A look at the oktoberfest site of Theresienwiese, Munich, Germany.
I thought that oktoberfest was a Munich-wide event rather than one which has a permanent site. I visited Theresienwiese in Munich in late July and work was already underway on the very impressive beer halls. I counted 18 but there are bound to be more than that.
I also find the Bavaria Statue and Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame) which I really had not expected. The Ruhmeshalle is a very weird place, a wall of white heads.

Theresienwiese is an open space in the Munich borough of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt. It serves as the official ground of the Munich Oktoberfest. A space of 420,000 square metres (4,500,000 sq ft), it is bordered in the west by the Ruhmeshalle and the Bavaria statue, symbolizing the State of Bavaria, and in the east by Esperantoplatz, a square named for the international language Esperanto.
There, a memorial commemorates the victims of the 1980 Oktoberfest bombing. Bavariaring, an orbital road, provides access to visiting traffic. In the north the towers of St. Paul are visible. The name of the site is derived from the name of Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, the wife of Crown Prince Ludwig I. Their wedding took place on Theresienwiese in 1810.
Since then, the Oktoberfest is celebrated every year to commemorate this event. In addition to the Oktoberfest, a spring festival and a winter festival (Winter Tollwood) take place there as well. Every year in April, one of Germany's largest flea markets is also held there.
The site is located south west of the city centre. It has its own station on the Munich U-Bahn system, on the U4 and U5 lines and the Poccistraße and Goetheplatz stations can be found near the southern end. The nearest Munich S-Bahn station is Hackerbrücke or München Hauptbahnhof (Munich central station).

Thus, the festival now runs for 17 days when the first Sunday is 2 October and 18 days when it is 1 October. In 2010, the festival lasted until the first Monday in October (4 October), to mark the event's bicentennial.

Das Oktoberfest in München 2019: Rundgang über die Theresienwiese
Das Oktoberfest in München ist das größte Volksfest der Welt. Die Wies´n zieht jedes Jahr Millionen Gäste aus Nah und Fern auf die Theresienwiese. Dieses Jahr findet das Oktoberfest vom 21.09. bis 06.10.2019 statt. Über 60 große Fahr,- und Laufgeschäfte stehen neben den äußerst stark besuchten Festzelten für die Besucher bereit. In diesem Video zeige ich euch fast alle vorhandenen Fahrgeschäfte.
Leider sind gegen Ende des Videos die Aufnahmen einiger Attraktionen misslungen. Hier musste ich nachträglich ein paar Schnitte setzen. Ich bitte um Entschuldigung dafür.

Die Bavaria ist die weibliche Symbolgestalt und weltliche Patronin Bayerns und tritt als personifizierte Allegorie für das Staatsgebilde Bayern in verschiedenen Formen und Ausprägungen auf. Das Frühlingsfest 2019 ist eröffnet! Münchens Zweiter Bürgermeister Manuel Pretzl zapfte mit drei Schlägen das erste Bierfass an und gab damit den Startschuss für das Volksfest auf der Theresienwiese.

Little information for Drone Pilots who are visiting the Oktoberfest 2017 - Please don't fly your drone in this area or in the city of Munich. There a big fines and you will get arrested. The whole city is a no fly zone during the Oktoberfest.

Das Oktoberfest in München (mundartlich Wiesn) ist das größte Volksfest der Welt. Es findet seit 1810 auf der Theresienwiese in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt München statt. Für das Oktoberfest brauen einige Münchner Brauereien ein spezielles Bier, das eine Stammwürze von mindestens 13,5 % aufweisen muss und ca. 5,8 bis 6,4 Volumenprozent Alkohol enthält.[4] Das Oktoberfest generiert in den zwei Wochen jährlich durchschnittlich eine Milliarde Euro Umsatz.
Geschichte:
Anlässlich der Hochzeit zwischen Kronprinz Ludwig und Prinzessin Therese am 12. Oktober 1810 fanden in München zahlreiche private und öffentliche Feiern statt. Auf deren letzte, das Pferderennen am 17. Oktober, geht das Oktoberfest zurück. Vermutlich im Gedanken an das 1786 letztmals ausgetragene Scharlachrennen, das im 15. Jahrhundert erstmals vor dem Karlstor stattfand und Teil der Jakobidult wurde, schlug Andreas Michael Dall’Armi in seiner Funktion als Major der Nationalgarde ein Pferderennen mit Ausstellung und Schau zur öffentlichen Huldigung des Brautpaares vor. Überliefert ist, dass die initiale Idee, die zu diesem Vorhaben führte, von dem Lohnkutscher und Unteroffizier der Nationalgarde Franz Baumgartner ausging. Dieser Ursprung des Festes gilt jedoch als nicht unumstritten.
Der Festplatz außerhalb der Stadt wurde aufgrund seiner natürlichen Eignung ausgesucht. Der Sendlinger Berg (heute Theresienhöhe) wurde als Tribüne für die 40 000 Zuschauer des Rennens gebraucht. Die Festwiese blieb bis auf das Königszelt unbebaut. Die Verköstigung der Besucher erfolgte oberhalb der Tribüne auf der Anhöhe, wo „Traiteurs“ u. a. Wein und Bier anboten. Bevor das Rennen begann, erfolgte eine Huldigung der Hochzeiter und des Königshauses in Form eines Zuges aus 16 Kinderpaaren, die mit Trachten der Wittelsbacher, der neun bayerischen Kreise sowie weiterer Regionen bekleidet waren. Anschließend sang ein Chor aus Feiertagsschülern, bevor schließlich das Festrennen mit 30 Pferden auf einer 11 200 Schuh (3270 Meter) langen Rennbahn folgte. Als erstes Pferd kam das vom möglichen Initiator Franz Baumgartner über die Ziellinie, der seine Goldmedaille von Rennmeister und Staatsminister Maximilian Graf von Montgelas überreicht bekam.

