Thunder Hole, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. This spot also offers gorgeous panoramic views of Otter Cliff, on the right or south side, Schoodic Peninsula in the far distance, and Sand Beach and Great Head to the left or to the north. Thunder Hole is a great place to stand and watch or sit and relax, taking in the spectacular sights, sounds and smells. One of the pleasant things that greets you upon arrival, depending upon the time of year, is the aroma of wild roses. Right next to the stairs that lead down to the ocean, are large groupings of wild roses or rose hips. Rose hips are a potent source of vitamin C, at least until they become dry or are processed. Note: The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus stops here about every half hour during normal seasonal daytime hours. The last bus leaves at 6:58 P.M. Check their schedule to verify.

Throwback Thursday post: because I can. :) We went to Acadia National Park at the PERFECT TIME. Late Sept, early Oct, cool, brisk, everything in Bar Harbor starting to shut down. We saw some epic views and had great hikes, but something about Thunder Hole really stood out to me. We also went to Jordan Pond, which is a pretty (VERY) easy walk around the lake. Both are must visits when visiting Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine!

Thunder Hole Acadia National Park- Hurrican Bill 08/23/2009
We took this clip of Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park at about 11:30am on August 23, 2009, while standing at the top of the observation area. The stairs below had already been closed off and there was a row of spectators just below us on the trail when a large wave rolled in and reached them. Just after this wave a park ranger moved people out of that area. About a half hour later/noon, a rogue wave came in and swept a group of people off the rocks near Thunder Hole and 3 were pulled into the surf. Very sadly a 7 year old girl drowned.

With the currect tide and ocean conditions, Thunder Hole makes a thunderous noise. It was more calm when we visited. More like burps. In Acadia National Park, Maine. Recorded in August 2012 using a Flip Video camera.
