Thiksey Gompa is one of the biggest monasteries in central Ladakh and is famous for the Maitreya temple which houses a 49 foot Maitreya statue built to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970. It is the largest of the Maitreya statues found in Ladakh.
Another feature of the monastery worth mentioning are the colourful religious murals painted across its walls. Intricate depictions of Mandalas and wrathful deities relating to Tantric Buddhism are on display.

Thiksey Gompa - Monasteries of Ladakh
Idea and Creation:
Thiksay Gonpa, 22 Km from Leh is the most beautiful of all monasteries in Ladakh, belongs to the Gelukpa order. The Gonpa was first build at Stakmo by Changsem Sherab Zangpo of Stod. Later the nephew of Sherab Zangpo, Spon Paldan Sherab, founded the Thiksay Gonpa on a hill top to north of Indus river in 1430 AD. There are sacred shrines and many precious objects to be seen there. Two hundredfifty monks are in residence. The successive reincarnations of the Skyabsje Khanpo Rinpoche act as incumbents of the monastery. Sacred dances are held at the time of the Gustor the annual festival, which is performed every year from the 17th to 19th day of the 9th month of Tibetan Calendar. Although there was a very large temple built in ancient times at Thiksay by Rinchen Zangpo, the Translator, now it is in ruins. What remains of the building and walls can be seen at the site of the temple which was called Lakhang Nyerma and which was dedicated to the goddess Dorje Chenmo

Thiksey Monastery Vlog, Leh City, Jammu & Kashmir, India My Ladakh tour vlog #4
Thiksey monastery- Leh city has few of the best tourist attractions of ladakh and this is one of them. Located just few minutes’ drive (19 kms) from centre of the leh city in the village known as thiksey. This monastery is on height of aprox 12,000 fts above sea level on the hill just adjacent to the Indus river. You can see a superbly done Buddhist art, statue, stupa and painted walls. It has 50 ft Maitrey Buddha statue inside. Outside view of the monastery is really beautiful. It is the largest structure in middle of ladakh. It has Buddha statue, tara temple, assembly hall, lamokhang temple. I would strongly recommend to visit this monastery and for sure for them who love to know more and more about Buddhism.

Thiksey Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh and is located about 19 Km from Leh on the Leh–Manali highway. It is often compared with the Potala Palace in Lhasa, on account of its general appearance, as it occupies the entire south face of a hill. At the top of the monastery are buildings painted red and yellow followed by a tumbledown of small one-room box-like houses for the lamas, which are punctuated by large rectangular buildings at intervals. The route leading up to the monastery is lined with chortens (stupas) and mane (prayer) walls.

Thiksey Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, India
View of the Thiksey Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in central Ladakh, Kashmir, India.
Thikse Gompa or Thikse Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Yellow Hat (Gelugpa) sect, located on top of a hill, approximately 20 kilometres east of Leh in Ladakh, India. It is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and is the largest gompa in central Ladakh.
The monastery is located at an altitude of 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) in the Indus valley. It is a 12-storey complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. One of the main points of interest is the Maitreya (future Buddha) Temple which is installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970. A 15 metres (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya, the largest such statue in Ladakh, covering two storeys of the building is deified in the monastery. A nunnery is also part of the complex.
In the early 15th century, Tsongkhapa, the founder of the reformed Gelugpa School (the Yellow hat sect), sent six of his disciples to remote regions of Tibet to spread the teachings of the new school. Tsongkhapa gave one of his disciples, Sherab Sangpo, a small statue of Amitayus (Chepakmet), the Buddha of longevity who is invoked for long life, health and happiness. It contained bone powder and a drop of Tsongkhapa's own blood. Tsongkhapa directed him to meet the King of Ladakh with a message seeking his help in the propagation of Buddhist religion. The King, who was then staying in the Nubra valley near Shey, greatly liked the gift of the statue. After this meeting, the King directed his minister to help Sherab Sangpo to establish a monastery of the Gelugpa order in Ladakh. As a result, in 1433, Sangpo founded a small village monastery called Lhakhang Serpo (meaning Yellow temple) in the village of Stagmo, to the north of the Indus River. In spite of his efforts, the lamas who embraced the Gelugpa order, were initially few, although some of his disciples became eminent figures over the years.
Ladakh is a region of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that extends from the Karakoram Range in the north to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent( According to Hinduism Yaksha people born from 5th wife of Kashyapa Rishi). It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet.
Historically, the region included the Baltistan (Baltiyul) valleys (now mostly in Pakistani Kashmir), the entire upper Indus Valley, the remote Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti to the south, much of Ngari including the Rudok region and Guge in the east, Aksai Chin in the northeast, and the Nubra Valley to the north over Khardong La in the Ladakh Range. Contemporary Ladakh borders Tibet to the east, the Lahaul and Spiti to the south, the Vale of Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west, and the trans–Kunlun region of Xinjiang on the north side of the Kunlun Range across the Karakoram Pass in the far north. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture.
The largest town in Ladakh is Leh. Almost half of Ladakhis are Tibetan Buddhists and the rest are mostly Shia Muslims. Leh is followed by Kargil as the largest town in Ladakh. Some Ladakhi activists have in recent times called for Ladakh to be constituted as a union territory because of perceived unfair treatment by Kashmir and Ladakh's cultural differences with predominantly Muslim Kashmir.
