Three Dikgosi Monument is a bronze sculpture of three chiefs, located in the Central Business District of the capital city of Botswana, Gaborone. This 5.4 meters (18 feet) monument, depicts the three tribal chiefs, Sebele I, Bathoen I, and Khama III, who in 1885 went to the United Kingdom to plead to Queen to separate them from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, which was much better option for them, than the British South Africa Company, ruled by Cecil Rhodes, which was more exploitative.

The Three Dikgosi Monument is a bronze sculpture located in the Central Business District of Gaborone, Botswana. The statues depict three dikgosi the tribal chiefs. Khama III of the Bangwato, Sebele I of the Bakwena, and Bathoen I of the Bangwaketse. Events are held at the monument such as the 2008 Miss Independence Botswana.A study conducted between January and August 2007 shows that the monument is the most visited tourist destination in Gaborone.
The monument was inaugurated on 29 September 2005 by Festus Mogae, the former president of Botswana at the time. The monument received 800 visitors a day when it first opened.
There are objections to the monument. There was controversy about giving the project to North Korean company Mansudae Overseas Projects instead of a local Botswana construction company. Some ethnic groups in Botswana see the construction of this monument as a proclamation of Tswana people dominance of other groups.
The Adopt a Monument campaign attracted two private companies, GH Holdings and Komatsu Botswana, to help the Botswana National Museum manage the property. The business will provide new rest shelters and signage for the monument.

The Chiefs succeeded in their mission after a lengthy political struggle, but had to agree on the construction of a railway line from South Africa to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
To honor the successful mission of the Three Chiefs, Botswana erected a remembrance monument with their statues located in Phase II Gaborone.
1966-Bechuanaland became independent with the new name Botswana and the first President was the late Sir Seretse Khama.
The currency is called Pula (rain)and the Three Chiefs are printed on the 100 Pula banknote.
2008-Botswana with the size of France, has around 1.7 million people and is the world's largest diamond exporter.

After suffering in the heat, rain clouds gathered -hahahaha!!!! I'm laughing because I've referenced a book called 'When rain clouds Gather' by Bessie Head and the setting of the is Botswana....
Anyway, If you didn't get that it's okay.
I spent the cooler hours at the Three Dikgosi statue in Gaborone where entrance was free:) The only thing to worry you about visiting the monument is that it is run by Govt employees and thus it is mostly closed on weekends and the best time to visit is during weekdays.
Anyway, it's an interesting place that holds a bit of the History of Botswana.

Khama the Great
In the late 19th century, the Bamangwato was most the powerful tribe in Bechuanaland (now Botswana) under Chief Sekgoma and his Christian-convert son Khama. One day, Khama disobeyed his father by refusing to marry a second wife. His polygamous father was enraged and Khama was forced to escape with his Christian followers to Serowe.
Surviving two assassination attempts, Khama went to war against his own father and won, becoming king of the Bamangwato in 1875. He abolished polygamy and murderous initiation rituals. He also introduced new methods of farming, built schools, grain silos, and water systems.
With the English, Boers, Ndebele even the Germans wanting to occupy his territory, Khama used skilful diplomacy, including travelling to meet Queen Victoria to protect his people from these invaders. This included escaping the clutches of the powerful colonialist: Cecil John Rhodes.
Khama stood firm, and Botswana and the Tswana people are thriving today! Khama died in Serowe in 1923, but still stands tall in the Three Dikgosi Statue in Gaborone! Never forget Khama the Great!

Emancipation Statue (Bussa Roundabout) Barbados
The Emancipation Statue is a public sculpture symbolising the breaking of the chains of slavery at Emancipation. It is located in Barbados , east of Bridgetown at the centre of the JTC Ramsay roundabout formed at the junction of the ABC Highway & Highway 5. Many Barbadians refer to the statue as Bussa , the name of a slave who helped inspire a revolt against slavery in Barbados in 1816 , though the statue is not actually sculpted to be Bussa.

