Thunderbolt's Hideout - Tenterfield, Australia
The fam went on a trip to Northern NSW (aka enemy territory) and we stayed in Tenterfield. Here we found out that Captain Thunderbolt (a bushranger) used to camp in this area and one of the attractions is this place. It was so nice and cool between the rocks, well worth a visit. Bushrangers were kind of naughty people a while ago who stole from the rich and sometimes gave to the poor. A kind of Robin Hood leaning towards the dark side.

Tenterfield WW2 Tank Traps & Captain Thunderbolts Hideout
Explore and experience history in Tenterfield NSW Australia. The World War 2 Tank Traps at Tenterfield were a part of the claimed Brisbane Line which was supposedly been a line of last defence in Australia for the invasion by the Japanese. Tank Traps were to slow down tanks and expose their soft underbelly for attack.
Captain Thunderbolts Hideout is a maze of natural rock formations that allowed for the famous bushranger to hide with his horses and keep lookout to escape capture by the authorities in the 1800's.
Its easy to see that the Aboriginal people would have used the space for 1000's of years too.
Tenterfield has so much history with both these places within 1km of each other and only about 10 minutes drive from the centre of Tenterfield.

Thunderbolts Hideout
Frederick Wordsworth Ward was an Australian bushranger renowned for escaping from Cockatoo Island, and also for his reputation as the gentleman bushranger and his lengthy survival, being the longest roaming bushranger in Australian history.
Captain Thunderbolt's hideout
Frederick Ward, better known as Captain Thunderbolt (1836-1870), was well known throughout the Tenterfield district. There are many caves and hideouts in the New England area, but few are as easy to visit as the one in Tenterfield.
Thunderbolt's Hideout is 12km from Tenterfield, and is an easy walk, about 300m from the main road. He used the large area between the rocks to stable his horses and the small shelter under the large rock as a place to camp. The top of the rock made an ideal lookout, as this was the main road to Warwick during the gold-mining days.

THUNDERBOLT HIDEOUT
Today we explored Thunderbolt Hideout ✌????
Despite rolling my ankle about 100m into the walk, with my makeshift walking stick and the boys laughing as they attempted to clear the track ahead of me to prevent any possible further incidents, we made it into ‘Captain Thunderbolt’s camp’, where in his bushranger days he’d stable his horses and camp under the huge rock shelter there while on lookout for gold-miners on their way to Warwick to rob ????????♂️????
This was the first of many of the elder boys choice of adventure after searching the local area’s history online last night ????

Captain Thunderbolt
Bushrangers were the most dangerous outlaws in the 1800’s in Australia, this is the story of one of those men. Captain Thunderbolt would be the longest surviving Bushranger, and one of only two men who would escape from the notorious Cockatoo island prison. He was one of the few bushrangers to be married and the only one that would have his wife accompany him while he was on the run from police. To some he was a folk hero, to others a dangerous criminal.
