Famous for its historic and traditional ski resort, Nozawa-onsen village is well renowned among onsen (hot-spring) areas dotted around Japan.
An “onsen area” is a district with many natural hot-springs where hot water flows naturally from the earth.
The place where the hot water flows out is called the gensen. Nozawa-onsen-mura is a small village located at the foot of Kenashi-yama, a mountain that has a gensen at its center.

▼Nozawa Onsen Hot Spring Fire Festival, Doso-jin Matsuri
One of the wildest traditional Shinto celebrations in the Hokuriku Shinetsu region, Nozawa Onsen's famed fire festival takes place every winter on January 15. The festival lights up the night with fiery clashes between the male villagers. Playing particularly important roles are those aged 25 and 42, unlucky ages in Japan.
Large numbers of villagers carry torches and attempt to burn down a temporary shrine called a shaden, while the 25 year-olds defend the structure and the 42 year-olds sing and chant. Despite its destructive nature and the mad struggle, this festival is meant to celebrate the birth of a family's first child, dispel evil spirits, and ensure happy marriages.

BEST PLACE FOR ONSEN IN JAPAN
1MK Ep 03. I made it a ritual to go to an Onsen every Winter in Japan because it’s one of the most relaxing activities and traveling you can do. This was the second time I went to Kusatsu onsen in Gunma. The hotel I stayed at is called to-ki-no-ni-wa (季の庭) which costs ￥33,000 per person a night. You must be thinking wow that’s steep but it’s WORTH every bit of it because not only does it come with breakfast and a course dinner you also get your very own PRIVATE ONSEN in your room! The total trip including bus/train fare, lunch and drinks was about ￥40,000 - ￥45,000 I think.
If you’re looking to go to Kusatsu in Winter I would highly recommend to book before October!

2020 Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort Japan 野沢温泉スキー場
下呂温泉 合掌村 旧大戸家 Gassho Village of Gero Onsen
2013年9月に岐阜県の下呂温泉の近くにある合掌村に立ち寄りました。その中でのひときわ大きな「旧大戸家住宅」の内部をご覧になれます。
旧大戸家住宅は現在の白川郷集落に天保4（1833）年から弘化3（1846）年まで13年をかけて建造されたものです。御母衣ダム建設（着工年：1957年）の際に集落が離散し、保存管理が困難であったものを、保存展示するためにこの合掌村に移築されたものです。平沢勝栄氏（自民党 衆議院議員）の生家でもあります。
合掌村の合掌の里は、白川郷などから移築した10棟の合掌家屋集落で、日本の原風景を再現。村内は「合掌の里」と「歳時記の森」の２つのゾーンで構成されており、それぞれに飛騨の生活文化と山野草をはじめ、さまざまな植栽などから日本の四季を感じることができます。
Gassho Village (Gassho-mura)
There are ten historical Gassho-style structures that include the old Ohdos folk museum designated as a nationally important cultural property. They were moved from the world heritage Shirakawa-go and reconstructed about 40 years ago.
One of the biggest historical Gassho-style houses which was first built in 1846 (Edo period). It took over thirteen years to build this unique four-story architecture.
Villa Nozawa - Nozawa Onsen Village
Villa Nozawa has 14 beautiful rooms most of which are in tatami style. Magnificent sweeping views across the valley, recently renovated (including a fireplace).

Zao Onsen - Snow monsters, Skiing, hot springs
Zao Onsen is a famous hot spring area on Mount Zao in the northern part of Honshu, the main island of Japan. It's a 30-minute bus ride from Yamagata train station.
I spent two days in Zao Onsen, skiing and seeing the snow monsters were fun. It was - 11-degree Celsius up in the Mount Zao, so be prepared before you go up there via ropeway.
There are a lot of fun things to do in Zao Onsen.

Noboribetsu Onsen Winter Festival 2019
Winter festival at Noboribetsu Onsen is an elaborate affair. Held every year from 3rd - 4th Feb, the locals give thanks to the onsen gods for their blessing and pray for the continuation of hot spring water in the year to come.
The highlight of the festival is the Hot Spring Water Battle, at around 8:30 p.m. on the 4th. Around 50-60 young men from the area are split into two groups - red and white and engage in a water battle wearing nothing but loinclothes. If the red team wins, it symbolizes a rise in the temperature of the onsens. On the other hand, victory for the white team means an increased abundance of hot spring water.

The village of Nozawa Onsen is one of the Nagano ski resorts. Home of the 1998 Winter Olympics, we've got great lifts servicing our huge ski area. This aerial footage shows you the location of many places of interest in town.
