Get Out and Play with Dr. Bob: Tyson Park & Third Creek Greenway
Dr. Bob Overholt's Get Out and Play with Dr. Bob series was created with the City of Knoxville, the Legacy Parks Foundation and the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center in an effort to raise awareness about neighborhood parks in Knoxville, Tennessee and to address the state's rising childhood obesity epidemic.
This series of videos, produced by PME Communications, features ways to stay active and healthy in Knoxville area parks. September's feature is Tyson Park and Third Creek Greenway.
Residing near the University of Tennessee's campus in Downtown-West Knoxville, Tyson Park provides a wide array of recreational opportunities to Knoxvillians. It boasts several of our city's recreation firsts: the first greenway (Third Creek Greenway), the first accessible playground and Knoxville's first major skatepark (Knoxville Skatepark) -- which was created with the help of the Tony Hawk Foundation. Tony Hawk himself paid a visit to the Knoxville Skatepark in October 2010. Tyson Park also has two softball fields, 14 tennis courts, 2 large shelters, and accessible restrooms.
Third Creek Greenway, which connects to the Neyland, Sequoyah and Bearden Greenways, is a popular place to run, walk, bike or pass through the park. It's part of a 16-mile greenway connection that runs east to west through downtown.

Walker Springs to Downtown Knoxville
Bike ride on Ten Mile Creek Greenway, Kingston Pike, Sutherland Ave, Third Creek Greenway, and Neyland Dr to World's Fair Park in Knoxville, TN. Camera was a bit big for the mount, so it gets a bit shaky at high speeds or over bumps. Beautiful day for a bike ride!
Abrams Creek (TN)
**Wood in Abrams Falls. Will go into more detail below**
My 100th river! Abrams Creek near Cade's Cove in the western Smokies. One of the more remote and serene runs in the park; 10 miles of kayaking with sparse trail service. Solid medium flow after well over 2 inches of rain in 18hrs.
Barring Jack's Creek, this is one of the longest shuttles in the Southeast at 1hr 20min without tourist traffic. Most of the run is moving flatwater up through Class 2/3, but there are some surprisingly fun rapids in there especially at this flow, especially Sidewinder.
The bad news...wood in the falls. Large log cutting across from river right, blocking the last large eddy above and sticking left across the lip, with another log blocking the left entrance. This flow creates a stoutass, possibly terminal hole as is, and the wood only exacerbates that. We walked, but the falls was 90% of our reason for going, so the decision wasn't taken lightly.
As far as flow, there was solid, moving flow at the take-out ( Was absolutely awesome for everything except the falls. I imagine a good flow for the falls results in a less exciting paddle out. Pick your poison.