Gaborone (Tswana pronunciation: [χabʊˈrʊnɛ][missing tone]; English /ˌɡæbəˈroʊniː/ GAB-ə-ROH-nee) is the capital and largest city of Botswana with a population of 231,626 based on the 2011 census,[5] about 10% of the total population of Botswana.[8] Its agglomeration is home to 421,907 inhabitants at the 2011 census.
Gaborone is situated between Kgale and Oodi Hills, near the confluence Notwane River and Segoditshane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, and 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the South African border.[9] The city is served by the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. It is an administrative district in its own right, but is the capital of the surrounding South-East District.[10] Locals often refer to the city as Gabs.[11]
The city of Gaborone is named after Chief Gaborone of the Tlokwa tribe, who once controlled land nearby. Because it had no tribal affiliation and was close to fresh water, the city was planned to be the capital in the mid-1960s when the Bechuanaland Protectorate became an independent nation. The centre of the city is a long strip of commercial businesses, called the Mall, with a semicircle-shaped area of government offices to its west. Gaborone is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, and this has created problems with housing and illegal settlements. The city has also dealt with conflicts spilling into the country from Zimbabwe and South Africa during the 1980s.
Gaborone is the economic capital as well as the government capital; it is headquarters to numerous companies and the Botswana Stock Exchange. Gaborone is also home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional economic community established in 1980.[12] Many languages are spoken there, Setswana (Tswana) being the main tongue. English, iKalanga, and Kgalagadi are also spoken.
The Gaborone Dam is located south of Gaborone along the Gaborone-Lobatse road, and provides water for both Gaborone and Lobatse. The dam is the second biggest in Botswana, able to hold 141,400,000 cubic metres (184,900,000 cu yd).[53] It is also starting to be marketed as a recreational area. The northern end of the reservoir is planned to become an entertainment venue called The Waterfront. There is a yacht club, called Gaborone Yacht Club, also on the northern side of the lake. The southern end houses the Kalahari Fishing Club and a new public facility called City Scapes. City Scapes contains parks, playgrounds, and boating facilities.[54] The dam is popular with birdwatchers, windsurfers, and anglers.[14] However, there is no swimming due to the presence of crocodiles gaand parasitic bilharzias.[47]Gaborone is the political centre of Botswana. Most government buildings are located west of the Main Mall in an area called the Government Enclave.[43] The National Assembly of Botswana, the Ntlo ya Dikgosi, the National Archives,[18] the Department of Taxes and Attorney General's Chambers Building, and the Ministry of Health. Near the entrance of the parliament building, there is a statue of Sir Seretse Khama, Botswana's first president as well as a memorial dedicated to the three hundred Batswana who were killed from 1939 to 1945.[62] Another monument pays tribute to the Botswana Defence Force soldiers who died in the Rhodesian Bush War.[13]
Before 1982, Gaborone held one parliamentary constituency, one seat in the Parliament of Botswana. From 1982 to 1993, Gaborone was divided into two constituencies, Gaborone North and Gaborone South. A third seat in Parliament was given to a member elected for the whole city of Gaborone. In January 1993, two new constituencies were created: Gaborone West and Gaborone Central. For local government elections, the four constituencies were divided into wards. Gaborone North had seven, Gaborone West had seven. Gaborone Central had six, and Gaborone South had five.[36] In 2002, the city had five constituencies: Gaborone North, Gaborone Central, Gaborone South, Gaborone West North, and Gaborone West South.[63]
An International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) was established on 24 July 2000 in Gaborone. The academy would provide training for middle managers for the countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).[64]
There are 21 diplomatic missions in Gaborone.

Progress made in forging even closer ties between SA and Botswana
The Presidents of South Africa and Botswana say considerable progress has been made in forging even closer ties between the two countries. This just a year after the inauguration of the Bi-National Commission.
Presidents Jacob Zuma and his Botswana counterpart Seretse Ian Khama met to renew their commitment to bilateral trade and development.
Patrice Lumumba
Patrice Émery Lumumba (born Élias Okit'Asombo; 2 July 1925 – 17 January 1961) was a Congolese independence leader and the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo). As founder and leader of the Mouvement national congolais, Lumumba helped win his country's independence from Belgium in 1960.
Within twelve weeks, Lumumba's government was deposed in a coup during the Congo Crisis. The main reason why he was ousted from power was his opposition to Belgian-backed secession of the mineral-rich Katanga province. Lumumba was subsequently imprisoned by state authorities under Joseph-Desiré Mobutu and executed by firing squad under the command of the secessionist Katangan authorities. The United Nations, which he had asked to come to the Congo, did not intervene to save him. Belgium, the United States (via the CIA), and the United Kingdom (via MI6) have all been accused of involvement in Lumumba's death.
