New Zealand - Taranaki -The Three Sisters
For spectacular views of the three 25 metre towering rock formations on the beach known as the Three Sisters, turn down Pilot Road (on the seaward side of State Highway 3) north of the Tongaporutu bridge (15 minutes drive from Mokau, 90 minute drive from Waitomo turn-off). There is another formation next to the sisters known as 'Elephant Rock'—it does look amazingly like an elephant. Here you can get spectacular photos of the rock formations and the white cliffs of North Taranaki. Interestingly, there were four sisters at the turn of the century, but the sea has gradually eroded one away.
If you want to get up close and personal with the Three Sisters, turn off South Highway 3 down Clifton Road south of the Tongaporutu Bridge and park in the riverside reserve. At low tide you can walk alongside the river and round the point where you will find the Three Sisters and Elephant Rock. In nearby caves you can also view a rock drawing of a curious six-toed foot.
3 Sisters Tongaporutu |RV Living NZ | Winging It NZ | Episode 19
This place is breath-taking. There is something very magical here. We'll be back to spend a few days here so we can explore further.
Tongaporutu is a settlement in northern Taranaki, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 3 at the mouth of the Tongaporutu River, 15 kilometres south of Mokau.
Tongaporutu is well known in New Zealand for its 'Three Sisters' rock formations and its Maori petroglyphs carved into cave rock walls. However, both the Maori rock carvings and the 'Three Sisters formations are constantly being eroded by the Tasman sea.
The Three Sisters, New Zealand
It is located in North taranaki, New Zealand.
These rock formations are known as stacks. Many stacks were once arches that have collapsed, leaving just the upright columns. Over time these will also topple into the waves. This is already apparent in the Taranaki region's Three Sisters.

The Three Sisters in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 49: Today we are heading north of New Plymouth to The Three Sisters in Taranaki. This is an amazing part of Taranaki coastline with three stone stacks.
Yesterday - Day 48 -
Tomorrow – Day 50 –
About this video:
Today we are driving north of New Plymouth to see three amazing rock formations called the Three Sisters. They sit along the rugged Taranaki coastline just outside of a small town called Tongaporutu. This also used to be the site of Elephant Rock before it lost its trunk in an earthquake...
You can only reach the Three Sisters in Taranaki at low tide, but we arrive an hour into low tide, giving us limited time to spend with the Three Sisters. Nevertheless, the whole walk to the Three Sisters alongside sheer cliffs and awesome rock formations is a stunning one. There are also arches and boulders to see.
Along the way we find a merman and his princess, so they join us for the walk back from the Three Sisters.
So what do you think of the Three Sisters in Taranaki (and The Elephant Rock before it lost its trunk)? Are the Three Sisters somewhere you would add to your New Zealand travels?

Best New Zealand Photography - Tongaporutu's Three Sisters
Tongaporutu beach on the Taranaki coast would have to be one of my favourite beaches in NZ. The Rock formations , including the Three Sisters and what's left of the Elephant rock are stunning. On a clear day to can see Mt Taranaki in the distance.
You have to visit an hour either side of low tide to access the three sisters or you have to settle for images like the first few on my video, they day i arrived it was high tide so had to return at sunrise the next day

Elephant rock and Three sisters | Meeting at pasyal sa Taranaki, New Zealand
The original Elephant rock in Taranaki coast stood behind the three sisters before losing its trunk due to erosion in 2016.
The one i feature in this video is not the original Elephant rock but it has its similarity to an Elephant as well.

Exploring the Sea Caves of Three Sisters Beach in the Taranaki Region, New Zealand
The magical expanse of beach has it all. Long wide stretches of fine sand strewn with towering sea stacks, tidal pools, and an extensive network of sea caves, many of which are only accessible during medium to low tide. We almost missed seeing this beach, but it is well worth it!
