Australia Day at the Theatre Royal Hobart
Australia Day at the Theatre Royal Hobart
Theatre Royal, Hobart
Dubbed by Noel Coward a dream of a theatre, the Theatre Royal has been operating continuously for 170 years, although it was also known as the Royal Victoria Theatre. Situated in the heart of Wapping, in those early days the audience came from the brothels, taverns and small cottages locally as well as from the more genteel areas of the town, so some of the drama took place in the auditorium as well as on the stage.
This video was researched written and prepared by TMAG volunteer Sally Rackham and narrated by Noreen Le Mottee.

Opera Australia's THE MAGIC FLUTE at the Theatre Royal
19 & 20 September
“One of Mozart’s most beloved operas”
LYNDON TERRACINI, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, OPERA AUSTRALIA
A quest for wisdom and true love.
Opera Australia presents a ripping yarn for all the family.
The ancient tombs of the Pharaohs hide many secrets. Will Tamino the daring archaeologist find them? Will it be Papageno, the zany ornithologist? Or will the forces of evil crack the code, find the treasure and get the girl?
Taking inspiration from the movies, director Michael Gow and designer Robert Kemp have set their new touring production of Mozart’s final work for the stage as a rollicking adventure in 1930s Egypt. There will be mummies, hieroglyphic puzzles and a good few laughs along the way, but is it opera? Mozart didn’t care, and nor should you. He was far more concerned with firing his audience’s imagination through the power of music. Which is why there is something for everyone here from the Queen of the Night’s demented showstoppers, to achingly beautiful arias, to simple ballads that wrap you up in warmth and charm.
Prepare to be enchanted, when this new, fully-staged production of The Magic Flute comes to Hobart, complete with fabulous 1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant young cast of singers.

After smashing the Box Office in Queensland, the Logie Award-Winning TV Show makes its Tasmanian Theatrical Premiere.
Written by Geoffrey Atherden, who also wrote the popular ABC TV series, Mother and Son is a classic Australian comedy about the relationship between divorced Arthur and his ageing, very eccentric mother, Maggie.
It's not the fact she's trying to feed the cat that died years ago, or storing the teapot in the fridge, it's just that she's driving him crazy! Vague but vicious, and more arsenic than old lace, Maggie would have Arthur tied to her apron strings, if she could just remember where she put the apron...
The actress playing Ruth Cracknells' Maggie is the real deal...and comb-over Lionel is the scene stealer. Radio 4BC Brisbane.
If you are a fan of the ABC TV series, then you will certainly enjoy this stage version. It's as close a copy of the original as you'll get. - Absolutetheatre.com.au
sometimes it is hard for the actors to continue their lines as the laughs are continuing so long. It is absolutely a must-see for those of you who remember Mother & Son fondly The Independent Newspaper.
Friday 15th @ 8pm and Saturday 16th July 2011 @ 2pm and 8pm.
