Thor's Cave Peakis a natural cavern located Wetton, Ashbourne DE6 2AF in the Manifold Valley of the White Peak in Staffordshire, England. It is classified as a Karst cave. Located in a steep limestone crag, the cave entrance, a symmetrical arch 7.5 metres wide and 10 metres high, is prominently visible from the valley bottom, around 80 metres (260 feet) below. Reached by an easy stepped path from the Manifold Way, the cave is a popular tourist spot, with views over the Manifold Valley. The second entrance is known as the West Window, below which is a second cave, Thor's Fissure Cavern.
Thor's Cave was served by a railway station on the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway from 1904 to 1934; the disused line now forms the Manifold Way.
This Peak District walk starting from Wetton explores the hills and dales either side of the Manifold Valley. First we visit the rocky tor above Thor’s Cave with views over to Ladyside Wood, Grindon and north along the Manifold Trail to Wetton Mill and beyond. The walk then descends to view Thor’s Cave with its massive 60ft high entrance before descending further to the Manifold Valley Cycle Trail. The River Manifold is often dry here as it sinks down swallow holes reappearing a few miles away at Ilam.

Peak District Walk - Manifold Dale & Thor's Cave
I went for a short wander today down Manifold Dale in the Staffordshire part of the Peak District. I had an extended lunch break in Thor's Cave while recording a time-lapse so I thought i'd show you around. I've also thrown in some of the images and the other footage I shot during the day. Once again the song that I used in this movie is a self made track using Propeller Heads Reason, It currently has no name :-)

This is Thor's Cave, Staffordshire, which was named after the old Norse god. Excavations have shown that the cave was occupied as long as 10,000 years ago and this occupation probably continued until Roman or Saxon times, making it one of the oldest sites of human activity in the Peak. Stone tools and the remains of a range now extinct animals were found within the cave.
Most importantly this was used in the filming of Ken Russells 'The Lair of the White Worm

Thor's Cave via Ecton & Wetton
A circular walk around the Manifold valley.
Starting from the car park near Wetton Mill farm I crossed the Manifold river and followed its adjacent path north as it wound its way towards Ecton. After an hour I'd climbed Ecton hill and was heading back south along the ridge passing several mine shafts and out buildings. By lunchtime I'd descended into Wetton village and was heading east and up towards the legendary Thor's cave.
Thanks for viewing, VanSolo (Martin).

Haunted Peak District : Thor ' s Cave ( Entrance )
A site survey of the Haunted Cave. Thor's Cave (also called Tor's Cave or Thor's House) is located in The Manifold Valley, in the Peak District, Staffordshire, England. It has an elevation of 870 feet, the cave mouth being 7.5 metres wide and 10 metres high. It has seen human habitation since Palaeolithic times - excavations in 1864 - 1865 and 1927 - 1935 found seven Palaeolithic burials together with stone tools, amber beads, pottery and bronze items. Later in the Iron Age and during Roman occupation, the cave witnessed more intensive human inhabitation. It was also used as a filming location for the film Lair of The White Worm.
Thor's Cave is a Haunted site. Haunted by both the ancient inhabitants and also by a lone Roman sentry who has been seen standing guard in the cave mouth itself. The site was used by the Romans as a fortified position. Other Ghost sightings include Viking warriors, who used the cave as a winter camp during the Dark Ages. Hence the name Thor's Cave. Though some historians have challenged this assumption, saying Thor's cave is but a variation on the original name of Tor's Cave which has changed over time.
There is full public access to Thor's Cave, best accessed from the nearby village of Wetton - a short walk of about 20 minutes.
NOTE - Thor's Cave can be dangerous to access in wet weather, the rocks are very slippery, caution is advised.
