Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism Center in India. The Thenmala Dam is a Famous ecotourism destination in Kerala. Thenamala Dam is the largest reservoir in kerala which was built under the Kallada Irrigation project.
Thenmala Ecotourism spreads along the middle of the Chenduruny Wildlife sanctuary. This is the largest irrigation project in Kerala. The Thenmala dam is the second largest irrigation project in Kerala, India.
The Nearest railway station is Punalur. Kollam-QLN is better connected nationally. The waterfall called Palaruvi Waterfall is a Main attraction nearby.
Thenmala Ecotourism attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a lot of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain.
Thenmala have 3 zones. Adventure Zone, Culture Zone, Leisure Zone.
Adventure Zone have Elevated Ropeway, Burma Bridge, Spider Net, Rock Climbing, Flying Fox, Boating, Coracle Ride, Archery, Shooting, Zipline, Zorbing, Mountain Biking.
Leisure Zone have Lush forested park with a riverside walkway, suspension bridge & a nature-themed sculpture garden.
Culture Zone have Nakshathra Vanam, Childrens Park, Musical Fountain, Butterfly Park. There is another attraction is deer rehabilitation center. Lot's of Deer's are in this center.
Thenmala Ecotourism entry fees is Adult - 475Rs, Child - 350Rs. Thenmala Boating is done at Parappar Lake. There is a Bamboo Ride & Coracle Ride. Per head cost is 100Rs.

The Thenmala dam was built across Kallada River. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies.
Thenmala attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a host of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain. Thenmala is approachable both from Trivandrum and Punalur by road. The waterfall called Palaruvi is a prime attraction nearby. Also nearby is a deer rehabilitation center where visitors can see deer in a forest setting and have a peep into a traditional tree house used by forest dwellers to escape harm from wild animals. Other places near Thenmala are Kulathupuzha, Anchal, Punalur, Kamukumchery and Shenkottah in Tirunelveli district(Tamil Nadu). Themala is 72 km from Thiruvanathapuram and 16 km from Palaruvi Falls.

And i drove through hills for the first time in bike. An awesome along with whole body sweat ride to thenmala dam.
I had an unexpected experience during the visit to kollam - sengottai bridge.
Also visited the thenmala ecotourism office which provide various sports such as trekking, hanging bridge, boating musical fountain include restuarant, hotel stay and various other experience.

Let's watch the boating video of thenmala dam which is located in kollam district of kerala.Thenmala is India's first planned ecotourism destination from which we can learn about nature and its surroundings and also they provide tourism without affecting nature.For boating, you have to take tickets at thenmala ecotourism information centre which is 2 km from boating point.The fare for boating is 275 rupees.The boat is very similar to the bus like structure which is steady and also has comfortable seats,big windows and it have rear provision from which we can stand and watch the beauty of natural sceneries.The total run time for boating is one hour.It will cover a total distance of approximately 16 km(to & fro).Thenmala dam is surrounded by shendurney wildlife sanctuary which is popular for various kinds of flora and faunas and you can also watch the agasthiyar mountain range of western ghats. I'm sure this type of boating will give you some new kind of experience for nature lovers.

This is India's first Ecotourism Project, enagurated by former Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala E K Nayanar in 2002.
This place located at Western ghats Mountains of Kollam District (Shenduruney wild life sanctuary) about 66kms from Kollam - Shencotte NH.
This is the best place to spend entire day with family and friends. We can walk into the greeny forest and enjoy the true colour of nature.
Adventure park it's quiet adventurous. There are plenty of choices to prove our skills such as Flying Fox, Rope walking, Spider net climbing, Rock climbing, Ladder Rope climbing, water roller baloon- it's quiet funny, River crossing, Shooting etc... This place equally enjoyable for both kids and elders.

Pathways - Winding trails leading tourists to various sites.
Boardwalk - 250 m riverfront built of wooden planks that gives the visitor a close view of the stream below.
Sway Bridge - An unsupported bridge, made of wooden planks and hung from ropes across the river.
Sculpture Garden - Based on the theme 'Man and Nature', this garden depicts the relationship between the two in the serene backdrop of the forest.
Resting Points - Quiet spots in the wilderness to take a break.
Deep Woods - Soft trekking and biking programme to explore the two patches of Niptica swamp forest (2 to 4 hrs).
Boating at the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary: Battery-operated vehicles to the boat landing from where begins an exciting boat cruise. Watch wildlife at close quarters and be prepared for surprises.
This zone accommodates various activities, which favours Ecofriendly General Tourism. Restaurant, Shop court, Amphitheatre etc help the tourists understand the Kerala cusines, Kerala crafts and natural wealth and Kerala's Art, Culture etc. An open air Musical Dancing Fountain which is considered, as Natures Dance is another major attraction here.

