Public Bath House. Real Russia
One of the biggest traditions of Russian men is in the New Year days going to the public bath house - enjoy the time, drink alcohol with traditional Russian appetizers and sure to steam in the extra heat!
In this video - the visit to one of the best public bath houses in Ufa, Russia, called Ufa's Banyas (in Russian: Уфимские Бани).
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Crazy Russian Spa Experience | Traditional Banya in Novgorod
Ever since we have heard about the crazy Russian Spa/sauna experience called a Banya...we just knew we had to do one.
We have left the city of St Petersburg and made our way 4 hours south to Veliky Novgorod where we are staying in the cutest little boutique hotel for the night.
Here we tried a traditional Russian Spa - a Banya, where you work with the two extremes - really hot and really cold...oh also for some reason you whack each other with birch leaves... also we had shots of Vodka afterwards and explored the little city of Novgorod.

Life at a Russian spa: Stinky water, mud wraps, and fried rat - Taste of Russia Ep.13
More films about food and cooking:
To recover from the after effects of the last episode’s “small Greek party,” Oscar and Glen go to one of Russia’s premiere spas, Mineralny Vody, to take in its legendary mineral water and treatments.
First stop is a dispensary offering a wide variety of the Caucuses’ healing waters, where the friends finds out that just because something’s good for you, it doesn’t mean it tastes good too. Next, they go to a spa for some classic health treatments. While Oscar soaks in hot mineral water in a marble tub fit for a tsar, Glen finds himself wrapped up like a mummy, encased in hot mud.
Thoroughly relaxed, Oscar and Glen head to Yutsa Mountain in nearby Pyatigorsk for something more active. Glen gets the chance to soar like an eagle in one of Russia’s best hang gliding sites.
After such a healthy and active day, Oscar decides to reward his friend’s brave feat with a “real man’s” meal, but Glen is shocked and a bit terrified to learn what dish is made of.

The Last Resort: The Strange Beauty of Soviet Sanatoriums
A photographic journey into the curious world of the former Soviet Union's sanatoriums
Soviet architecture often conjures up images of monolithic building blocks, but the era’s sanatoriums are among the most diverse and experimental structures of that time. Similar to modern-day spas but with a strong medical component, Soviet workers would spend a week or two each year at a sanatorium, paid for by the state, so that they could recover from the exertions of their labour.
This book will be the first to offer a comprehensive collection of photographs and text on Soviet-era sanatoriums, both their history, and, more importantly, their afterlives. To be clear: this isn't ruin porn; the focus will be on those sanatoriums still in operation. The book will be an exploration of the utopian ideals that these sanatoriums were built upon, the unconventional treatments that they offer and the individual stories of those who visit them.
From the steppes of Kazakhstan to the wine-growing regions of Georgia, our team of six photographers and one writer will travel across the former Soviet Union to document the best sanatoriums from this era. Expect lush interiors, evocative portraiture and stunning architectural photography alongside in-depth interviews with guests and employees.
Eating bear and frozen fish in Siberia’s snow capital, Khanty-Mansiysk - Taste of Russia Ep. 30
Oscar and Glen are in Khanty-Mansiysk, the snow capital of Siberia. Though Glen never made it up to Naryan-Mar to visit Oscar above the Arctic Circle in episodes 24 and 25, he gets a good taste of a Russian winter here… and the Florida native is not at all sure he likes it.
They begin by trying freeze-dried fish. This Siberian delicacy involves taking a frozen fish, repeatedly bashing it with a wooden club, sprinkling it lightly with salt, and eating it with a healthy dose of vodka. Though Oscar seems exhilarated by the experience, Glen finds it utterly disgusting.
Afterwards, Glen undergoes biathlon training, and Oscar soaks in a thermal spring, while temperatures plunge to -18°C. Meanwhile, the film crew watches a local granny make bread in an outside wood-fired clay oven, and is thrilled with the results.
Finally, it’s time for our ‘gastronauts’ to create their final dish – bear stew. Glen is taken aback at the prospect, and Oscar is shocked to learn bear meat must be marinated for two to three days before it can be used. At their last meal together, Glen announces that having eaten bear, it’s time for him to go back to Miami to open his Russian restaurant.

Hungary: Russian tourists flock to Hungarian spa town
Every week, many Russian tourists take a charter flight from Moscow to Sarmellek, an old Soviet air base that has been converted into a commercial airport. From there, most of the Russians go to Heviz, a small town known for its thermal waters.
According to some locals working in the service sector, during the last 2 to 3 years, the number of Russian tourists has increased by almost 60%. Laszlo Paradi, Owner of the Paradi's Grill Restaurant said, We used to be part of Russia basically - at a certain level, so we always had a kind of connection with them. So I believe they like it here, they feel at home.
Heviz is a town of just 5,000 inhabitants devoted to tourists. Most of the Russians admit that they didn't know about Heviz before, but it was their local tourist agency that recommended them this Hungarian town. One tourist, Tayana Kolyadrina said, For people in Moscow, it is a really nice place, because Moscow is really big, it is a metropolis, there is a lot of people, so if you want to have a good rest it is absolutely perfect here.
The dramatic influx of tourists in the area has created new jobs, opened new shops and it has boosted the real estate market in the region.

The Story Behind The Image | Tskaltubo, Georgia
The Story Behind The Image | Tskaltubo, Georgia features one of the highlights on both of my visits to Georgia this year, Tskaltubo, a small town a short distance from Kutaisi a city in the West of the Country.
This is not meant as a guide, but a warning as well as a showcase of the towns plight and my story in images from both visits.
During the Soviet times the Georgian town was a popular health destination famed for its therapeutic water and sanatoriums. Four trains arrived daily full of guests from Moscow in Russia. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990’s, the buildings were abandoned and fell into decay.
In 1992 a war in nearby Abkhazia broke out. An estimated 10,000 Displaced Georgians fled from the conflict and were given temporary shelter in Tskaltubo’s unoccupied buildings and sanatoriums. Twenty-five years later, hundreds of families remain living in these stunning architectural remains of a Soviet past.
