In Basel (260 m ü.
The Rhine rises in the canton of Graubünden and flows westwards through Northern Switzerland. In Basel (260 m above sea level), the Rhine makes a sharp turn to the north. The river grows wider at the Rhine knee and flows through the Upper Rhine Valley.
The Rhine harbor of Kleinhüningen is located on the right side of the Rhine at the northwestern end of Basel. The handling facilities for containers, steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metal consist of two harbor basins and three container terminals.
The harbor ends in the tri-border region, where Germany, France and Switzerland meet. This point also lent its name to the Three Countries Bridge (German: «Dreiländerbrücke»). It leads from Weil am Rhein (Germany) to Huningue (France) and is the longest cyclist and pedestrian bridge with an arch construction in the world.
A Sunday 3 countries tour
A sunday tour starting from Germany, crossing the french border, further to Basel in Switzerland and back to Germany.
Dreiländerbrücke (Weil am Rhein - Huning)
Two main roads, the « Hauptstrasse » in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and the « Rue de France » in Hunningue, France, are situated on the same axis. To emphasize this highly symbolic and visual connection between the two countries, the footbridge is put along the axis and not into it for the view not to be disturbed. This visual connection is enhanced by the physical one, as the design of the bridge is a response to the situation. The technical challenge is evident.
A double hexagonal tubular steel arch is the main support element of the bridge. Towards the south, another single arch is leant against it. The inclination of this arch widens the visual scope.
The details of the design such as the supports close to the river banks, the widening of the slowly rising ramps, as well as the banisters consisting of cable-suspended steel-nets leave the sight of the river undisturbed and make the bridge blend into the landscape.
Construction materials used
arch: steel
Dimensions
width: 12 m
total length: 250 m
arch span: ca. 230 m
