Taking a cue from links between the book Lost Horizon, and Joseph Rock's travel stories published in National Geographic, we embark on an arduous quest.

Chinese tightrope walker crosses Shangri-La Gorge
Chinese tightrope walker Aisikaier Wubulikaisimu crossed through the Shangri-La Gorge and performed acrobatics at an altitude of 2,490 meters on Sunday in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The tightrope walker started his performance with his eyes covered by a strip of cloth, holding a bottle of water atop his head and also a 10-kilogram balancing pole in his hands.
With the tightrope set 300 meters above the ground and being 350 meters in length, Aisikaier reached the other side of the gorge in 15 minutes.
The strong gales in the air has made the walking even more challenging and helped Aisikaier win more screams from the spectators.
During his walking back to the starting point, Aisikaier also performed acrobatics for the spectators.
Aisikaier started learning tightrope walking at the age of six and started performance when he was ten.
He is the holder of two Guinness World Records for tightrope walking.

Panoramic view from the summit of Shika Mountain near Zhongdian (Shangri-La)
This was my best attempt at capturing the view from the summit of Shika Snow Mountain, 4450 meters above sea level.
Everywhere around us were the prayer flags so common to Tibetan terrain. According to Tibetan Buddhism they're meant to bless both countryside and more, and the different colours represent the five elements; blue (sky), green (air), red (fire), white (water), yellow (earth).
Naturally, I had to nick one as a souvenir. So the yellow prayer flag currently in my backpack means that the earth on which I trek is somewhat blessed - Tibetan style.

Yan and American arrive in Shangri-la to find the town semi-deserted and in a sad state. Still, beautiful scenery is found all around. The YiLai Grass Plains and SongZanLing Si (Temple) are simply stunning.

Yading is a national reserve in Daocheng County in the southwest of Sichuan Province, China. It is a Tibetan pilgrimage site comprising three peaks.

This itinerary describes a popular route to some of the major tourist attractions of Yunnan. Of course, it leaves various other popular places uncovered, notably the tropical paradise Xishuangbanna and the trip west toward Ruili at the border with Myanmar.
The big attractions of this route are as follows:
The lovely old cities of Dali and Lijiang, both former capitals of small kingdoms and both major tourist towns today
Sensational trekking areas, notably Tiger Leaping Gorge near Lijiang or, going further afield, Three Parallel Rivers National Park
Mountainous areas and Tibetan peoples in Northern Yunnan, around Zhongdian and Deqin
The various places on the route feel quite different to the traveler:
Dali feels like a backpacker hangout, similar to Yangshuo; there are Western restaurants and tourists everywhere.
Lijiang is among the most beautiful cities in China and the Chinese have certainly noticed; there are tour groups everywhere.
Zhongdian (now Shangrila) feels more like a Tibetan town than a city in central China.
What they all have in common are mountainous scenery, interesting architecture, ethnic minorities and lovely handicrafts — wood, silver and especially fabric items.
