y visión de tener un cine en esta ciudad para complementar el entretenimiento de los munícipes.

Durante la ceremonia el Sr. Carrady se dirigió a los presentes y expresó: “Para nuestra empresa es una gran satisfacción traer el sano entretenimiento no solo a San Juan sino a toda la región sur, de igual forma aportar al crecimiento económico y cultural de esta ciudad con un cine que cuenta con todas las facilidades que caracteriza nuestra cadena Caribbean Cinemas, no tengo la menor duda de que todo San Jun apoyará nuestra iniciativa disfrutando en familia de las mejores películas en un ambiente confortable. Esta apertura confirma nuestro interés en seguir aportando al desarrollo de la industria del cine y del entretenimiento, sin importar las distancias.   De igual forma, quiero nuevamente agradecer a Hanoi  por su visión y compromiso en el desarrollo cultural de su ciudad y por permitirnos ser parte de este gran logro.

Hoy la industria cinematográfica dominicana asciende otro peldaño.  A partir de hoy, la zona Sur, San Juan de la Maguana,  cuenta con un espacio que brinda acceso al entretenimiento, al fomento de la cultura – visto el séptimo arte como medio forjador de la identidad nacional-, a la educación y otras áreas del saber, la creación de nuevos públicos, al impulso de la economía, la generación de nuevas fuentes de trabajo.

SOBRE LA OBRA
En un pequeño salón, el frenético tecleo de una máquina de escribir, se enzarza a diario con las notas de un violonchelo. Son André y Dorine, una pareja de ancianos que, como tantas otras, ha caido en la desidia, olvidando así lo que un día los unió. De las paredes cuelga el pasado enmarcado, como único testimonio de lo que compartieron. Pero un suceso, la enfermedad, será la encargada de sacudir el polvo de su relación, obligándoles a recordar quiénes fueron, para reencontrarse con quienes son. Recordar cómo han amado, para seguir amando.

SOBRE LA COMPAÑÍA
La compañía Kulunka Teatro se crea en 2010, en Euskadi, por Garbiñe Insausti y José Dault, jóvenes pero experimentados artistas de extensa trayectoria teatral. Dicho conjunto nace de la inquietud de sus integrantes por experimentar con diferentes lenguajes escénicos. Todo ello, sin olvidar la idea de hacer un teatro accesible para el público. Un teatro vital, actual, comprometido y conectado con la realidad.
En nuestro intento por crear un espectáculo sin fronteras, nuestra voluntad fue la de descubrir un lenguaje que trascendiera más allá de la palabra. Un lenguaje capaz de emocionar y divertir. Para ello, nos apoyamos fundamentalmente en un teatro de gesto, en el que la MÁSCARA actúa como puente hacia una poética visual. Ellas abren las puertas del imaginario hacia un mundo en el que todo es posible.

GFDD Dominican Get-togethers in the Big Apple - The Republic of Baseball (Guest Presentation)

Despite the torrential rain, Saturday´s premiere of Dominican Get-Togethers in the Big Apple was a smashing success. People, young and old, from all over the city, including New Jersey, streamed into School of Visual Arts where they rubbed shoulders with several of professional baseball´s most legendary players. The event was organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).

As the lobby of the Manhattan art school filled up and the sound of excited children's voices pierced the air, Tony Peña slipped in and an immediate circle formed around the former Major League catcher and current New York Yankees coach.

Once the action moved from the lobby to the packed Beatrice Theater in preparation to see the film, The Republic of Baseball: Dominican Giants of the American Game, a look at the race and cultural challenges faced by the Dominican pioneers of pro ball in the US, GFDD Executive Director Natasha Despotovic introduced the evening's program and special guests which included the film's director, Daniel Manatt; author and producer Rob Ruck, upon whose book Manatt's film was based; Yankees infielder Eduardo Núñez; Tony Peña and Ricardo Ramon, Deputy Minister of the Dominican Consulate in New York and official in the Dominican Sports Ministry.

In a question and answer period prior to the film screening, one young boy timidly approached the microphone and asked Tony Peña, How did you learn to play so well?

Peña took the opportunity to express his feelings about baseball in relation to the Dominican Republic which happens to produce the most professional baseball players per capita than any other country in the world -- fully 10% of the Major League is comprised of Dominicans and 30% of the Minors, with a total of more than 200 peloteros playing in the Major Leagues.

As stressed by Executive Director, Ms. Despotovic, the subject for this first Dominican Get-Together couldn't be more appropriate to reach the hearts and minds of Dominicans in the Diaspora other than baseball -- a Dominican passion and pasttime, and, as Dominican businessman and community activist Rudy Fuertes put it, ¨part of our DNA.¨

While Peña was honest about the possibilities and challenges of becoming professional among his country's thousands of talented players, he could not be more emphatic about the importance of education and remaining centered in relation to one's country and family.

We want our children not to be afraid to realize their dreams of baseball but if education does not go hand-in-hand with that process, then we as adults have failed to set the right example and have not taught them the important things in life, said Peña, a native of Monte Cristi.

At one point of the discussion, all our guests agreed on the dreadful threat affecting young would-be peloteros who often fall prey of unscrupulous so called scouts or buscones who take advantage of their high hopes, abilities, and lack of information.

Ricardo Ramon of the Dominican Consulate in New York seconded that idea saying that Dominicans, more than ever, need to protect their young athletes. He talked about the Orientation, Sports and Education (ODE in Spanish) program which seeks to keep young athletes in school while still pursuing their dreams of professional sports, both in New York and in the DR.

At one point, Tony Peña exhorted Dominican parents in the audience to take their children to visit the DR to feel their roots and to see the beauty of their country.

Indeed this is the purpose of the Dominican Get-Togethers in the Big Apple, to fulfill the GFDD's mission of facilitating and supporting collaboration, exchange, understanding and common ground among Dominicans who live in New York and its environs and those who live in the homeland.

Did the first Get-Together achieve that purpose?

This evening's event more than surpassed our expectations and we look forward to more of the same, said community activist and GFDD supporter, Cristina Cespín of Elmhurst, Queens.

Ms. Despotovic promised the audience that the GFDD will continue to reach out to the Dominican community in the New York Metro area and to make the Get-togethers an ongoing event to keep the conversations going among Dominicans here and at home.

Dominican Get-togethers in the Big Apple is part of GFDD's mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of the Dominican culture, values and heritage, and to create opportunities for discussions of contemporary issues relevant to the Dominican society in the homeland and abroad, GFDD reaches out to the Dominican community living the New York Metro Area and to all those interested in the Dominican culture by organizing ongoing events.
