Why Budapest Is The Thermal Bath Capital Of The World
Often referred to as the City of Spas, Budapest sits on over 100 hot springs that feed into over a dozen thermal baths, many of which date back centuries. One of the more well-known baths was built by the Turks in 1566. All across the city, visitors can experience a variety of thermal bath experiences, from calming therapeutic spas to lively and entertaining bath parties.
According to Hungary Today, Budapest spas attracted 4.5 million visitors in 2017, with Budapest’s biggest hot spot, Széchenyi, drawing in 1.7 million visitors alone. Learn more about what makes Budapest the thermal bath capital of the world.

Take a Dip in Budapest’s Ancient Thermal Spas
For thousands of years, the people of Hungary have soaked in the rich, thermal waters that lie below the country’s surface. From Roman emperors to Turkish kings, Budapest’s baths have been attracting the bright and the bold to the city since the 2nd century. Today, bathhouses continue to dominate the capital city, home to some of the largest spas in Europe. Come along as we journey across Budapest to trace back Hungary’s age-old love of thermal spas.

Gellért Spa - Budapest, Hungary
Budapest, is a unique city in more than one way. For those who love spa and wellness, it is unique for being, the only large city in the world, which abounds in fountains of healing water. 70 million liters of 21 to 78 Celsius warm thermal water spring, forth daily from its 118 natural thermal springs.
No wonder, that as early as in 1934, Budapest was awarded the supreme title Spa City. Three years later, the first International Balneological Congress was organised, and the seat of the International Balneological Association was established at the Gellért Thermal Bath in Budapest. The Congress reasoned with the following words: ...no city can put forward a stronger claim to this than Budapest. Endowed by nature with a wonderful generosity of excellent thermal waters and unrivalled natural beauty.
Construction on the Hotel Saint Gellért started in 1912. The hotel was named for Saint Gellért, who was the first bishop of Hungary in the 11th Century. The Gellért Bath and Hotel itself, opened its doors in 1918. Two, outdoor pools were added later on, and today it combines modern technical developments with rich historical heritage. Hotel Gellért is famous for its thermal baths. The Gellért Spa which is connected to the hotel, is a very special attraction with its indoor and outdoor swimming pools, wave bath, sunbathing terrace and thermal spa. The Jacuzzi with its glass roof, and the wave bath are favorites among guests.
On my request, I was granted a chance to walk around, explore and record this beautiful spa, in the heart of Budapest. Let me show you, my Budapest hot water adventure.

Our day at the Thermal Spa Szechenyi in Budapest Hungary
A fun spa with lots to do. Kathi Fries, Todd Fries, Budapest
Budapest Hungary ???????? Roman baths
Food Tour and Thermal Spa in Budapest Hungary
We woke up extremely hung over this morning after taking a pub crawl tour through the ruin bars in the Jewish District in Budapest. We had a great time and met new people but drank way too much!
We met our guide at Great Market Hall which is a very large market that has been around since the 1800's. there you can find 3 levels of food vendors, farmers, butchers and people selling trinkets like purse and shirts.
We started off with a drink of Unicom, which is a liquorish alcoholic drink used by Hungarians to warm them up and start their day. It is very strong and actually helped with our hangover. After the Unicom we walked over to another stall to try a Langos, which is like a funnel cake/elephant ear with cream and shredded cheese on top. It is a savory dish. Last at the market we walked around to listen to the history before we tried a plater of sliced cured meats. On the platter was horse again with beef tongue.
After the market we walked around Budapest learning about the history before ducking into a small local chocolatier to sample some pieces. We even tried plain roasted coco beans which we quite bitter. After sampling some chocolates we stopped into Belvarosi Disznotoros for lunch. This place was features on a episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and was full of locals. Here we sampled many different Hungarian items like soups, pickled vegetables and cured meats. All of it was good and very filling.
After lunch we went to Auguszt for a traditional desert called a kremes and some coffee. This bakery has ben around since 1870 but had to flee during the Nazi and Communism times after which the family returned and set up shop. Lastly we stopped at the Tasting Table to try some Hungarian wines. Hungary is not typically known for wine but they are an exporter and have some really good ones.
The food tour lasted 5 hrs and we were very full. We decided to warm up before we headed to the thermal spas for a massage and a dip in some hot water.
