Tour de Nippon in Gunma 2017 - presented by PAPERSKY magazine
Papersky presents the | Tour de Nippon in Guna | May, 2017
The area features close up views of the powerful mountains surrounding Gunma’s cities. The powerful mountains are also the reason that Gunma’s Kusatsu, Hot Springs area is one of Japan’s most magnificent places to bath. And the powerful wind that blows down from the mountains helps raise one of the most robust wheat crops in Japan, helping both Udon and Pasta chefs create hearty noodles.

An onsen paradise bringing together famous hot springs starting with Kusatsu; it is also known for the World Heritage site of the Tomioka Silk Mill
Area Characteristics
Gunma Prefecture which is located in the northern Kanto region is rich in onsen. Numbering more than 180, the prefecture is known for its numerous famous hot springs among which are the big 4 onsen of Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami and Shima in the north followed by other major springs such as Manza and Sarugakyo. There are natural features such as the Special Natural Monument of Oze and the southern Mt. Akagi whose plains at the bottom are the 2nd-longest in the nation after those of Mt. Fuji, so it is an area that is surrounded in onsen and natural beauty. Japan’s first silk mill in the city of Tomioka was registered in 2014 as a part of the World Heritage site known as the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites. There is good access to Gunma from the capital and the prefecture is popular as an easy tourist destination for a day trip or an overnight stay.
Major Sites
Kusatsu is a popular sightseeing spot as it is one of the Top 3 Onsen in Japan boasting the largest output of natural water in the country. There are also other tourist spots such as a hot spring area where mineral deposits are harvested and a dry riverbed in the west. Along with Shima Onsen, there are also other famous springs such as Manza Onsen which is located at an altitude of 1800m and Oigami Onsen which is near Oze. The onsen can be enjoyed along with winter sports. The Kiryu Textile Memorial Hall which displays 1300-year-old Kiryu textiles deserves to be seen along with a trip to Tomioka Silk Mill. As well, other sites include Gunma Safari Park and Mt. Myogi which has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Views.
Food
Konnyaku (a jelly made from the konjac plant) is a Gunma specialty. At Konnyaku Park, you can enjoy a tour of the factory and a buffet. During the festivals, there are the ever-present yaki-manju buns at the food stalls, and the popular three big udon of Gunma: Mizuzawa Udon, Tatebayashi Udon and Kiryu Udon. As souvenirs, Gateau Rusk and Shimonita Green Onion Crackers are famous.
Transportation
Accessing Gunma through Takasaki is convenient. The city can be reached from Tokyo Station within about 50 minutes via the Joetsu Shinkansen (Bullet Train). From there, you can take a bus to reach Kusatsu and Ikaho. It is usual to drive around the area by rental car.
Accommodations
Of course, there are accommodations at the big 4 onsen as well as in the onsen areas of Shibukawa, Oigami, Manza and Sarugakyo and the highlands including Kita-Karuizawa. Also, there are many such facilities in the areas around easily accessible Takasaki and Maebashi.

Miyajima Japan | Shrine Island of Deers Onsen Ryokans and Torii Gate
We spent our honeymoon in Miyajima Japan at a traditional Japanese onsen ryokan with the view of famous torii gate, Itsukushima shrine and some cute deers :) The journey from the airport of Hiroshima to Miyajima was 2 hour long, but the the Miyajima ferry ride was quite scenic, and as soon as we stepped on the island, we were welcomed by a hungry group of Miyajima deers :) After feeling the smell of the fresh momiji manju cakes on Omotesando shopping street, we could easily relate with the deers; and luckily we were staying at the most welcoming ryokan of Miyajima, so we were treated with tasty Japanese delicacies right after, but this couldn't stop us from going for more with the famous oysters of Hiroshima prefecture :) During our stay we also attempted a few fun activities like the boat tour around Miyajima Torii gate and climbing up to Mount Misen with some support from the ropeway :)

Minakami-machi, Gunma Prefecture , Japan November - Digest
It's the fall foliage season in Minakami-machi. From the top of Mt. Tanigawadake, we've captured a patch of the crimson foliage that can be seen beyond the sea of clouds. The mountain lodges are closed on November the third. Tanigawadake soon turns into a snowcapped mountain. The Tone River basin is ablaze with fall colours of the leaves. Joyful days of hot springs are missed by everyone when Minakami-machi prepares for the upcoming winter.
Japan's Winter Wonderland
I went with my family to a hot springs resort in central Japan over Chinese New Year.
The resort, Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku is a world class open spa, located on Osenkaku River, upstream from Tonaegawa. The resort is located in Gunma Prefecture in the northwest corner of the Kantō region on Honshu island. Its capital is Maebashi. One of only eight landlocked prefectures in Japan, Gunma is the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kantō plain. Except for the central and southeast areas, where most of the population is concentrated, it is mostly mountainous. To the north are Niigata and Fukushima prefectures, while to the east lies Tochigi. To the west lies Nagano prefecture, and Saitama is to the south.

Today we are checking out the Shima Onsen area of the 中之条ビエンナーレ。We parked on the north side of town and tried walking to the middle area, somehow we managed to get turned around. Japan Vlog - Last days in Osaka, going back home
May 2016
We traveled in Japan in May 2016, but I haven’t gotten around to uploading these videos until now.
Our last days in Osaka before going back home to Sweden.
We had some nice lunch with a view at Vietnam French Restaurant Chao Saigon (30F) in APA Hotel Osaka Higobashi Ekimae.
Then we stayed the last night at Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, because we had an early flight the next morning.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little vlog, even though it took me a while to finish it. We had a wonderful trip, and I hope we can go back and explore more of Japan sometime. ❤
