Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal, Madurai / திருமலை நாயக்கர் மஹால், மதுரை
The Nayaks of Madurai ruled this former Kingdom from 1545 till 1740’s and Thirumalai Nayak (1623-1659) was one of their greatest kings for various buildings in and around Madurai.
Tirumala Nayak is believed to have recruited the services of an Italian architect, for the construction of his Palace. Built in 1636, as a focal point of his capital at Madurai, Thirumalai Nayak intended the palace to be one of the grandest in South India. The design and architecture is a blend of Dravidian and Islamic styles. The Interior of the palace surpasses many of its Indian contemporaries in scale. The interior is richly decorated whilst the exterior is treated in a more austere style.
The architecture is a blend of indigenous and Islamic forms. Thirumalai nayakar mahal is famous for its giant pillars. Pillar's height is 82 feet and width is 19 feet.
The palace was divided into two major parts, namely Swarga Vilasam and Ranga Vilasam. The royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armory, palanquin place, royal bandstand, quarters, pond and garden were situated in these two portions. The Swarga Vilasam was used as the throne-room and has an arcaded octagon covered by a dome 60–70 feet high.
The structure was constructed using foliated brickwork and the surface details and finish in exquisite stucco called chunnam using chunnam (shell lime) and (Mixed with egg white) to obtain a smooth and glossy texture.
After independence, the Thirumalai Palace was declared as a national monument and is now under the protection of the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. This palace is open for the visitors from 9am to 5pm and the entry ticket price is Rs.10.

The Palace is located in the eastern side of the city, around 1.2 km South East of the Meenakshi Amman Temple in the city of Madurai. Madurai being a popular tourist center is well connected by railways and has daily flights to Colombo (Sri Lanka), Mumbai Banglore and Chennai.

1822-ம் ஆண்டு இங்கிலாந்து ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் நேப்பியர் மன்னர், மஹாலை புணரமைத்து, அதன் ஒரு பகுதியில் மாவட்ட நீதி மற்றும் நிர்வாக அலுவலகங்களை ஏற்படுத்தினார். திருமலை மன்னன் கட்டிய மஹாலின் ஐந்தில் ஒரு பகுதிதான் தற்போது இருக்கிறது என்கிறார்கள் ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள்.
மஹாலில் நுழைந்ததும் தென்படுவது, அரண்மனை தர்பார் மண்டபம். இங்கிருந்துதான் திருமலை மன்னர் மதுரையை ஆண்டு வந்தார்.
இந்த மஹால் முழுவதும் செங்கல் போன்ற கற்கலால் கட்டப்பட்டது. மொத்த மஹாலும் சுண்ணாம்பு மற்றும் முட்டையின் வெள்ளைக் கருவை கலந்து பூசப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த மஹாலில் மொத்தம் 248 தூண்கள் உள்ளன. ஒவ்வொன்றொன்றும் 58 அடி நீளமும் 5 அடி விட்டமும் கொண்டது.
இந்த அரண்மனையையும், மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயிலையும் இணைக்கும் சுரங்கப்பாதை ஒன்று உள்ளது என்றும், பொதுவாக போர் காலங்களில் இளவரசரும், மற்ற குடும்பத்தினரும் தப்பிச்செல்ல இந்தப் பாதையைப் பயன்படுத்துவர் என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது.
இந்த அரண்மணை மதுரை மாநகரின் நடுவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. சுற்றுலா பயணிகளுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு தினமும் காலை 9 மணி மதல் 1 மணி வரையிலும், மாலை 2மணி முதல் 5மணி வரை திறக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்.

During the 17th centuries the Madurai Kingdom had Portuguese, Dutch and other Europeans as traders, missionaries and visiting travellers. Over a span of 400 years many parts of the buildings were suffered much by time, and not inconsiderably... by the destructive effects of war; a few, however, are sufficiently in repair to be converted into use by the garrison, as granaries, store-houses, powder magazines during time of East India Company. King Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson had demolished much of the fine structure and removed most of the jewels and woodcarvings in order to build his own palace in Tiruchirapalli. However Lord Napier, the Governor of Madras, had partially restored the palace in 1866-72, and the subsequent restoration works carried out several years ago, today, we get to see the Entrance Gate, The Main Hall and the Dance Hall.[1]
After independence, the Thirumalai Palace was declared as a national monument and is now under the protection of the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. This palace is open for the visitors from 9am to 5pm and the entry ticket price is Rs.10.
Many films are shot in the Palace, primarily due to the large pillars present.
Notable films are Maniratnam's Bombay (Kannalane song), Guru (Tera Bina Song) etc. Vikram starrer Bheemaa (Ragasiya Kanavugal song)
Light & Sound shows
The palace is well equipped to perform Light & Sound shows depicting the story of Silappathikaram both in Tamil and English languages. English show starts at 6.45P.M and the fee is Rs.50 for adults. The Tamil show starts at 8 P.M. and the fee is Rs 25.[2]

Thirumalai Nayak Palace, which was built with the intention of creating a masterpiece for the then King to stay is undoubtedly one of the best architectures of ancient times. Designed by an Italian architect, this palace is a blend of Dravidian and Islamic architectural styles. The interiors of this palace mesmerises everyone with its intricate paintings and sculpting. Paintings on the roof of the palace are worth noticing.
Currently only a few parts of the palace has remained. Most of the parts of this magnificent palace was distorted and taken away during various reigns with changing times. This palace was built with foliated brickwork, while the polished texture of the palace came from the use of chunnam which is a combination of shell lime with egg white. This palace is known for its majestic pillars, with height of about 82 feet and width of almost 19 feet. As you enter the palace through its grand gates, you will reach a central hall with many massive pillars. This central courtyard is about 41,979 sq ft and has a circular shaped garden which is one of the major attractions here. Along with courtyard, the dancing hall of the palace is also worth exploring.
