Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (Santanyinyue) Boat Trip (Hangzhou's West Lake)
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (Santanyinyue) / 三潭印月 is the largest island on the Outer West Lake in Hangzhou. Its name comes from the three deep pools ( the three deep areas in the lake ) south of the island where three magic stone pagodas stand. The stone pagodas were originally built in 1089 Song Dynasty ( 960 – 1279 ). They stand on the three deep-water pools respectively in a triangle.
The three stone pagodas south of the island known as Three Pools Mirroring the Moon are the landmark of West Lake and the symbol of Hangzhou. The three stone pagodas are printed on the back of the one yuan paper banknote of 1 RMB.
As the name of the island “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon” suggests, in Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival ( Moon Cake Day ), candles are lit inside the round holes of each pagoda (south of the island), creating the mixed splendor of candle light, moonlight and lake light on the three-pool area in the lake, hence the name of Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon is taken mostly as just a symbol since unfortunately most travelers can’t be so lucky to see the charming and romantic scene like this. But getting on to the island for a stroll is very easy and many first-time visitors will make a pilgrimage boat trip to the island during their Hangzhou tour.
There are several docks around West Lake where you just pay 55 yuan for a return boat trip to the island known as “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon”. If you walk along Su Causeway, you may buy your boat ticket at the dock opposite the entrance to Fish Viewing at Flower Park between the first bridge and second bridge along Su Causeway. But you don’t have to return to the dock where you come. Instead you you are able to take a boat to other docks like Hubin Park ( Lakeside Park ) on the east shore of West Lake west of the downtown Hangzhou or Zhongshan Park on the largest island known as Gushan Island on the north of West Lake.

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon
On the west lake in Hangzhou there are these three pagodas that are said to be the place to visit during 中秋节 Mid-Autumn Festival. This is because inside each pagoda, a candle is lit and casts several reflections onto the water, copying the moon. Its image is printed on the one yuan bank note.

Walking Hangzhou's West Lake (Day 3)
Walking around Hangzhou's West Lake / 西湖 on the third day included a boat trip to see Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (Santanyinyue) / 三潭印月 and a tour of Guo's Villa / 郭庄景点 (separate video).
The West Lake is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou, China. It is divided into five sections by three causeways. There are numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and artificial islands within the lake.
West Lake has influenced poets and painters throughout Chinese history for its natural beauty and historic relics, and it has also been among the most important sources of inspiration for Chinese garden designers. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, described as having influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries and reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature.
Traditionally, there are ten best-known scenic spots on the West Lake, each remembered by a four-character epithet. Collectively, they are known as the Ten Scenes of West Lake (10 Scenic Spots in West Lake 西湖十景). Each is marked by a stele with an epithet written in the calligraphy of the Qianlong Emperor. They are:
1) Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring
2) Curved Yard and Lotus Pool in Summer
3) Moon over the Peaceful Lake in Autumn
4) Remnant Snow on the Bridge in Winter
5) Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset
6) Two Peaks Piercing the Clouds
7) Orioles Singing in the Willows
8) Fish Viewing at the Flower Pond
9) Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon
10) Evening Bell Ringing at the Nanping Hill

Andrián Pertout - Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon
Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon for Clarinet and Harp, no. 430 (2015)
Composed by Andrián Pertout
Performance at the Melbourne Composers’ League ‘Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon: New Chamber Music from Australia and China’ Concert
Recorded live at Trinity Uniting Church, Brighton, Melbourne, Australia, Sunday, 30 August, 2015
Robert Schubert – clarinet; Jacinta Dennett – harp
Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon represents a Hommage à Wlodzimierz Kotonski (1925-2014), and serves as an exploration of the Octatonic Major (C, D, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, A natural and B) and Octatonic Minor (C, Db, Eb, E natural, F#, G, A and Bb) scales in conjunction with the common associated extended chord: C Major 13 (b5, #5). Also incorporated within the compositional framework are the post-tonal harmonic possibilities within the twelve-note chromatic scale as presented by Elliott Carter in his monumental publication of the Harmony Book, with the abovementioned pitch material represented by Carter’s 8-Note Chord 5 (D, Eb, F, F#, G#, A, B and C, or 0, 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10). Philosophically, the title of the work is in direct reference to Hangzhou (the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China) and its ponds at the West Lake island of Xiao Ying Zhou established in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) – with particular focus on the three small stony pagodas, called ‘Three Ponds (or Pools) Mirroring the Moon’ or Sân tán yìn yuè. Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon additionally serves as a dedication to Nalin Shen and the composers of Zhejiang Province, People’s Republic of China.
