Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | New Glarus (#805)
[Original Airdate: January 31, 2019]
It doesn’t take long to figure out the heritage of New Glarus. If the Swiss flags or the edelweiss at Brenda’s Blumenladen don’t give it away, the Alpine architecture and the brown Swiss cows all over town sure will! You know that people are proud when they name their organizations after the city. That’s just what New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus Welding, New Glarus Kinderchor and the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant did, which made them really easy for John to find. And he was happy to be “Swissified” by Chef Roland Furst, cultural expert Peter Etter and Swiss shop owner Esther Zgraggen. He was surprised when he was asked to milk the animals at the Voegeli and Lucky Dog farms, but at least he was good at it! John may never get to the original Glarus in Switzerland, but who cares? New Glarus is better anyway!

TOP 10 Things To Do In Milwaukee, Wisconsin WITH KIDS
We had a blast exploring Milwaukee, Wisconsin! The city is filled with awesome things to do with kids: Discovery World, Milwaukee Art Museum and Harley Davidson Museum. They also have awesome breweries (kid friendly!) like Sprecher Brewery and Third Space Brewery and delicious restaurants: AJ Bombers, Holey Moley Donuts and Cafe Hollander. We spent 2 nights at the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee west and it was a perfect location to explore the city and surrounding area!

Craft Beer in Milwaukee | Eagle Park Brewery
Welcome back! Today I visit Eagle Park Brewery with the family. Eagle Park Brewery is an amazing local micro-brewery that was founded by two brothers. Eagle Park Brewery is located on the second floor of the Lincoln Warehouse in the south side of Milwaukee. I invite you to enjoy this video I made of our visit as we sit back, chill, relax, laugh, drink some beers, and eat some Costa Rican food (chifrijo, to be exact).

Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Haymarket District in Milwaukee (#801)
[Original Airdate: January 4, 2019]
Milwaukee’s Haymarket District may get its name from the past, but it’s the present and future of this perfectly situated, downtown Milwaukee neighborhood that has long-time tenants and developers alike singing this neighborhoods’ praises. For residents of Hillside and businesses like Bennett Coachworks and Miller Baking Company, this is just home. For places like Fiserv Forum and the new development coming to the old National Hardware building, it’s becoming home. And for the kids who learn at Golda Meir School and play at the Hillside Boys and Girls Club, it’s their home away from home. Any way you look at it, it’s nice to be home in the Haymarket.

Local Brews Area at Miller Park
We spent Opening Day at Miller Park doing exactly what you would expect guys in the craft beer industry to do…….hanging out in the new craft beer area! The “Local Brews” area at Miller Park is just that……..LOCAL.
Our pals Andy & Kevin from Third Space Brewing and Jim & Mike from Milwaukee Brewing Co (both of whom have beers represented at the new bar) make appearances in the video too. Watch below and then read some of our initial thoughts on the area!
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Portage (#812)
[Original Airdate: March 28, 2019]
Portage is the kind of place whose people light it up from the inside out. And that was a really good thing in September of 2018 because between the rain and the mosquitoes, John didn’t want to be outside much!
In between dodging the raindrops and swatting the bugs, he had very climate-controlled and fun visits with the American Legions folks, the police chief, the live-in caretaker at the Zona Gale House, the shop owners of the Mercantile and the Portage House of Clocks, and the business owners of Loggerhead Deco, PendaForm, Cascade Mountain and Northshore Restaurant.
Of course, our videographer was eaten alive shooting the exteriors, but as John said (usually from the comfort of the van and referring to the technical crew members), it was worth the pint of blood the Portage mosquitoes charged!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Sparta (#804)
[Original Airdate: January 24, 2019]
It’s true that Sparta Wisconsin is the bicycling capital of America, but we found lots of things happening here: soldiers marching, shovelmen building, luthiers crafting, quilters quilting, and, of course, bikers biking. Yes, Sparta likes active people and companies: Fast Eddie and FAST Corp fit right in, and so does John Gurda because he is the real life version of Ben Bikin. After all, John G. has literally been bikin’ all over Wisconsin! John McGivern is more like Ben’s friend, Willbee Ridin… As in, he will be ridin’ in his car back to Sparta because he’s coming for a longer visit!

Vatican Diplomacy: Three Models
For more on this event, visit:
For more on the Berkley Center, visit:
November 12, 2019 | Vatican diplomacy has a history that is longer than the life of most sovereign states. It also, in the past and still today, addresses a range of issues that is broader than many states engage. At the same time, analysis of Vatican policy does not easily fit standard methods of international relations scholarship or the foreign policy critiques used for secular states.
This Berkley Center Lecture used a comparative analysis of three pontificates—Pius XII (1939 - 1958), John Paul II (1978 - 2005), and Pope Francis (2013 - current)—to assess the style and substance of Vatican diplomacy today. The analysis was framed in terms of the international system each faced, their conception of the role of the Church in the world, and the pastoral and policy vision which informed each pope’s ministry.
This event was co-sponsored by Georgetown University's Office of the President and its Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs.
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Monroe (#402)
[Latest Airdate: August 24, 2017]
[Original Airdate: January 15, 2015]
In Green County they say, “cheese is life!” And there is a lot of Swiss (cheese, people and cows!), but for you shoppers, there’s more for sale than just cheese. Need a robot, or a drive-in movie ticket, or some homemade soap, or how about some of the best food we’ve ever tasted?
For you animal lovers, Monroe offers more than cows. We found prehistoric sheep (for real!) and purple martins (we know – not an animal, a bird). And for those of you looking for a new hobby, you’ll be inspired by the mystery writer who doubles as the mayor, the town clown and more than 100 accordion players who accompany the Monroe City Band.
Without a doubt, Monroe has the best court house we’ve seen and the best yodeler we’ve ever heard, and the best Limburger John’s ever tasted (OK, it was his one and only taste, but he might eat more someday). No doubt: Monroe is a town that can stimulate all the senses!

Miller Genuine Draft | Television Commercial | 1993 | Train
Miller Genuine Draft | Television Commercial | 1993 | Train
The Miller Brewing Company is an American beer brewing company headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that was owned until October 11, 2016 by the MillerCoors division of the SABMiller–Molson Coors joint venture. The company has brewing facilities in Albany, Georgia; Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Fort Worth, Texas; Irwindale, California; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Trenton, Ohio. On July 1, 2008, Miller formed MillerCoors, a joint venture with rival Molson Coors to consolidate the production and distribution of its products in the United States, with each parent company's corporate operations and international operations to remain separate and independent of the joint venture.
The joint venture ended after the SABMiller operation was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) on October 10, 2016. The new company is called Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (AB InBev).[1] On October 11, 2016, the company sold the Miller brand portfolio outside the US and Puerto Rico to Molson Coors, which also retained the rights to all of the brands currently in the MillerCoors portfolio for the U.S. and Puerto Rico.[2]
Molson Coors is the sole owner of Miller Brewing Company and plans to keep the MillerCoors name and the Chicago headquarters and to operate the company in much the same manner as before October 11, 2016.[3] For the consumer, and for employees, the change to 100 percent ownership (from the previous 42 percent) by Molson Coors will not be apparent in the U.S., according to Jon Stern, MillerCoors' director of media relations. The good news is that none of this impacts Milwaukee or Wisconsin. It'll be business as usual. Miller Lite, Coors light, Miller High Life and Leinenkugel's – and frankly all the rest of our brands will continue to be brewed by us.
