Thiepval Memorial 1916-2016
At 7:28am on 1 July 1916, the 7 day British bombardment of German lines on the Somme reached its final deafening climax. Some 70,000 British soldiers made their final preparations as huge British mines were blown under some of the strongest German positions. At 7:30am, the men began their advance and the 141 days of the Somme Offensive began.

The Battlefields from Above | Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme | DJI Phantom Drone
This is a short one-shot type clip from my recent trip to the WW1 battlefields in Belgium and France in June 2017. This videos shows the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
The Thiepval Memorial, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916.
Before filming in this historic location I checked with the relevant authorities for permission to fly the Phantom at these locations and the CWGC agreed that I could.

Remembering an Uncle at the Thiepval Memorial
David Hood and members of his extended family came to the Thiepval Memorial in France to remember his uncle, Geoffrey Hood who died in WW1. The Thiepval Memorial is the largest British battle memorial in the world and honours those yet to be found.

Installation of new flagpoles at #CWGC Thiepval Memorial
Momentous day at #CWGC Thiepval Memorial #France as the new flagpoles are installed as part of the final stages of #restoration.
The flagpoles weigh a remarkable 480 kilos each, and measure 12 metres in height.
The two poles are topped with a British and a French crown, symbolic of Thiepval’s role as both a memorial to the missing of the Somme and an Anglo-French Battle Memorial.

A magnificent memorial to over 73,000 unknown soldiers of the Great War
The Battlefields from Above | WW1 France & Belgium | DJI Phantom Drone/Osmo Handheld
This is a short edit from my recent trip to the WW1 battlefields in Belgium and France in June 2017. Hopefully there will be a few more videos to follow this one giving a bit more detail about some of the places we visited along with some more footage.
I have been to some of these locations before, but the ability to get a birds eye view of some of the locations makes them even more breathtaking than I could've ever imagined.
Before filming in these historic locations I checked with the relevant authorities for permission to fly the Phantom at these locations. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) agreed that I could fly; whereas it is strictly forbidden at all the Canadian Memorials in accordance with Canadian National Park rules.

*An interesting point to note is that Prowse Point Cemetery is the only WW1 cemetery the Ypres Salient to be named after a person and not a place. This is due to the heroism of Major Charles Prowse. It is also the location of where the 1914 'Christmas Truce Game of Football' took place.

Motorcycle Tour | France 2016 | The Thiepval Memorial
We decided to do a small battlefield tour before heading home and stopped off at the Thiepval Memorial. A truly humbling place that really makes you think and appreciate everything those brave men did for us all those years ago.
