Thurnham Castle
It is a 12th-century flint-built castle constructed by Robert de Thurnham in the reign of Henry II on a hill on the edge of the North Downs. One side of the bailey wall still stands 10 foot high and originally it enclosed an area of about a quarter of an acre. There is no visible stonework on the large motte.
The site has been acquired by Kent County Council and included in the White Horse Millennium Wood and Country Park Project. Much of the site has been cleared of undergrowth and public access has been provided.

Thurnham Castle Ruins in Maidstone Kent
Not a great deal is known about the history of Thurnham Castle.
An estimate has been made that it originally dates back to the late 11th century.
Thurnham Castle is situated to the north of Thurnham village with the castle entrance located at the top of Castle Hill.
Remains of the Curtain wall are still standing along with two square tower bases, one to the North west side and the other half way along the west curtain wall.
The position of Thurnham Castle gives it an elevated advantage on the edge of the North Downs, as it overlooks literally everything into the horizon.
Thurnham is one of three earthwork castles in the area, along with Detling & Stockbury Castle.
Thurnham Castle is an interesting place to see if you are visiting the area.

WILD CAMPING IN A RUINED CASTLE | THURNHAM KENT
I have been planning this wild camp for the last few months and already visited the site once before to assess it's potential for a wild camp with Candice. We returned to the remains of Thurnham Castle, high up on a steep hillside overlooking the village of Thurnham, near Maidstone in Kent, for this ambitious camp.
The weather was forecast as some 40mph winds and some rainy showers from Storm Hannah. We experienced some of these earlier in the day and had a few spells of light rain during the night, but it was mostly calm. We took our Vango Nevis 200 tent to ensure a comfortable and dry nights sleep.
After a trip to two local pubs, we returned to the castle hill and headed up past the remains of the stone curtain walls and up onto the top of the huge motte where a keep may once have stood and set the tent up.
We had hot drinks, a cider and lots of food including another ration pack before settling down for the night to sleep. We awoke at 6am the following morning to a cloudy sky with little sunshine, but the views were still spectacular. After breakfast and a speedy breaking of camp, we headed down to explore the rest of the castle site, little remains sadly, before heading home.
It has been a goal of mine for a long time to wild camp on the site of a ruined castle, and now I've finally done it! Next castle wild camp will be Hadleigh Castle near the Thames Estuary in Essex!

Thurnham Hall Restoration
Restoration of Thurnham Hall. In 1973 my father Stanley Crabtree bought Thurnham Hall, which had been burnt out by fire in 1959 and was a virtual ruin, from the last of the Dalton family. Together with myself (David Crabtree) and with the help of local carpenter (Peter Clare) we set about restoring the hall which took many years. This film, which was taken in 8mm film (please forgive the quality), records a small part of the restoration . Hope you enjoy it.

The beginning of this video pixelates, please bear with it or skip to 1:15
The initial file was created using a Key Fob Camera @ 720p which creates a .mov file, I used Windows Movie Maker which converted it for editing then converted it again for publishing/viewing. I wish Windows Movie Maker could process and output the Quick Time format I believe this would stop the pixelating.

Kent Country Walk - Detling-North Downs Way-Pilgrim's Way-Thurnham round
Our video is a guided walk in the county of Kent from a small village called Detling near Maidstone. We start opposite the Cock Horse Inn and follow the North Downs Way along the top of the Downs, visiting Thurnham Castle on the way. The views are stunning. We return to Detling along the Pilgrim's Way, a minor road, through Broad Street and Thurnham. A moderate walk along the North Downs Way with some steep inclines and declines returning on the much easier minor road along the Pilgrim's Way. Approx 8.25 miles allow 3½ hours using OS Explorer Map 184, Maidstone & the Medway Towns.
