The legendary Thimlich Ohinga in Migori is one of the forgotten treasures of Kenya
It has been considered as one of the attractions in the Western Kenya tourism circuit tucked in the bowels of Migori County, the legendary ThimLich Ohinga however remains one of the neglected if not forgotten treasures of Kenya's tourism industry. Ouko Okusah visited the centuries old archeological site and filed this story.
Kit Mikayi & Thimlich Odinga Ancient & Prehistoric Rock Formations Western Kenya Pt 1
The first site, Kit Mikayi rock formation is a megalithic formation of gigantic boulders stacked on top of one another near Kisumu, Kenya. There appears to be a lot of weather erosion & parts of the facing rocks have broken away due to the age of the rocks. The difference in patina growth indicates how old the rocks might be. The second site, Thimlich Ohinga resembles the circular stone structures found throughout southern Africa, the main site which is protected by the museums of Kenya is like that of Greater Zimbabwe only smaller. There are hundreds of other dry stone circles scattered throughout the nearby countryside only visible from the air. I believe these two sites date back tens of thousands of years which is not what we are lead to believe by archaeologists, saying the site is 500yrs old.
THIMLICH OHINGA: 500 year old, UNESCO heritage site
Kenya is re known worldwide as a preferred tourist attraction for its amazing sites and the unmatched hospitality of its people.among the outstanding but least noticed tourist attractions is the 'thimlich ohinga' stone enclosure in migori which has been described as an architectural master piece.
Shukri Wachu visited the unesco heritage site and tells us how the fortified enclosure whose name in ‘Dholuo' literally means, frightening forest served as home to thousands of people for nearly 500 years.

Kit Mikayi Rock Museum Kisumu 2-12-2016
Kit Mikayi is a Mysterious rock formation located in a village about 30 km from Kisumu, 3rd largest city of Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. Various local traditions are ascribed to this bundle of 5-6 huge stones placed on each other through some natural phenomenon like earth quack, floods or some great upheaval. It appears to be a “tourist trap’ in true tradition of the Tourist Industry. Kit Mikayi means “Stone of the First Wife”. Thus a tribal myth has been assigned to the formation and a Kenyan tribe started worshipping the stones placed on each other. There are many other similar strange stone formations around this site scattered in an area of 150 sq. km which lead to the conclusion of some natural accident thousands of years ago. There is nothing special at this site except few stones placed on each other. The entry fee is only 200 shilling. But the journey to the site is not worth the amusement.
