I drove through downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. This is what I saw.
Wow so Knoxville is sneaky cool and fun. Who would have thought?
Okay so on this road trip of Knoxville, we’re going to bounce around a little bit instead of doing our Knoxville city tour in one continuous drive like we normally do. Right now, we’re just outside of campus at the University of Tennessee, which begins just outside of the downtown area. We’re on Cumberland Avenue, heading east towards downtown.
It’s Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 10:30 am.
We’re on the very southern edge of downtown now, and this is the Tennessee River, where there are a handful of restaurants and housing developments. The Tennessee River begins here in Knoxville. It’s headwaters are formed due to the confluence of the French Broad and Holston Rivers.
We’re at Gay Street, which is the main drag here in Knoxville. Along Gay Street are hotels, arts venues, shopping, and a ton of restaurants and bars.
Knoxville’s population is 170,000. There’s a lot of history here. Arguably the nation’s first electric streetcar ran right up the middle of this street way back in 1890. Mountain Dew had its beginnings in Knoxville. The channel HGTV is based here too. Country singer Kenny Chesney grew up here and director Quentin Tarantino was born here.
Here on the left is Knoxville’s market square, which has a number of restaurants and some shopping. This is where Knoxville has its farmers markets, musical acts, and the city puts in a temporary skating rink in the winter time.
Now we’re heading east again back towards Gay Street.
On the north end of town is the more run down section of downtown called Old City. This is the sketchiest part of downtown Knoxville - home to the city’s main bus stop, train station and homeless shelter. There are a decent number of shops, restaurants and bars here, and this is where people go clubbing - typically starting at about 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Crime wise - it’s not pretty. Knoxville has been called one of the 50 least livable cities, because, while the downtown area might be charming and very safe, the outskirts are very poor and dangerous. Crime in Knoxville is 131% higher than other cities of its size. 1 in 4 people in Knoxville lives in poverty, almost double the national average.
For perspective, we’ll show you how quickly things change just a block or two east of downtown. The city of Knoxville has been working hard to gentrify and improve much of the greater Knoxville area by rebuilding older rundown homes in this part of town and building newer homes to appeal to younger, wealthier home owners. It’s a process that is ongoing here in Knoxville, and one we talked about a little more extensively in another video we did on the worst areas of Knoxville, where we drove through east Knoxville.
The link to that video is in the description.
For perspective on downtown, we’re going to jump to a clip on the south side of downtown, from where we will drive over the Tennessee River on the Gay Street Bridge and drive back into downtown from across the river.
Now, one more other particular area we covered was a section of the University of Tennessee, which is only two miles from downtown proper. This is what the locals call The Strip, and it’s a series of restaurants and bars where the college kids hang out. During football and basketball games, it can be quite busy here.
Leaving the strip, we head into campus proper. We’re going to show you two landmarks on campus - where the basketball team plays their games, and the campus’ football stadium. The University of Tennessee has about 28,000 students, which puts it just inside the top 50 in terms of largest attendance
Here on the left is the massive Thompson-Boling Arena where the mens and womens basketball teams play. This street is called Phillip Fulmer way. It was named after long-time football coach Phillip Fulmer. The stadium here in the middle of campus is called Neyland Stadium. It’s absolutely massive - and holds 102,000 people. It’s so large it’s hard to even get the entire thing in one frame.
That’s the end of our drive through the greater Knoxville downtown area. Hopefully this gave you some perspective on what Knoxville Tennessee is like.

Helicopter Flight over Knoxville, TN
This is an HD video of my flight over West Knoxville/The University of Tennessee campus in my friend's Robinson R22. I shot it using my GoPro Hero 2 + Wifi Bacpack. We flew over Neyland Stadium, Thompson-Boling arena, West Town Mall, The construction site for the new National Fitness Center, as well as Mortgage Investors Group and many other places. The best part is at the 14:05 mark where we did a low hover about 5' from the ground. Let me know what you think and hopefully there will be more to come.

Rick Barnes: Thompson-Boling Arena was 'electric' against Kentucky
The Vols stifled the Wildcats defensively and played with an offensive intensity missing two weeks ago in a blowout loss at Rupp Arena. And they made quite the statement: A 71-52 bullying that had both SEC and NCAA Tournament implications. Read more:

Vols Basketball - Kentucky vs Tennessee- Wildcats Come To Thompson Boling Arena To Catch A L

Kentucky Wildcats come to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. Thompson Boling Arena will be rocking. The SEC Tournament should be a good one. It will be a tune up for the NCAA Tournament.
How do you make up 17 points in two weeks? That’s the obvious question facing No. 7 Tennessee basketball as it prepares for a rematch with No. 4 Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The answer is also obvious. In college basketball, 17 points isn’t that big a deal.
The Tennessee-Kentucky series is proof of that. And you don’t have to go back far for evidence
Two years ago, Tennessee beat Kentucky in Knoxville 82-80. Three weeks later, it lost to the Wildcats 83-58 in Lexington. That's a 27-point swing.
Home court alone has made a huge difference in this series. Kentucky is 91-17 against Tennessee in Lexington, Ky. It’s 52-50 against the Vols in Knoxville.
The difference between Thompson-Boling and Rupp Arena was magnified in the 1992-93 season. Tennessee beat the Wildcats at Thompson-Boling 78-77. It lost to Kentucky 101-40 at Rupp Arena in the SEC tournament just 16 days later.
See. Seventeen points isn’t a big deal.
Not only will UT have the home-court advantage in the rematch between top-10 teams, Kentucky will be without a prominent player, forward Reid Travis, who has been sidelined with a sprained knee.
Granted, the Vols are leery of how much they will gain by Travis’ loss. Last Saturday in Baton Rouge, La., Tennessee found out just before tipoff that LSU’s leading scorer Tremont Waters wouldn’t play because of illness.
LSU handed off the point guard duties to freshman Javonte Smart, who scored 29 points and hit the game-winning free throws in an 82-80 overtime victory.
Travis’ loss seemingly reduces Kentucky’s advantage against UT. In the victory at Rupp Arena, he was part of a four-man post rotation that overwhelmed the Vols.
Even without Travis, the Wildcats still could have an edge in the post.
PJ Washington, who scored 23 points against Tennessee, was the most dominant player on the court. Freshman EJ Montgomery had six points and four rebounds in just nine minutes against UT. He was more productive than Tennessee starting post player Kyle Alexander, who had four points and three rebounds in 18 minutes before fouling out.
Kentucky also has 6-foot-11 Nick Richards. He's an upgrade over Tennessee’s backup post players, John Fulkerson and Derrick Walker.
Defending Washington will remain Tennessee’s biggest challenge. He repeatedly got the ball in the lane and went to his right while making 9 of 12 field-goal attempts at Rupp. If the Vols could just force him to his left a few times, that would constitute defensive improvement.
Better shooting from the perimeter would be a huge plus for Tennessee’s offense. Although point guard Jordan Bone shot well, fellow guards Lamonte Turner and Jordan Bowden were a combined 3-for-18 from the field against Kentucky.
Both should find Thompson-Boling more accommodating. Although Tennessee entered Rupp as the nation’s No. 1 team, it seemed intimidated by the Wildcats, who were egged on by a large, loud sellout crowd.
Maybe, Tennessee’s crowd can do its part to help make up that 17-point deficit.
Vols react to No. 6 seed
The Tennessee Volunteers respond to being seeded No. 6 in the NCAA Tournament, Sunday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Vols will face San Diego State on Thursday in Providence.