As many as six million people are expected to show up to celebrate Oktoberfest, which opened Saturday in Munich, Germany.

Why is there an annual beer festival?
The Oktoberfest has its origins in the year 1810. However, it looked a bit different then, as the first Oktoberfest was a horse-race, held as a part of the wedding festivities of Bavarian King Ludwig I. and his wife Theresie.
The people liked that horse-race so much, that it became an annual event, which then developed into what we know as Oktoberfest today, as the focus shifted more and more away from the horse-race and towards fun rides and drinking beer.
Why does the Oktoberfest start in September?
The original horse-race was an event that only took one day. Over the decades, as the horse-rave had disappeared, the Oktoberfest got longer and longer, until it lasted two weeks, as it does today. However, it is not uncommon in Bavaria for the weather to become quite cold in the middle of Oktober and there can even be snow. To avoid a snowy Oktoberfest, the decision was made to start the Oktoberfest earlier, usually some time around the beginning of the fourth week of September.
What do I have to know, when it comes to beer?
First of all, the reason, why beer has always been so popular in Munich, is that the quality of the drinking water was always very bad and most likely the reason of numerous cases of the plague and the cholera in former times. So people rather drank beer, because it was a lot safer to drink, as most germs were killed during the brewing process.
The beer you get on the Oktoberfest is Munich beer, which means: It was really brewed on Munich ground. It is a bit stronger than your regular Munich lager beer. Instead of the more common 5% to 5.5% (always depending on the brewery) of alcohol, the Oktoberfest beer usually is about 1% stronger.
Liter, Maß, Hoibe - how does that work?
The most common drink to order at the Oktoberfest is eine Maß Bier.
Maß means that you will get one liter of beer. Maß means measure or unit in
German and is female: Die Maß. Correctly pronounced, Maß rhymes with buzz.
What a coincidence...
Half a liter of beer is called Halbe (or Hoibe in Bavarian). Never mind the pronouciation of Halbe, because you won't get one in a beer tent anyway.
What do I eat?
Pork, chicken or oxen.
Roast pork is usually served with dumplings made from potato-dough and a very hearty sauce. The same goes for the oxen.
A very popular Bavarian snack is half a chicken. The important thing is the skin of the chicken, which is extremely well-spiced and should always be very crispy. In Bavarian it is calles a hoibads Hendl.
Am I allowed to stand on the benches?
No. However, it has become a common thing for the visitors to celebrate standing on the benches and nobody will tell you to sit back down, when the big party has started in the evening.
Keep in mind, tough, that you won't be compensated, if you fall down and hurt yourself.
What do I wear?
Whatever you want to. There is no explicit dress-code. If you want to wear an authentic Bavarian look, you can have a look at our shop. What you should wear, is proper, solid shoes, as the Theresienwiese is originally grassland, which gets very muddy and quite soaked, when millions of people trample over it.
Anything else?
Be nice.
If you get into a brawl, there is enough police to get you arrested in a matter of seconds.
Don't harass the ladies. No! means No! - also at the Oktoberfest.
Don't drink and drive. If you are drunk, take a taxi or the subway. Note, that cycling drunk is just as forbidden as driving a car.

Wer das Oktoberfest richtig genießen will, der sollte auf jeden Fall in Tracht erscheinen, denn im Dirndl oder mit Lederhose feiert es sich einfach am allerbesten. Vor allem die Dirndl-Auswahl ist riesig, da ist wirklich für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.
Neben den Festzelten sind natürlich gerade die Fahrgeschäfte eine der Hauptattraktionen auf dem Oktoberfest.
Von gemütlich bis wahnsinnig ist in Sachen Fahrgeschäfte auf der Wiesn für jeden etwas dabei. Da gibt es zum Beispiel Klassiker wie die Krinoline, das Kettenkarussell und das ewig junge Teufelsrad.
Deutlich wilder geht es dann schon beim Höllenblitz und dem Eurostar zur Sache.
Und wer wegen der ein oder anderen Maß zu viel Angst vor einem Brummschädel am nächsten Tag hat, dem sei ein Besuch beim Wiesn-Urgestein Schichtl empfohlen.
