A Walk Through Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest Home
The last place I visited and took video at the conclusion of my Train Odyssey 4 trip was US President Thomas Jefferson's 'retreat home' called Poplar Forest. My group of friends and I had spent the day driving to, and visiting, The National D-Day Memorial (see my video on that), and there was just enough time to squeeze in a brief visit to this historic home, which is a National Historic Landmark.

Thomas Jefferson Speaks at Citizenship Oath Ceremony at Poplar Forest in Lynchburg, Virginia
On April 13, 2018, the Daughters of the American Revolution, United States Customs and Immigration Service, and the United States District Court of Western Virginia held the Citizenship Oath Ceremony for 30 new U.S. citizens at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest retreat home near Lynchburg, Virginia. The guest speaker for the event was none other than Thomas Jefferson, 3rd U.S. President, himself. Mr. Bill Barker has been interpreting Thomas Jefferson at the Williamsburg Colonial Foundation for over 20 years, and was at the Poplar Forest Oath Ceremony to offer words of advice to both the newly naturalized and the naturally born U.S. citizens in attendance. The occasion also coincided with the 275th birthday of President Jefferson. Thanks for watching!

Thomas Jefferson in Conversation with Young Thomas Jefferson
The elderly Mr. Jefferson (portrayed by Bill Barker) recalls most of the names and dates from his younger days in this April 2018 conversation. But someone is in the audience who can certainly refresh his memories: who better than Thomas Jefferson (portrayed by Kurt Smith) to give him hints and clues. Perhaps the elder gentleman can still offer wisdom and guidance to the younger.
Both Barker and Smith appear courtesy of Colonial Williamsburg.

Poplar Forest was Thomas Jefferson's plantation and plantation house in what is now Forest, Bedford County, Virginia, near Lynchburg. He designed it and treated it as a private retreat, working on it from 1806 until his death 20 years later.Jefferson once wrote a correspondent saying It is the most valuable of my possessions. Skilled slave-labor was used in its construction.Known as the architect of such buildings as Monticello, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia State Capitol, Jefferson built the more remote and lesser-known Poplar Forest as a place to escape the hordes of visitors at Monticello and seek the solitude of a hermit. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

After the conversation with the Founding Fathers, the children wrote their own Declaration of Independence. Jefferson says it was a letter outlining complaints. What would you complain about?
The National Endowment for the Humanities' educational website, Edsitement! provides a lesson entitled Declare the Causes: The Declaration of Independence, introducing students to the precedents and development of this founding document. Check it out at
The Edsitement! lesson on the Constitution, The Preamble to the Constitution: How Do You Make a More Perfect Union? challenges students to create a more perfect community if they were stranded on an island. Find the lesson plan at

Poplar Forest
Poplar Forest is Thomas Jefferson's second and lesser known home. The home that sits on the property today was finished around 1809 and it is an architectural marvel. It was the first octagonal shaped home built in the United States. And many of the features in the home are a nod to Jefferson's love of European architecture. This home was Jefferson's private escape from public life and today it is being restored to it's Jeffersonian glory. The people in charge of the restoration are still making discoveries about one of the great Founding Fathers of our country. What a great thing for students to witness on a field trip!
