Arrival of Niels Skovgaards Magnusstenen at Thorvaldsen Museum Copenhagen 2014
The exhibition “À la Grecque! The Sculptors and Antiquity 1898-1962”.
While Bertel Thorvaldsen primarily took his artistic point of departure in Classical Greek art and its Roman copies, it was now the earlier, more ‘primitive’, Archaic art that came into focus. Niels Skovgaard was the first artist to be struck by a ‘transfiguring light’ on seeing Archaic sculpture. Skovgaard saw the Archaic sculptures as individualizing – unlike the Classical ones, which were idealizing. The recognition of this true-to-nature feature of Archaic art subsequently became a guiding principle for his art, beginning with the sculpture The Magnus Stone from 1898, in which he introduced a brand new style in Danish art, and the Archaic inspiration quickly became one of the most fertile strands of Danish modernism. It continued with sculptors such as Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, Niels Larsen Stevns and Svend Rathsack, and made its impact in earnest in the 1920s, when artists like Astrid Noack, Adam Fischer and Henrik Starcke engaged in dialogue with the Archaic style. Later Axel Salto and Svend Wiig Hansen followed suit.
Several of the sculptors represented in the exhibition are not so well known today – for example Adam Fischer and Henrik Starcke – but their works deserve renewed attention from both an artistic and arthistorical perspective. Others, like Astrid Noack, made some of the most iconic works in Danish art. The range of expression from Niels Skovgaard to Svend Wiig Hansen is wide, but it is quite clear that the inspiration from the Archaic art of antiquity links them together.
The exhibition is built up as a series of dialogues, such that the modern works are shown together with the ancient works, which have been borrowed from the Royal Collection of Plaster Casts. This brings out obvious, but also surprising connections and meanings that have never before been presented as a totality in an exhibition.
Thorvaldsen Museum + Christmas Market Copenhagen
The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen lived 1770-1844. He was born of poor parents in Copenhagen. After training in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts he went to Rome where he lived and worked for more than 40 years. Here, he became one of the rnost famous sculptors in Europe. Late in life, he bequeathed his sculptures and art collections to his native city, which showed its gratitude by building Thorvaldsens Museum. The building was erected 1839-1848 as the first Danish museum, built to a desien by the architect Gottlieb Bindesbell, Inspired by ancient, poly- chrome architecture, the building provides a beautiful and strik- ing framework around Thorvaldsen's white, neo-ciassical sculp - tures. Thorvaldsen returned from Italy six years before his death. He followed the building of the museum, but did not live to see its opening in 1848. He is buried in the museum courtyard.

The Thorvaldsen Museum is a single-artist museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, dedicated to the art of Danish neoclassicistic sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.(1770–1844), who lived and worked in Rome for most of his life (1796–1838). The museum is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen next to Christiansborg Palace. Designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, the building was constructed from 1838-48 following a public collection of funds in 1837.

COPENHAGEN: EXPLORING the magnificent statues of the CATHEDRAL (DENMARK)
SUBSCRIBE: - Copenhagen, the Church of Our Lady (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke): Let's go visit the magnificent 'The Church of Our Lady' (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke) Cathedral in Copenhagen, Denmark, located next to the main building of the University of Copenhagen. The present day version of the church was designed by the architect Christian Frederik Hansen in the neoclassical style and was completed in 1829. The pediment is decorated with bronzes of Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The interior is likewise decorated with the twelve apostles (one in front of each of the piers of the central nave), the Risen Christ displaying the wounds in his body (in a niche above the altar) and in front of the altar the baptismal fount in the form of an angel holding a large scallop shell, all in Italian carrara marble. All of these sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It's linked to nearby Sweden via the Öresund bridge. Copenhagen, its capital, is home to royal palaces and colorful Nyhavn harbor, plus the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic “Little Mermaid” statue. Odense is writer Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown, with a medieval core of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.

Denmark Part 4: Fine Art and Fine Dining
Part 4 of my 2017 Thanksgiving travels in Denmark. Starting out with a canal tour of Copenhagen, visits to the Thorvaldsens Museum and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and punctuated by a nice dinner at Barr Restaurant.
The sound quality during most of my narration is obscured by background noise. This is something I hope to avoid in the future as I get better at this!

Surrounded by monumental sculptures of The Christ & The Apostles, at The Christ Gallery, in Thorvadsens Museum, the Kottos Quartet, certainly, managed to impress the audience and the heavenly powers!
Blending Nordic, Mediterranean and Baroque tunes, with some intrepid modern beat, they made sure to captivate the attention of of the audience with the walls resonating beautiful vibes and stances coming forth during the performance!
The sculptures, in the Gallery, are the original plaster models by Bertel Thorvaldsen, (1770-1844), and the marbel models can be seen at Vor Frue Kirke/ Our Lady's Church In Copenhagen! See the links at the end of this video!
I enjoyed the instrumental blend and the resulting perfformance, and I hope you do too!
Come back for the second part!
Cheers & Avanti La Musica!
