Tayo Olayode - Artist of the Month - May
Tayo Olayode (b. 1970) is a self-taught experimental artist from Lagos, Nigeria. His experimentation occurs through vigorous research and consistent use of a variety of materials resulting in abstract, realist and surrealist works.
A Fine Art graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Tayo’s approach is influenced by masters from different school of thoughts, including the Late Fred Achibong, Abayomi Barber and Abidodun Olaku. In his twenty years practicing as a full time studio artist, Tayo’s paintings are most identified by his subtle yet vibrant use of lines in representing his figures. His technique defies the traditional compositional elements using transparency of overlapping lines and colour to create an illusion of depth. Multiple bodies in elongated and sometimes stylized are used to convey motion and emotions on the surface. Selected works are a mid-point between his mastery of of water colour and acrylic medium.
Olayode’s practice has won him multiple awards including the Terra Kulture / Ford Foundation Best Young Artist Nigeria in 2007 and in 2014, a residency at Vermont Studio, U.S courtesy Arthouse Foundation.
Group exhibitions include Lost in Lagos at A Whitespace Creative Agency (2012), Today In History at Thought Pyramid Art Centre, Abuja (2015), Watercolor Biennale at Cityscape Community Art Space, Vancouver Canada (2016). In 2017, SMO Contemporary presented Olayode’s solo show Permutation in Lagos, Nigeria.
Tayo plans to continue mastering his different styles and finding innovative ways to experiment as he seeks to introduce alternative ways to represent his unique creative voice.
Anthea Epelle - Artist of the Month - December
Self-taught artist Anthea Epelle (b.1972) creates paintings employing mainly oil on canvas. Born in London, England, Anthea schooled in Lagos and Port Harcourt and later studied Fashion, Design and Technology at The London College of Fashion, UK. She is inspired by expressions, texture, patterns, and alignment; all of which are reflective in her abstract and figurative work.
Since taking up painting professionally in 2007, Anthea has defined her creating process and is still evolving with her practice. She explores portraiture to a great degree and close-ups of these expansive faces call for attention. Anthea’s art starts with exploration as she outlines her characters. She enjoys recreating the human face and though she is often drawn to painting women, The Fedora Man 2018 is as glorious. Her use of lines is delicate yet bold ¬– they add a vibrancy that is subtly dramatic.
Group exhibitions include Nigeria Our Nigeria at the Presidential Inauguration Exhibition, Abuja (2011), The Contemporaries, at the Wheatbaker Lagos (2015), Women’s Month at Rele Gallery, Lagos (2016) and the Afro Modernism in Abuja (2016). Several of her works have been sold at auction by Arthouse Contemporary.
Anthea is featured in the “Art of Nigerian Women” book by Chukwuemeka, launched in 2016.
Anthea’s forward is “going back”. She wants her art to take her back to her culture, history and roots; in which she plans to translate these on canvas, photography and fashion in a bid to liberate not only the viewer but herself.

Visit to the Abuja Arts and Crafts Village
The Arts and Crafts Village has quite a lot of locally made items with tourists visiting frequently, looking for lovely gift items to purchase. I was surprised I'd hardly ever even heard about the place.
