SG50 Thong Chai Charity Walkathon 同济慈善义走
To celebrate 50 years of Singapore’s independence in a meaningful way, Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution organized the SG50 Thong Chai Charity Walkathon on 18 and 19 April 2015. 3 Members of Parliament were invited to officiate the ceremonies and to rally for short distance participants at 3 slated locations, and 50 courageous and warm-hearted warriors spent 2 days on foot to complete a 60-km route linking these 3 sites to form a heart-shape across our island nation. The appreciation dinner was held at Thong Chai Building and the GOH of the dinner was Minister of State, Mr Sam Tan Chin Siong.

NUS Baba House: Dr Nikhil Joshi
The NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road is not just a living heritage museum, it is also a place to learn more about using traditional building materials such as lime plaster in restoration work. Dr Nikhil Joshi, a conservation expert, reflects on why this is important. The NUS Baba House was restored and curated by the NUS Department of Architecture, NUS Museum, The Peranakan Association of Singapore and URA from 2006 to 2008. This video is presented in October 2019 as part of URA’s celebration of 30 years of conservation in Singapore since 1989.

Chapter 3- Sharing Responsibilities Rain or Shine
“The colonial authorities did not provide protection and welfare for the Chinese migrants. Hence, clan associations and self-help organisations were established to provide basic social welfare and personal security for their clansmen.
Most Hokkien related associations typically stemmed from places of worship. For example, in 1840, Thian Hock Keng Temple was built in dedication to the Goddess of the Sea and the Goddess of Mercy. Subsequently, Thian Hock Keng designated an office within its premises as a meeting place for Hokkien clansmen.
The clan associations played active and important roles in the areas of self-help groups, charity work, medical assistance, ancestor reverence, education, mass weddings as well as the preservation and promotion of traditional culture. In the area of charitable work, the Thong Chai Medical Institution was founded in 1885 to offer medical care to the poor within the community. Not only so, clan associations also made an effort to preserve Chinese culture and traditions. From 1956 to 1960, Hokkien Huay Kuan held a total of 17 mass weddings for couples from all walks of life, irrespective of dialect groups.”
