Robert Hardy & James Murray at the Theatre Royal Winchester
A film featuring James Murray chatting with Robert Hardy during rehearsals for ‘Robert Hardy Remembers Churchill’s Wilderness Years’ at the Theatre Royal Winchester. The New Theatre Royal, Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth (U.K.)
This historic theatre has had quite a history since first erected, & has been seriously damaged several times, & has had its useage changed from being a theatre to being a cinema, bingo hall & even a wrestling venue (with a fair number of closures inbetween) before being restored back to (almost) its former glory as a theatre again. It's thanks to the serious dedication of many people who've donated their time, money & enthusiasm that we can now appreciate it again. More work has to be carried out, but so much has been done so far, that even if there are patches of crumbled plaster, etc., that only adds to its charm. Try & visit the theatre if you can ...... you're sure to receive a genuine welcome as I was, when I asked if I could roam around with my camera. The theatre's closed for a couple of weeks during the period that I went, so the lighting was down to minimum levels (which is why some of the photography is not as sharp as it should be), but I hope that my photos show how well their work's progressed.
HatFair Winchester 2013 Day 00
Hat Fair is Britain's longest running festival of street theatre and outdoor arts -- taking place in Winchester in July every year.
Now in its 39th year, Hat Fair, named after the tradition of throwing donations into performance hats, first burst onto the Winchester scene in 1974 as a busker's festival. It has since developed a strong reputation and following, providing a a weekend filled with hundreds of colourful and exciting performances.
The festival has now joined forces with the city's 99 year old theatre, Theatre Royal Winchester to become a part of a creative enterprise at the cultural heart of Winchester.
War Of The Worlds in Winchester High Street...
In 1898 HG Wells published his landmark novel, The War Of The Worlds, one of the earliest books to detail a conflict between mankind and an alien race.
The book has been seen as many things; a commentary on evolutionary theory, a critique of British Imperialism and, at the time, a 'scientific romance'.... but never (at least until this production) a work of non-fiction...

'A Fruitful Season: Keats in Winchester' by Cecily O'Neill
John Keats is one of England’s best-loved poets. The beauty of his poems and his tragically short life make him an intensely romantic figure. A Fruitful Season: Keats in Winchester celebrates his visit to the city in the autumn of 1819. He and his friend Charles Armitage Brown found it: ‘The pleasantest town I was ever in.’
Drawn entirely from Keats’ letters and poems, the script includes his delightful descriptions of Winchester, an account of the writing of his most popular poem Ode to Autumn, and his obsessive love for his ‘Bright Star’ Fanny Brawne.
Keats’ months in Winchester mark his last great burst of poetic creativity, before the disease that killed his brother took hold. He died of consumption at the age of 25, believing that his work would soon be forgotten.
Writer Cecily O’Neill said: “I already knew and loved the great Odes and dramatic poems, but working on the script of A Fruitful Season, I discovered that Keats’ great ambition was to become a successful playwright. While he was here, he worked on a tragedy with Brown, who also features in the play. It was accepted at Drury Lane Theater (sic) but never staged, so I feel I am honouring his ambition with this production.”
With original music by Robert Sword and performed by professional actors, this world premiere is introduced by Professor Christopher Mulvey of the English Project.
2TimeTheatre’s previous productions for Winchester Festival include Venus and Adonis, Meeting Miss Austen and An Honest Soldier.
First performed at St Lawrence's Church 6 & 7 July 2019.
Cast: Teddy Morris as Keats, Josh McGregor as Charles Brown.
Director: Rachel O'Neill
Writer: Cecily O'Neill
Composer: Rob Sword
Musicians: Owen Feeney and Polly Perry

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner #LDR2012
York Theatre Royal 14-29 Sept 2012
Rehearsal Trailer for The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Get a behind the scenes look at the rehearsal process and hear the thoughts of the actors on the forthcoming production.
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner by Alan Sillitoe
Produced by Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal
Adapted for the Stage by Roy Williams OBE
Directed by Marcus Romer
Working with patron Roy Williams, award winning company Pilot Theatre bring this searing text of class and the criminal justice system to the stage. This stunning new production, set in Britain's Olympic Year 2012, exposes the beating heart of a nation, still broken and still divided across class lines.
A long distance race in real time. We follow one runner, alone with his thoughts, becoming part of his journey as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh, frost bitten earth. Colin Smith is defiant. He is a young rebel inhabiting the no man's land of detention centres and young offenders institutes.
Why, for whom and for what is he running?
Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads), this gritty adaptation of Alan Sillitoe's classic text hits the ground running; unlocking the biting realism of the original book while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame.
