Thessaloniki Concert Hall at Diavata host area for refugees
The Concert Hall of Thessaloniki is towering mounds against the pain of refugees and the threat of xenophobia, undertaking a series of extrovert actions with a strong social character.
Following the philosophy of the new management, the greatest cultural organization of Northern Greece has held the first suburban outing, with an original event in Diavata. It is, at the same time, the first concert taking place in an organized host area for refugees in Greece.
Eradicating the dividing boundary of its imposing facilities, the Concert Hall “emigrated” in the refugee relocation camp which has been developed in the west side of Thessaloniki, in the afternoon of Saturday 9th April, and summoned up the international language of sounds, in order to communicate with thousands of rootless people of the Middle East, to allay their suffering and trace new artists among them.
In the location of the formerly so-called Anagnostopoulos military camp, which today hosts 1,950 people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Kurdistan, the Concert Hall held a concert with the participation of various artists representing scholarly, traditional and contemporary music. The Deputy Department of Culture of the City Hall of Thessaloniki and the social organizations “Oikopolis’’ and “Kalos Tous” have been of significant help to the event.
“In times of horror shall we still sing ?”
“Today, we are leaving the mark of our own intervention, according to which, when the human existence is led to a tipping point, as it is now the case with the refugees, then art undertakes the role to talk, to describe, to relieve and handle misery”, stated the new President of the administrative council of the Concert Hall of Thessaloniki, Nikitas Mylopoulos.