Entrance Fee: The place is divided into various sections and there is separate charge for each area. There is no overall entrance fee. You can choose the activities that interest you. Trekking charges are also separate.
Visiting Time: Open on all days of the week from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Only on Mondays there are no shows on the Musical Fountain.
Visit Duration: It is best to spend an entire day here. Keep one day reserved for Thenmala. That way you can make the most of your trip.
Thenmala is a famous ecological spot that exhibits the true colours of nature. The biodiversity, the culture and mind blowing sceneries are sure to leave you amazed. If you are in Kollam, it is an absolute must to go to this place. It is also a great place to enjoy with family or friends and enjoy to the fullest.
Traveller Tips
Comfortable shoes and clothes are absolutely necessary. You do not want your shoes or clothes to come in the way of your fun day. There is a lot of walking involved. So, you can go for a pair of sports shoes.
It is an eco-tourism destination so try to carry minimal number of plastic bottles or other forms of plastic.
Be very sure not to litter the place. It is very well maintained.
If you are planning to stay overnight here, it is better to book your accommodation prior your visit.
Try going to Thenmala as early as possible. There are a lot of things to cover. To ensure that you take a proper look at things, you need quite some time.
Things to Do
There is an adventure park where you can climb rocks, go around with bikes or even walk in the area. It is a good way to spend some time in the lap of Mother Nature.
An hour of boating will refresh your mind. The activity of boating takes you through the Shenduruney Sanctuary. If you are lucky, you might also spot some animals.
For the little ones in your group, the children’s park is the best place to spend some time. There are fun rides ensuring maximum enjoyment.
If you are a shutterbug and have interest in capturing the wild elements, you can go for the butterfly safari. A guide takes you around where you can spot myriad butterflies and other insects.
Packing a picnic is also a very good idea. There are provisions for tourists who look to just sit and relax. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your family or friends.
Availability of Guides
Guidance is available for mostly all activities including trekking and Butterfly walk. They will give you all the necessary information.
Also, there are boards and instructions placed all around the Thenmala area.
Best Time to Visit
You can take a trip to Thenmala all throughout the year. The temperature rise is not very much and the winter months are moderately cold. The best time to visit would be between the months of May to November.
How to Reach
The nearest railway station is Shenkottah. It takes barely half an hour to 45 minutes from there. If you are in Kollam, the time would be slightly more.
Travelling by flight is also free of any hassle owing to the transport facilities. You can hire a cab or taxi from Trivandum International airport.
Interesting Facts and Trivia About Thenmala
Thenmala is undertaken by the government of the state of Kerala. It is well maintained and to this day remains one of the most visited places in the state.
The word ‘Thenmala’ translates to honey hill. The locals claim that the honey that is found in the area is one of the best and undoubtedly very pure.
Thenmala also uploads the culture of Kerala in the form of statues and mementoes that can be purchased by tourists too.
The deer rehabilitation centre has lots of different kinds of deer’s including the sambar deer and barking deer. Tourists can visit this place too.
KALLADA IRRIGATION PROJECT
Kallada irrigation and Tree crop Development project is the largest irrigation project in Kerala. The command area of this project is distributed over Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha district and covers Punalur, Pathanapuram, Kottarakkara, Kollam, Kunnathur, Karunagappally, Adoor, Mavelikkara and Karthikappally Taluks. The project was planned to irrigate net cultivable command area of 61630 Ha. During the course of execution few canals including Kayamkulam Branch canal were dropped and now this project is benefited for a net cultivable command area of 53514 Ha in 92 villages. Head works is completed during 1986. Left and right bank main canals are fully completed. Right bank main canal partially commissioned during 1986 and left bank main canal during 1992.

Thenmala Ecotourism is the first planned Ecotourism project in India. The activities here are conducted under different zones.The attractions in the Leisure zone includes informative displays of the variety of Flora n fauna in Kerala, the statues of varieties of dinousaurs (attractively places on both sides of the pathway, amidst the trees), the sculpture garden with the theme Nature and Human the close view of Parappar dam (it's mistakenly recorded once in the video as peppara dam, sorry) and the hanging bridge.
The deer Park is some 2 kms away from the information Centre and has variety of deers and a children's park. Though we were not able to spot the deers in abundance, we were astounded by the variety of huge trees inside the park... Trees that would be more older than us,????????.
The boating including Coracle ride is in the reservoir side of the dan which is on the Thenmala - Trivandrum route. The ticket is involved in the package you get from the information Centre and is conducted by the Forest Department. Coracle ride is one you should never miss here ????.
We skipped the Light n Sound show and the musical fountain which starts at 7.00 pm near the information Centre.
Thenmala Ecotourism in the Shenduruni Wildlife Sanctuary is really an ideal place for one day tour, especially for nature lovers, the only thing is you need a walk a lot in the friendly Forest. Food and toilet facilities are available ????, shopping maniacs please excuse ????
